Canadians? Only Ontarions? Thinking of quitting smoking??

As you may recall, the Cancer Society, various health units and some other socially concerned agencies have held campaigns in the past in this area where they encouraged folks to quit smoking for a month, and had a draw for a number of prizes, often including a car.

They're doing it again this year, signing people up now to quit during March, and one needs a buddy to ride herd over one to ensure that s/he really does it.

When I came out in a hurry this morning, headed for my blood test and the old guys' coffee hour at church ... I forgot the newspaper that told of the particulars.

This is just to give you a "heads up" and I or others can provide more particulars later.

I sure hope that a number of you who are smoking now choose to participate.

And for those of you in jurisdictions where such campaigns/contests aren't available ...

... wouldn't it be a good idea if some folks were to challenge your local agencies with a similar focus to set up a such a progam in your area?

In areas where healthcare is not primarily a public service, perhaps some of the privately managed agencies might offer support, as well: minimal support now - or heavy pay, later?

As I mentioned in another post, I am smoke free for 3 years and 5 days now! When I made the choice to become smoke free I made sure that my coworkers and close friends knew of my decision. They were much more tolerant of my stress levels and the mood swings that happened during the first few weeks.
Being able to moan and complain without anyone judging me, and having someone to talk to, made it so much easier. Without the support of those around me each day, it would have been much more difficult. So please, do yourself a favour and accept whatever help and support is offered to you. If you happen to snap at someone at work during a difficult moment, it will help immensely if they know what you are doing.
This will only last a short time and soon you will be FREE!

Congrats on your Quit, mush.

It does help if one publishes the news of one's quit, doesn't it?

That way, if one falls off of the wagon ...
... one has quite lot of egg on one's face (to mix a metaphor).

Thanks, Jim! Well the update is that the rose hips are still viable, but I just don't see how they'll have time to ripen. This summer, my roses only had one flush. Pretty pathetic. But I'm hanging in there!!!! One tree keeled over in a break and is only 3 feet tall now. I guess, we'll have to dig it out next year. Another tree was split nearly down the middle vertically. So we cut the tree below that spot. There are some side shoots, but I'm not sure if this tree will survive. I'm not very knowledgeable about trees. :) Another tree (black olive) will have some substantial side branches cut away - but the main trunk looks okay. But the roses look okay. I'll just miss the last flush of the year, since most of the roses have top growth gone. But there's always next year!!! Karen - Yes, I know, eastern Canada gets such terrible snow storms that just take out trees every year it seems. I'm always feeling sorry for the easterners. This is our first in the 8 years we've been here. So good luck with your weather too! :) Ingrid - yes I know. Gardening is getting more and more challenging. We don't get the heat problems - but the challenge is there for everyone lately. :( Thanks Susan!!! Yes, we shall persevere and overcome! It's the farmers that I worry for. They have such a difficult time. I have to put my gardening problems in perspective. Yes, it can get disheartening, but dang it!! we WILL continue!!! Okay, maybe I'm getting a little dramatic here. LOL Thanks Sara-Ann!! Everyone here is inspiring! I'm even thinking that my worms are inspiring. My composting worms survived in their bin for 4 nights of -7C (19.4 F) weather. Thanks Daniella. I was gonna try Chantix - until I spoke to my friend who had such a bad reaction to it. She said she had to go sleep it off. The others says it makes them sleepy, tired. They're slowly getting used to it. Baby aspirin is about where I'm at - except for excedrin for migranes (has caffine) - otherwise - unless it specifically says for daytime - it's gonna put me in the drool zone. (Eyes glased, drool from my lip.) And unfortunately, I've got one of those jobs where I have to stay/be sharp. Can't be thinking through cotton. I wasecited until she told me she started thinking about it and what it was doing to her brain, and what it was attaching itself to, and why she felt so awful. She almost took food out of her mouth in a restaurant because she didn't think she could swallow it. I'm thinking the patch and gum is gonna be my route again. I just need DH to agree to do it with me. Whole family smokes. I won't be able to do it in the face of everyone else smoking. And I can't ask him to do it right now - heavy stressers in our lives right now. Soon though, very soon.

I used the Chantix too! It was nothing next to a miracle. Chantix is a prescription drug (a pill) that your doctor can prescribe. A friend recommended it to me after she quit her habit of 30 + years. I started taking the Chantix pill and didn't even think about quitting smoking. I did smoke less without even thinking about it. On day 12 I was getting ready for bed and I realized, "hey, I didn't smoke at ALL today!" I can't tell you how great that felt. Each day after that I didn't smoke and it didn't seem like I was being deprived or white knuckeling it! I continued taking the pills for a few more weeks when I decided that I just wasn't going to smoke, pill or no pill anymore. It is now over 6 months for me. The prescription did cause me to have some really wacky dreams! It is a psychological drug, so I think if you are having depression or other mental issues it may not be for you. Someone commited suicide while on Chantix so they got a lot of bad publicity. But personally I feel that person PROBABLY had some underlying issues beforehand. I have recommeneded it to long time smokers without trying to be preachy (just because I'd like them to feel the power I feel by not being saddled by cigarettes!) Many of them said they would never put a prescription in their systerm to quit! Yet on a daily basis they are lighting up and putting known carcenogens into their body, so I figure they are just making an excuse. Ladyofdirt, if you are reading this and you still need a method to quit I would encourage you to try the Chantix. Best wishes to you!
