Do you have glass over your wood kitchen table?

My first kitchen table was solid wood, the scratches and dents drove me nuts, some of which were caused by DH not being careful when he writes. Our next table is ceramic tile top, after 15 years it looks new, but style and size aren't good for my new kitchen. I saw a table I love, unfortunately it has a veneer top, the design on table top is beautiful, I don't want to cover it up with pads and table cloth, so am thinking of putting glass over it. If you have glass on top you wood table do you like it? Do the scratches in the glass show a lot? Is your glass tempered? What thickness do you recommend, was thinking of 1/4 inch. It's yours polished or beveled? THANKS!!!!!!!!

I have glass on top of my mission table. Love it. It's not tempered, and it just has a plain edge. The annoying thing is the need to constantly clean it. And sometimes spills get under the glass which is hard to lift and then clean underneath. We've had it about 4 years or more, and only one small chip on the glass. I think it's about 1/8". I just went to the local glass shop, and they gave me what they said is standard. There are no scratches in the glass, and we are not an easy family on things.

I don't, but I should. Bought a lovely vintage table (you know, cheap), refinished the beat-up top, plopped it in the kitchen, and, well, you know where this is going. Now I have a lovely vinyl table cloth. :(

I think the edge depends on the table style somewhat--a beveled edge wouldn't be right on a mission table, but might look very nice on a fussy Duncan Phyfe style.

Glass will resist damage more than any wood--if you get a chip or scratch on glass, imagine what the wood would have looked like after that!

Andi- I love your plan! It's such a beautiful space and you have so many great details, too. We like the corner stove, since we can't recess it into the wall, so it would be right in the doorway. Also, you can see it from the kitchen, too, since we have a wall that would block one, on the side wall. I'm still trying to figure out what sized windows to use, by the stove. I like the divided windows, above the banquette (isn't that what you have?) but don't have room for french doors, so trying to decide what window to use, between the banquette and the corner stove. I really am looking forward to seeing your space, since it looks so wonderful on paper...and the little area by the stove will be perfect for reading the paper, on a Sunday morning! :)

My dining table has a tung oil finish, so I just wipe it down with a soapy sponge and dry it with a dish towel. If you use a store bought cleaning product, choose one without ammonia. Ammonia, even the fumes, can cause wood to darken, and you'll never get it back to the original color. Some woodworkers intentionally put wood in an enclosed space next to an open container of ammonia to make the wood darker without staining it. Here is a link that might be useful: fuming with ammonia

I have full overlay cabinets without a visible light rail, and small flush molding as a spacer for the ceiling. My sink window is a four foot wide, counter level garden window (i.e., pushed out for plants) with ceiling high cabinets up to the molding on either side. It would have looked kind of dumb with all this going on and nothing over it. Rather than a valance, I have a bridge cabinet. It is a foot high, flush to the same molding at ceiling height, and connects the two sides. There are a couple of knobs on the front, and a decorative heat register. Inside are a couple of lighting cans directed through the bottom at the sink, and space for spare lamps (or whatever one might want to hide). Valances aren't done as much now mostly because a lot of people are putting in standard (rather than custom) sized cabinets, and either not taking them to the ceiling or soffit, or filling the gap with furniture moldings. That makes it hard to design in a valance that is appropriate and integral to the cabinetry design. Cali Wendy's sink, in the linked thread, shows how you can make a valance look fresh in a classically styled kitchen. Notice the shape, like the white inset cabinets, references the past, but is also crisp and modern. Insetting it a few inches highlights and differentiates the window area more than flush would. What is very out, until the '50's/'60's suburban kitchen becomes the next trend, is the scalloped or challet style valance. I also wouldn't do a straight board unless it were for a really rustic look. Something designed for the kitchen that's in proper proportion and style can be beautifyl.

I do prefer hanging light over the dining table. There is something very cozy about it. But I see how semi flush or flush or sconces or even big overhanging floor lamp can be beautiful too, in some cases. I don't like flush mounts or so I thought; but when I suddenly saw one that I really loved-I changed my opinion in a blink of an eye, and didn't rest until I found place for it:) So it depends. What I don't like-a huge amount of recessed lights..they're okay in kitchens or hallways or where they are really needed, but I saw several rather pretty houses that had just these recessed lights all over the ceilings, a lot of them, everywhere. And the ceilings were perfectly high too, so I truly could see no reason for them..it just brings unwanted attention to these lights, and you can't look away somehow.

I've seen many wood tables with glass but it takes a bit of warmth out of the look (and feel). Still, I think it can work well depending on the look you're going for. : )

We have a large walnut island--- i'm hoping it will hold up well! (fingers crossed)

I don't have glass on my table, but I should, because the finish is very soft. I wouldn't do a beveled edge on protective glass, but a pencil edge makes a nice soft edge that doesn't take away from the amount of usable flat area.

I had plain ol' glass on my desktop when I was a kid and it held up very well all through elementary and high school. No major scratches and only one edge chip.

I just called to order my table/ glass top too, unfortunately he told me the table isn't a perfect round and I'll have an overhang with the glass.... to have it fit properly the glass will cost 100 less than the set.... I'm back to square one in looking for a new table.

Can't you take the table's measurements (or even a template) to a glass shop and have glass custom done there? That's what I need to do with mine since it's surfboard shaped.

I used to have a wood table and had a piece of glass cut to fit. It was care free and best of all, when I used my expensive table clothes underneath they stayed clean and stain free. Even with 3 kids! I replaced my table with a gorgeous inch thick glass on cast stone pedestal. It looks smudgy most of the time, but beautiful right after it's windexed which must be done several times a day. So I keep a table cloth,(which gets dirty easily since it's on top of the glass) on it and now you can't see how lovely it is.......... loved the glass on wood treatment!
