Expo Store

Hi,

We are in the beginning stages of remodeling, the kitchen being the first. We have already picked our cabinets locally. My questions is about the EXPO store. The closest one is 2 1/2 hours away; is it worth it to drive that far to see new and exciting things up close? Future remodels are bathrooms, laundry room and family room.

Cll2008: Yes, yes yes. It is well worth a 2.5 hour drive to see in person the options available to you. DH and I live 4 hours from the closest Expo (it's in another state!) and if we were considering appliances, countertops, fixtures, etc. that were only in the Expo showroom we most definitely would have driven there to see-touch-smell-hear everything.

Yes, the first one I went to was three hours away. I took a day off from work on the day the one near us opened! Also we had our master bath redone by them. It was pricey but came out very nice.

Atlgirl, I am very sorry to hear this. I can imagine you are sitting with a huge knot in your stomach and much worry about this situation. Though I've yet to sign or spend anything on my kitchen remodel, this news has me shaken. And I too am wondering where to turn for kitchen services in this turbulent economy. I spoke w/a rep at Expo a few weeks ago and got a sense of prices, what they carry etc. And even if they didn't get the full contract I was feeling good that I could at least get my appliances there using the 10% discount/year to pay with no interest etc. My assumption was that Expo, being a branch of Home Depot, would be immune from what worries me about going with an independent firm and/or a custom cabinetmaker: that they would go out of business and leave me without cabinets or the money I paid, as is happening with Danielle00. I interviewed a firm that did a kitchen for a family member, so I know they do good work. Although the guy was somewhat haughty (he made it clear he is a High End Designer and my job was smaller than his usual) I was still worried that his business might be shaky. Oh, and I live in Miami which has been severely hard hit by the economic downturn. So now I'm seriously wondering if I should scrap my planned remodel and just let things wait for a year or so. Although I have to get work like this done in the summer, it doesn't have to be THIS summer. Maybe continuing to save for another year till the economy is hopefully on the upswing is the wiser move.

"hanging in my kitchen for a few years now " Probbaly Chinese made stained glass. You might try seeing if there is a stained glass shop nearby to look over the others and check for any cracks in seams. It looks like copper foil work. Copper foil (AKA 'Tiffany style) sticks to the edges of the glass pieces, and then the foil is soldered together. It has strength limits, and all the small work in the middle of the large side makes a weak spot. It is not as strong as lead came stained glass. If there are not any wires soldered on the inside of the glass work they should be added. If they follow the existing seams they will not show (throw a shadow) but can strengthen the glass significantly.

I was just at the Novi, MI store last night. Everything is 10%-30% off. It seriously felt like they would be closed in another week or two. I wanted to check out the bathroom vanities, and was seriously disappointed to see that they would be closing. As others have said, I enjoyed window shopping and just wandering around in there. I am considering buying a vanity from them. It was something like $1299 marked down to $1039. Do you guys think it'll be marked down any further than that? I'm kind of leery of buying from a place where I know I have no real recourse if something goes wrong.

Yea, I hope you finally get your kitchen. A temp sink isn't a big deal - you can order a laundry sink from Ace hardware for $25 with free shipping with in store pick up (we got this one a few weeks ago and it is nice as I hated the old concrete one). And, we got a pull-out laundry faucet from Home Depot (really cheap but works and has the hose hook up). So, if you have all the plumbing in place, all the need is a new sink, faucet, and drain fittings and they can do it all under $70 or so (in less you have the sink and faucet and can make a mini wood stand for the sink). Our project cost us more as we reworked/redid a lot of the plumbing and copper and those fittings add up.

The Expo stores are fun and a great idea. However, they tend to be VERY overpriced. Go there for ideas, shop elsewhere. (For example, we got our kitchen sink for half what Expo wanted to charge us.

I agree. The closest one to me is 2 hours away, and I made two trips there during my renovation planning. They have a lot of installed kitchens on display, which really helped me see what I did and didn't want. And I got to see appliances that I hadn't encountered anywhere else. I felt very comfortable taking my time and exploring things in the store without any sales pressure. And nope, didn't buy anything from them.

Thanks everyone! It only took a couple of post with a yes and we were on our way. I am so happy we went. DH and I felt the same way as you all said; great place to look and get ideas but most likely we will find things cheaper elsewhere. The tile department was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to start my bathroom.

I was able to see an entire kitchen in the cabinets I had already chosen and that was so exciting. I loved them even more then I had thought. The one part that really overwhelmed us was all the choices for a backsplash. WOW, I have no idea how we will make that choice.
