I love the colors you've chosen in your DR. If you put your existing chairs side by side you could get two arm chairs for the shorter ends. Maybe chairs with upholstery to complement your wall paper? A plaid or stripe to pick up the colors in the room might look nice.

I love your DR and kitchen and what you've done with it -- and especially the toile wallpaper and burgundy swags.

I agree with furletcity about using the existing four as side chairs, and getting two host chairs for the ends. Would you consider a pair of parsons chairs (with or without skirts)? I like furlet's idea of stripe or plaid (muted, not too bold). Or some geometric pattern that is not the same scale as the wallpaper.

What about these as host chairs, in a different finish, and in the fabrics of either Cindy Cinnabar or Hope Canyon? The fruitwood finish should work, or perhaps the Red Cherry?

The other choice would be if you could get chairs that match the metal bar stools, and then recover all the seats of the chairs and stools in a similar fabric to those mentioned above.

Although I like the idea, I don't think I could match the metal chairs. Plus, in retrospect the metal chairs weren't the best choice. They will work better, however, if I recover them in the same coordinating fabric that I wind up with on the extra chairs (and seat cushions for the existing chairs).

So, as far as style goes, a Queen Ann Parsons chair works? Any other styles? How about an arm chair?

I remember the last time you posted about your chair problem, but don't remember how it ended.

If budget allows, rather than recovering the metal counter stools, I would replace them with simple French county stools with rush seats. That would provide a cohesive look to the area. You could then place your four chairs on the side of the table and pick out two nice upholstered chairs in a beautiful pattern like Les showed, or another pattern that you happen to love.

I found solid mahogany, rush counter stools on the Art & Artifact site, on sale, for $110. They are called Marmont. Strangest thing though, it's the only site I've ever been on that didn't allow me to right click so I can't provide a link.

karezz, I like the style les posted, that's sort of what I had in mind when I said parsons with no skirt, but better. I had a spare pair of smallish wingback chairs I got at a consignment store, and put them at the ends of my table in the last house. They looked fabulous but did take up a lot of room. They were also fairly impractical because actually too low for sitting at a DR table. But since nobody ever used the DR table, it was purely for looks. My point is, yes, you could use a pair of upholstered arm chairs there, so long as they go with your existing chairs.

It seems like whatever you put there has to have a very plain simple back because the backs of your side chairs have a lot of movement. Being sort of stuck in my own style (18th century QA and Chippendale) I have no idea what kind of exposed wood backs would go with them, other than something that was a decent match.

I have been doing some shopping and I am finding chairs that can't compare with the quality or substantial size as my current Nichols and Stone chairs. So I think I better stick with this company.

Any thoughts on these choices:
1) buy 2 arm chairs to match the 4 side chairs and add seat cushions to them and recover the metal stools at the island in the same fabric.
2) One of these two N&S arm chairs (legs are the same style)with the same rush seat and cushions. I can get these chairs in the same finish as the current chairs OR RED!

I would not get them in red. Would rather see you get the second one in the same finish as you presently have and have fun with the fabric on the cushions.

If you can still get the same chair, then that's a big yes, and cover the seats in something nice that goes well, which you obviously already have a good eye for doing. I don't think you should cover the stool seats in the same thing though. That will unite them with the DR chairs, which shouldn't be done because they are obviously the individualists in the area and thus need to be clothed accordingly. You said you wished you had different ones but for the moment I actually think they look pretty good and that their lines do not clash with those of the DR chairs.

On option #2 -- definitely not the first one. Maybe the second one but I don't really think so, the lines are too different, though they are very nice chairs.

I think the parsons chairs would look great at each end of your table. N&S is great & your table & chairs are gorgeous. You can't get 2 more chairs? Althou, I like to see a mix.

N&S was bought by Stickley and they are no longer manufacturing many of the chairs (mine being one of the discontinued styles). I have an email to them to see if they know where I can locate them. I am not hopeful. My second choice is parsons chairs.

If I cannot get the N&S chairs, which parsons chair would look best? Remember....this is a kitchen.

I like the one with the Queen Anne feet. There is also a chair at Carrington that has Chippendale frame to it which I think would look good with your room. I really think this is the direction to go and the Carrington chairs are great. I am happy that Georgiagirl recommended them as I have enjoyed the ones I got. I needed two additional DR chairs now that my family is growing and I have EA furniture from the era goneby when Ethan Allen was majoring in period furniture. So I needed something that would blend and not compete with and Carrington Court fit the bill for me.
