This week is not off to a good start!

Late Saturday afternoon, the kitchen sink clogged. I tried the vinegar/baking soda/hot water remedy four times with no success. Then Harry got a bottle of Liquid Plumber and that didn't do a thing. Since I had a dishwasher full of dirty dishes and quite a bit to do by hand, we ate Wendy's hamburgers last night. Called the plumber and he came around 1:30 and unclogged us--for $125. He wasn't here 20 minutes. Sigh!!

This morning a lens fell out of Harry's glasses. When he picked it up he noticed the other one was missing. I searched this place on hands and knees, afraid I'd step on the darned thing. After I quit looking, I spotted it on the floor right by the refrigerator (geez, that should've been the first place to look).

Nice warm water for the pool this morning.

THEN GS and I spent quality time. He had a gift card at Bass Pro or Pro Bass, and wanted to pick up fishing stuff.

So after we had a delightful lunch at The Ark, I let him take his time and shop until he got all he needed.

Dropped him off at his mother's and after a gentle kiss on the cheek and "I love you grandmother" I drove on home with a smile on my face.

You know, if you use that bacterial stuff (it's safe for putting down the garbage disposal) regularly, you'll never have another clog. So says my plumber, and so far, he's right. It's an expensive product to buy (think it's about $60? but I bought it a couple of years ago), but it lasts for quite a while, and it's still a lot cheaper than a plumbers visit

And that's why records are important :-) I planted them 5 weeks ago, working with the 6-8 week timeframe (thinking 8 was better than 6). But, they are outperforming my expectations, so probably did do a week or so early. I might be able to get them in the ground sooner. April 1st is our last frost date, so they can go in the ground very shortly if I get them hardened off. The problem is that spring is the busiest time at my work, so I always take a vacation to get everything in the ground. I really do make it more complicated than it might need to be - it won't take that long to get them in the ground - maybe I can do one night after work and get them in sooner than I was planning. Awesome pics!!! are they eggs of eastern blue birds? Eastern bluebirds are our regular guests since 2008, they are seems to busy in building nests. I have five bird houses in the backyard garden for them. This time house sparrow have taken two of their homes before bluebirds arrived. Indeed they have been fighting for the home since then. We have another unwanted but regular visitor to our front porch are the barn swallows. They build their buddy nest just above the main door entrance. I tried them to build on windows or other places around the house, but every year they are not listening to me. This year I destroyed their unfinished nest tree times, but but no luck. They build it again so fast and laid eggs before I noticed. So I have wait for them to make their babies and leave. Same thing happened last year. I need to find better way to make them to move to other place next year. Hummers are back, but visiting feeder not frequently. I hardly I see couple times last weekend. I guess they might have plenty of natural food around. I am sure they will swarm out feeder in late summer through fall. -Chandra

I believe they will have at least one more nesting at least thats how its been in the past, went out to the box this evening and snappped a photo because its hard to see how many hatched and in my pic only 4 of the 5 have hatched...I'll wait a couple of days and if the egg is still there I need to try to get it out but this momma builds her nests deep and its hard to even see the babies let alone try to reach in and remove an egg if anyone has some advice let me know. Also so glad to here that Donna and Lori are having a good yr. with blues I've been reading some horrible out come that others are not having good luck with there nestings.

Harry, thanks for following up with updates. That's valuable. I don't recall if you cover your pile or not. I learned to keep my compost piles covered and had good results. My most recent experiment was with using a mixture of freshly fallen oak leaves and last year's oak leaves, run through a hammermill chipper/shredder (Merry Mac 12p). I piled them into a windrow on a sheet of visqueen, a volume of about 3 cubic yards. I kept the pile loosely covered with more visqueen. The oak leaves heated up and composted steadily through the late fall and early winter months. I turned the pile at least once. When the pile was partially composted, I loaded them into a compost bin made of pallets 4' x 4' and covered that with old leaf bags. Red wigglers from some previous experiment were nearby and they moved into the periphery of the pile where temperatures weren't too hot. (This was my first experience seeing them at work.) By the spring, the pile was mostly decomposed - a beautiful looking (to a gardener), brown, loose, crumbly compost. I'm certain it wasn't 'finished' but it would have been a perfect mulch to apply over some finished compost. For me the lessons were; keep the pile loosely covered; oak leaves compost very nicely, thank you; my chipper/shredder is the bomb; red wigglers are strange but amazing.

What a nice day for you, Glenda. BTW, I have kitchen plunger written on my "get when we're out" list.

Azzelea, I have some of that bacteria stuff if I could remember to use it. Betcha' I will now.

What bacterial stuff are you all talking about? Not the stuff for septic tanks is it?

Sorry your week hasn't started off good Patti, now that the bad stuff is gone it should be good from here on.
My week is going as normal, I did manage to do some spring cleaning today, that's a good thing.I just hope I can stay motivated. BTW... I bought some of that Arizona sweet tea like you had, I love it!

Sometimes a "snake" helps.

Not expensive ... encourage someone with a large house (or garage) to get one, then notify the neighbours and when someone needs it, they can borrow ...

... for a small fee, until it's paid for, then free (apart from a bit of rental on the storage space?)?

I had a similar problem with my kitchen sink a while ago. Started with a grease clog, I tried a plunger, baking soda and vinegar, and a chemical declogger. Nothing worked. I called my plumber. I think a house call is $100 minimum. He said the baking soda was jammed in the pipe. He had to cut a hole in the floor to get to it. Looks terrible, and I think the bill was around $200. Several months later the S-trap pipe underneath started to leak and that was another $300 or so. My guy is so expensive, but so good, and he always comes within hours of my phone call.
