I have never made a challah before. It looks very complicated but I do want to try one soon.

Yeah I'm making dinner, keeping it simple. Two round challahs, brisket, honey mustard chicken, honey-orange glazed carrots, mashed taters, persimmon cake, store-bought birthday cake to sing 'Happy Birthday' to the World. Its 5771 years old according to the Jewish calendar, LOL.

Happy New Year to all my friends here. yesterday was my mother's birthday too, she's not quite as old as the world is.....yet. (grin)

Yeah, David's right! Where was the "whatcha makin for the holiday" thread this year? The holiday came early and I guess it snuck up on all of us.

It was just me & good ol' DH for dinner this year - neither of the kids could come home, too early (too close to the beginning of classes) and too middle of the week. So I just made some baked chicken and rice and a salad. Nothing big or special because when it's just us two, who's gonna eat all that?

Planning a similar simple menu for Yom Kippur. Probably a small roast, mashed potatoes & salad. For the break, bagels & lox, egg salad and (in my house anyway) de rigeur BROWNIES. Gotta have brownies to break with.

Shana tova! Wishing a happy, healthy, sweet new year to everyone!

AM, I'm impressed with the dinner you could whip up after a full day of work. I had the whole afternoon and pushed myself to the limit to make a roast chicken, along with stuffing and gravy, and a casserole of roasted carrots, parsnips, and leeks served with a sauce of honey, balsamic vinegar, and butter. Sides were rice and peas.

I was going to make a kugel, too, but never got around to it, so I'll try again for the break-fast after Yom Kippur. My favorite is a noodle kugel with apples and raisins, but DC (my cousin) is diabetic and won't eat those fruits. I offered to make half with sugar-free apricot jam, but he says he doesn't like main dishes to be sweet (never mind that he never complains when I make sweet and sour chicken!). So I'm looking for a good *savory* kugel, preferably one made with cottage cheese. Anyone have a recipe?

Sue, google around for 'Jerusalem Kugel'. its a vermicelli, savory kugel that does use some sugar. My father has been asking me to make one for him but I keep forgetting :-(

Thanks and a Happy New Year to all too! Count me in the bunch that didn't do anything special for dinner. Actually we have so much going on in our lives and a big remodel too, cooking wasn't going to happen. Weds eve I had chicken broth and last night we "celebrated" at Tony Roma's. Sigh...

Thanks to you all for the kind holiday wishes. I love learning and sharing holiday traditions and am glad to see others do as well.

Jessy, I love the birthday cake! And I've had that Jerusalem kugel, it's great. I wish someone in my family besides me would eat a noodle kugel - they are strictly potato people.

Ellen, I can't wait to see the remodel photos - I'm jealous, this place needs a major face lift, but it's going to have to wait a few years.

Glenda, challah is easy. I use my bread machine for the dough then braid it. And a round one is even easier, no braiding. I add extra honey for the round (no raisins for us) and twist it into a round cake pan. Sometimes I'll form small balls and but them side by side in the round pan for a pull apart round challah. Those are great for dinner since they come off like rolls, but they don't slice well for toast the next day.

Lowspark, I'm sorry your kids weren't around, but it sounds like you had a lovely dinner. I had to miss an all day food science lab for Rosh Hashanah this year, so I totally understand your kids not being able to leave school. I really didn't want to miss, but my prof was very understanding. I'll probably still have to make up the lab, which stinks, but nothing I can do about that...

Thanks for the suggestion, Jessy, but the recipes for Jerusalem kugel all seem to have a lot of sugar. I've been trying to avoid using more than a teaspoonful of sugar or honey in anything I cook---and I've given up baking entirely (: I've been googling and found some savory kugels with cottage cheese and various veggies. I think I'll experiment with a combination of mushrooms, shredded carrots, and cauliflower or broccoli. Maybe not so authentic, but ...
