Trouble Tossing Dresses

Today I remembered I have a garment bag stuffed in a closet with white formal dresses from a couple years ago when I was a page at a state conference. That's about the only time in my life I'll ever wear white (I'm too pale) and (since I never plan to page again) the clothes need to go!

Why can't I toss them in the Salvation Army bag? Is it because I shopped for months looking for white dresses that didn't look bridal?? I actually like the dresses, just not in white.

Honestly, it's giving me a headache just thinking about it.

Can they be dyed another color? And if the answer is yes, will you then wear the "new" dresses?

I bet that reluctance is twofold--the time you invested in finding them, and the money you spent on them.

Does that state conference still occur, and are there still people serving as pages who might need white formal dresses?

If so, is there any organization you can get to help you get word out to those ladies that you could pass along some dresses in size Y? E-mail makes that really easy.

If you can get ahold of whoever selects the pages or communicates with them, and explain the situation (emphasizing that it's hard to find non-bridal ones), I bet that person would think it was neat to help you move them along. Either sell them to defray your costs, or donate them.

Hey, maybe you'll start a trend w/ those page dresses!

In refrigeration school they taught us that if the doors are kept shut it is safe for up to 24hours, but every time you open the door the time is cut in half. Exmple,,,kept shut 24hrs. open door once,,12hrs open door a second time 6hrs open it a third time 3hrs Keep in mind, that is just opening the door to peek in,,,keep the door open 5 minutes and you can plan on tossing everything

Being a frugal person I like to recycle. I would use the paper cutter to cut the paper into 4ths. You can stick them in a decorative box by the phone etc. Also I have made "bound" note pads by putting a stack of the paper pieces between 2 rulers, then use rubber bands or clamps to hold them tight between the rulers. Take white glue and put a somewhat thick layer on the end of the papers to make a tablet out of them. Let the glue dry and put another layer or two on the ends again. It might take some time, but then you have a great notepad to use. I have even used these pads for gifts when I have had nice paper to use. If you do crafts, you might make paper beads out of them. Use them to dab brushes when you are painting etc. Ok... so I have too much time on my hands!

Don't bother about what MIGHT be valuable. My family is in antique/second hand business. When they don't know the value of an object they could sell they have a decision to make: keep it and research it quickly or sell it for more than they paid for it. Think about it. How many things are you going to store because they MIGHT be valuable? If you don't know it, how have you been harmed? If you really need the money then research it right away and sell it! I hope this helps. Meanwhile, I have a cute little cupboard that I have kept for 40 years!!! planning to "do something original" with it. It is now in the donations section of the garage. How time flies!!!!!!!

My folks just celebrated their 50th anniversary. Mom had her wedding dress and the little satin Juliette cap she'd made; AND my aunt still had her bridesmaid dress. Mom hung them both up at the reception. It made me think about whether I should keep my own dress, and headband, etc. I think I will. Thank goodness it's not that large--just a tea-length party dress, really, only in white silk dupione. Mom also has my grandmother's wedding dress; it was sort of nice to see it 15 years ago, when I was planning my own wedding. I used the sash from it to tie my bouquet (and now I can't remember where it went!! I'm hoping it's in the closet with the wedding dress itself). I have some extra fabric from my wedding dress (we made it, and I bought plenty in case I changed my mind and wanted it floor length), and I think I'll keep that. I used some of it to make a baptism gown, and I might want to make another so each of my kids can have one to hand down.

One dress is beaded, so dying probably isn't an option. The other two are dry-clean only, which probably means a professional dye job. Quite frankly, I don't need 2 more long formal dresses, so I'm not sure it's worth investing more money in them.

Your idea could be the perfect solution! I've got a meeting on Saturday and will find out who is Page Chairman this year. I have no problem giving the dresses away money-wise.. it's just that I shopped SO LONG to find them! LOL

I think you answered your own question. You don't need white dresses and these are obvously not worth investing more money in them. I agree that Talley Sue's idea is a great solution and perhaps you will be starting a trend.

Nope. Sorry. Changed my mind. I decided I didn't want to deal with dragging out the find-a-home process any longer, and I'm taking the dresses to the Salvation Army tonight.

LOL Once I decided to fling the dresses, I didn't want them hanging around here a minute longer!!!
