Texturing plaster walls that have been wallpapered & painted over
Comments (16)I'm not sure if the OP is reading this anymore, but I did want to offer advice. I've been scraping (and scraping and scraping, you get the idea) wallpaper for so long. We're in the process of redoing my daughter's room and there were many many layers of wallpaper on the walls. I assumed the layers started in the 1930's, but on one wall, they put sheetrock over the plasterwall. It's some bizarre cardboard-like substance, so I guess in the 1950's- late 60's they just redecorated a lot. Anyway, long story shortened, when I got to the last layer on that cardbaord wall, it's stuck like glue over it. I got off all I could, scrubbed it, and my husband put a layer of plaster over the whole thing and it's now smooth as glass. I don't think this would work with many many layers, but my father in law has done this in the past, and after 20 years all is still good. I wouldn't recommend doing this in the more public areas of the home, but in the bedrooms it might work for you. It sounds like from your post that you are a thoughtful remodeler. I, like so many on this forum, cringe when thinking of "flippers" and the lack of care for history that many have. However, there are people who remodel who do a great job and do it not only to make money, but to improve their community. Those people are to be commended, because their vision helps create a longer history for that house in that community. I hope that you are able to bring that home to its former glory and find a family to love it....See MoreWallpaper removal from old plaster
Comments (9)Hi--I would imagine it would be easier to remove wallpaper from plaster walls than sheetrock. Some people swear by wallpaper steamers, and if that sounds easiest to you then check it out. I've never used one before, so I can't say. My own experience removing up to 14 layers of old wallpaper from the plaster walls of our early 1890's home involved scraping off the outer layer(s) of stiff, painted-over paper with a razor scraper, and then using a warm solution of DIF wallpaper remover rolled on with a paint roller on the remaining layers, scraping it all off with a putty knife and razor scraper. It takes time, but it really depends on the papers/adhesives used and the condition of the underlying plaster. The remaining glue and remover residue is then washed off with TSP. Expect some cracks and other decay in the plaster, and understand that old plaster can look really-really bad and still be salvageable, depending on how much effort you want to put into it. Our repaired plaster walls have some imperfections, and I came to realize that it was unrealistic to expect that they'd ever have the perfectly smooth appearance of sheetrock walls, but I love them all the same. Good luck and don't get discouraged--old plaster walls that have been saved are a wonderful surface and you won't regret bringing them back....See Morewallpapering on old plaster
Comments (23)Christophern, I don't doubt it. But as often happens, the "right" answer varies a bit with context and preference. We really don't want to do anything that covers the plaster for good. It is so cool looking that if anyone ever strips the paper again, the original plaster should be visible. I don't know why, but that's important to me. Kind of like other people feel about original windows. The other thing that swayed me was that we just stripped paper off this wall, and I assume there was either wallsize used 60 years ago, or nothing, and the paper came off well enough. The plaster is very hard and was unscathed by the removal. The new paper is not quite as "papery" for lack of a better term, but the backing is paper and I have removed several modern papers quite successfully - pull off the top layer and then with water spray and time to soak, it is always possible. I've read the nightmares, but I've never really had one. Tedious work, yes, but always do-able. What I have taken away from this thread is that if priming is desirable over plaster, it is likely essential over drywall, and there, I must admit, I am not sure there are not some nightmares lurking somewhere in the house under wallpaper we applied 20 years ago. I hope we primed everywhere, but if we find we didn't, I will be thinking of you :-) Also, I am sure the thread will be of use to others facing different plasters to paper over. Comments (5)Three to four times the worst estimate you can think of as part-time DIY, even with MIL to watch the baby and wife working 10 hour days. 1 - You'll never know what is under the painted wallpaper until you remove it. I found gaping holes that had been covered over with old shoe boxes, then papered-over, then painted later. So I had to strip wallpaper, then patch plaster, and only then could I paint. 2 - Plaster repairs when wallpaper reveals cracks. You do NOT want plaster chips with lead paint falling where you have infants and toddlers, so the plaster has to be patched and primed. 3 - LEAD PAINT FUMES ... do NOT heat strip old painted trim unless you have full protective gear and excellent ventilation. Use the paste or gel strippers and scrape. (If your wife is breastfeeding, she should NOT be messing with lead-based paint!) 4 - Weird paint problems. Assume one coat of alcohol-based white shellac primer to seal in something. We found iron oxide paint (old-style barn paint) and calcimine (basically tinted whitewash). The first had to be sealed in because it bled through everything, the other had to be scrubbed off inch by inch so the next coat didn't peel off....See Moreakamainegrower
