That's the way they weaned my sister off the ventilator too. They don't want to do it to soon, and have to put it back in.

Lakota is starting to wake up! Kasey just called she is soo excited....he is starting to open his eyes and wiggle a little bit...then tomorrow they will start on the venilator!! He is at a 22? If anyoone knows what that means and will decrease it by 2's every 6 hrs.....Stacy

I missed what was wrong with him..no internet for 4 days! I'm glad he's improving Stacy.....hope he can recover completely from his problems. How old is he?

Thanks guys....Vikki he is 5 weeks old he has rsv and phenumia in both lungs.....but so far it sounds like he is responding to the meds great! Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts....Stacy

22 is probably the number of breaths he is getting per minute. Or it could be the amount of Oxygen he is on which would be very little since 21 is what we are breathing and you can go up to 100% oxygen so my guess it is the breaths per minute on the ventilator. What we would do with the babies is gradually wean the rate down on the ventilator until they were just on CPAP (Constant Positive Airway Pressure). This is just blowing air constantly into the lungs to make them easier to expand. Imagine a balloon, it is easier to inflate if there is already a bit of air inside instead of having to reinflate the whole thing. They will likely keep him on CPAP for at least a few hours/day before taking out his breathing tube. That is unless he pulls it out himself in which case they likely would give him a trial without it to see if he really needs it.

Haven't been on here much but I did see the pix of your grandkids. They sure are beautiful children! Are you worn out yet?? Hope all goes well with the little guy but, since I'm assuming you don't see them often, I'm glad you get to spend time with those cuties! Keep us posted, okay?

That is scary stuff....the little boy I take care of had it when he was about 8 weeks old. He's three now and has no problems. I've been watching him since he was 6 weeks old and remember how sick he was.

Yes RSV is not a nice virus for babies to get. They usually are very sick with it and often get put on ventilators. It sounds like Lakota is doing well though and will recover fairly quickly from here on. His parents and his Grandma probably will take a bit longer to recover from all of the emotional trauma.
