I think our gasoline prices must be the highest in the nation.....yesterday at Von's gas was $4.24/gallon and across the street at Chevron it was $4.39 as was the Chevron across the freeway.

Gone are the days of driving up the coast for lunch as seeing the elephant seals.

How much is gas in your area?

Has it curtailed your driving habits?

It was 3.39 yesterday when we bought gas, and today it was 3.45 at Costco. That's just outside the city limits of Tucson, AZ.

Here in Southern Oregon ;(often referred to as exiled Californians)gas prices are creeping up as well. Diesel is $4.39...so travel via our Motor home will be somewhat curtailed this year. Reg. was $3.89 yesterday and it looked like many folks were trying to fill up before the next jump.

We know we've been "spoiled" by low gas prices as compared to Europe. We need to get our public transportation back to being a priority. In Germany I visited: Dortmund (Buffalo, NY's sister city)I lived with a family for a month when I was 18, we visited all over the area close to Dortmund, Berlin in 1977, Hamburg - been there 3 times, Munich (took the train from Munich to Hamburg), Frankfurt ... I think that's it. It's been many years, I need to visit again. It's one of my favorite countries. I'll need to look at a map to see where you are.

We also have a dual fuel HP in ATL (13 SEER + 80% NG furnace). If you're going to invest that kind of $$ in a new system, plus pay to operate it for the foreseeable future, I'd do everything I can to ensure I got a quality install. Below is a link to a Southface Energy Institute fact sheet on blower door and duct blaster tests. They're an ATL non-profit. I highly recommend the info they have on their site. They might even be able to help or point you in the direction of a contractor to design your system and/or test your house/ducts. Ideally, you'd have the blower door done to feed into the Manual J sizing of the system. Then, after your new ducts were installed and sealed (but before insulating), you'd have the latter done to test how tight the duct system is. A brand new system, installed right, ought to leak at about 0.05cfm/sq ft of living space. That's only 125 cfm for your house. If at all possible, you want to maximize the amount of rigid ductwork, only allowing flex duct at the runouts (I'd get at least the Vision Pro w/ an outdoor sensor to control the switch to Aux heat. My understanding is that the IAQ version will handle the staging possibilities better than the 8000 series VP. It also costs more. I'd also be interested in getting a HP w/ good low temperature performance. Our gas bills have gotten smaller since getting the VP set up to control the switch. But on an old house, you're still going to use gas for the days in the teens/twenties like we've seen this winter. Anyway, food for thought. We have used ACS to do work on our system. I've been to Viet Nam twice but we've done it self-tour both times. We're not really organised tour people. It is remarkably easy to self-tour in Viet Nam, easier than you would think. April is a nice time to visit. For ideas you could check out the Vietnam forum on TripAdvisor. Some people have recommended reputable tour companies they have used. One thing I would say is that if you do use a tour company you should use one based in Viet Nam, as overseas companies tend to add on a huge markup. You will need a visa to enter Viet Nam and you can either pay a lot and get one beforehand by sending your passport, passport photos and the application form (available online) to the Vietnamese Embassy in the US along with the payment (fairly expensive) or you can get it for less than half the cost by getting an approval letter from a Vietnamese travel agent, then taking the letter, appropriate paperwork, passport photo and USD 25 to the Visa on Arrival desk when you get to Viet Nam. If you arrive in HCMC the wait to be processed can be up to an hour, in Ha Noi it's not generally much of a wait. If you take USD to exchange for VND, take clean, crisp, undamaged and undefaced bills- they won't accept even a tiny tear in a bill. Don't use USD to pay for things- some will tell you you can, and some places will accept them but at an exchange rate favourable to them :-) You can also get VND out of an ATM if your bank doesn't have a huge foreign use/exchange fee (some do, some don't). Three star hotels are very nice, about the equivalent of a nicely furnished, clean ordinary hotel, and they cost about $30-50 a night. Often they include a simple breakfast. Just make sure there's an elevator, if that's an issue for you.Five star hotels have a lot of things you may never use (business facilities, gym, etc) and cost about ten times that (I kid you not). We've loved the three star hotels. What sort of things do you want to do and see? How long do you have to visit?

Pllog makes a good point. Thank goodness for small mercies - no peeling, no flaking. Funny about that with the previous ovens. Rather surprised about that too as I hadn't heard anything about it. Must say, am a bit mystified by a convection oven whose fan cycles off. Why??? Not to save energy surely since the most energy-light part of the oven would be the fan! I downloaded the manual and saw that bit on page 17 that Rocs pointed out to you. A convection oven that may or may not convect. That's not averaging, I wouldn't say. Anyhow, Monogram has received good reviews and I will say that the forward/backward flow is a not half-bad idea to get good coverage. Not to sound totally condescending, but I just wanted to reiterate a few things that you probably already figured out cooking oh in the course of your life and re: convection anywhere (these are the things that I needed to learn): - pre-heat time. Never mind the beep; let it pre-heat 30-40 mins. - Selecting the correct racks and rack pairs when multi-rack baking. All specify to watch for this esp. with multi-rack cooking. - Air-flow: Take them at their word when they talk whatever their oven needs for clearances and to ensure laminar flow in their ovens. Yours says 1-1.5" clearances on either side from the walls, center the dishes on a rack, stagger them when one on top of the other (mine is v. tolerant about the last in convection mode but the clearances for airflow are definitely imp. I've found) - cooking to dish type: darks, vs. shiny vs. glass. Spills vapourizing to smoke is also surprising. Sounds like the bottom element was on and scorched the spill. I think using your drip try from here on out to help catch spills sounds like the best bet. I don't really know what to say though as it sounds a bit odd. Wouldn't have thought the bottom element could get that hot that it would char spilt pastry. No way that Monogram will come out to check the element to see if it is out of place somewhat? (Its a stretch but that's such an odd happenstance, I'd be dying to see what's under the panels ;-) ). Rhome, you'll figure out the ovens' idiosyncracies no doubt.

I paid $4.29 this morning for regular. I usually don't pay attention to gas prices but I looked today since it's been on the news. I will continue to drive as I always have.

$3.54 here - 3.55 if you count the 9/10 they always tack on. Like chi83, I don't pay much attention and won't go out of my way even a little to save a few cents. The only concession I might make is trying to run errands in one trip and in as direct a route as possible.

I do feel sorry for people on the edge where every jump in gas or groceries is a real hardship.

No, not really. I've always known and thought about how any trip anywhere was going to cost whatever it took for gas, thus made 'trips' count, usually with numerous stops whenever I am off the farm and 'out and about'.

Well, I mean, I have to go to work, I have to go to the grocery store. There's no use stressing out about the added expense because I can't change it. I have a small car and only commute a few miles to work so I only have to fill up maybe once a month. I do feel for people with long commutes or who have to drive around a lot.

What I definitely don't do is shop around for gas prices. I guess I don't understand driving around town and fighting the crowds to save a few pennies, and I think you don't net much savings after the added miles or even idling waiting for a spot to open. I would understand a substantial difference, like $2 a gallon, but I've never seen a difference more than a few cents. My time is valuable to me so I just pick based on convenience even if it costs a dollar or two more to fill up.

Sunday when we were coming home from our son's house in Eastern Iowa it was 3.49. Probably has went up now.

I don't even know what it is here but we are going today to fill up (top off) the Motor home....That will easily be $150.000........but what are you going to do....
