HaHa..I'm not joking...we have moved back to TX from MA and are in the process of building a new home..bogged down in all that is required in getting it started. We have an RV to live in but also we have a big 1200 sq foot garage that we had a lounge room built into and I have set up a kitchen area in it also...much easier than cooking in the

RV....It is fall and a really good time to start using that crockpot so I came to the forum to renew or refresh my memory on some of the crockpot recipes posted....

Going to be using mostly an elec griddle, an elec skillet, 2 crock pots etc so it is going to be fun dealing with cooking..so far so good but at this point it's still fun and games...we'll see how I feel about it in a month or two...so you guys tell me your favorite crockpot, stew, soup etc that I can make easily in my makeshift kitchen...

Hi Ruthie......try this
Brown steak or pork chops until desired doneness in frying pan.
Place in crock pot and add 28oz can crushed tomatoes
Carrots,peeled and sliced into chunks
and seasonings(salt,pepper,garlic)
Let cook for a few hours and then add potatoes...let cook until potatoes are done
Serve with crusty rolls or homemade bread...really good and easy

Thanks for your responses....I took a few slices of potato bread that I broke up into little pieces out today and they loved it. Mommy is still scared to death of me. I noticed that one of the chicks is already growing a comb (terminology correct? that red thingy on her/his head). Is this any indication of which sex it is? How early will I be able to tell which are hens or roosters? I did take a look on feathersite at the americana's and red sex link and I have no idea what she might be....she looks like both. I think that Velvet might be right and I have a rare hardly ever seen in captivity blurred chicken family. (I also have the rare blurred horse, cats, goats and dog on premises.) Maybe she is a mix of all or something else (heinz 57) as Brian suggested. The chicks are growing so quick I will try to get a few clearer pics of them (and mommy) to post.

Thanks, classytchr. Did you plant tulips? Don't know if southern Jersey has many rabbits as we do here in central/coastal part of state. People who have cats say they don't have much of a rabbit problem but not going to get a cat just for that. I could put some catmint into the butterfly garden to do double duty hoping to attract one big cat who wanders the neighborhood even though I go after him with a broom when he shows up while my groundfeeding avian friends are eating. Saw him grab a mole or baby possum once and shooed him away as birds were eating nearby. He took the prey but my birds were warned off. I'm wondering how I'm going to protect all the bulbs I've planted while they're still tender. Know everything I read says rabbits and deer don't eat much aside from tulips but I'll believe that when and if I see it next spring...LOL. There are plenty of daffodils and other narcissus, alliums, crocus, muscari, hyacinths and others I can't remember. It was a veritable bulb binge. I went so far as to put some in bulb cages and layered others in stretched steel wool to keep squirrels, moles, voles, chipmunks and anything else that web sites said could go after bulbs once they were in the ground. If there was a warning option out there I used it. Sufferin' succotash...now to get past those "pesky wabbits"! Most of the bulbs have to go in containers since there isn't much ground not invaded by tree/shrub roots and/or miles of underground vines that remind me of some old horror movie. I've hacked away with an ax and hatchet as much as I can to plant two small beds with bulbs but the rest are going into containers. I've got bubble wrap and "plankets" to cover yet not smother them to try and keep bulbs from heaving in containers as we go through winter/spring. After first really hard freeze I'll put piles of leaves between containers and "plankets" for added insulation until worst of season is over and then uncover them once last freeze passes. Heck, there's over 150 bulbs so something should bloom! Good luck to you too. We'll compare blooming notes come spring!

They can do awesome damage they can make your building collapse whether be shed or whatever. Our neighbors corner of the huge work shed collapsed the dens they make can be several feet deep and besides that the smell is atrocious!! you need to get rid of them as soon as they poke their heads out in the spring..DNR will provide you with a humane trap and you can release them elsewhere if you can't bring yourself to kill them. we have 5 acres and yes they are everywhere on our farther part of the acres and although I believe in live and let live when they come into your back yard to live its time to take action.

I had a resident skunk in the old house. There was a burrow under my shed but when I followed the skunk a few times, it usually went into the neighbors' yards and disappeared. We ended up with a fairly amicable relationship. Since they are nocturnal, I just made sure that I made plenty of noise when taking out the trash after twilight. There was some smell on hot evenings when he was wandering around the yard but I never felt that I had to do something about getting rid of him. Her. Whatever. However, the neighbors used their patio in the evening and were sometimes bothered about the smell (or perhaps feared that a crazed skunk would coming running at them to hose them down a bit). In general, if you leave them alone, they'll mind their own business and will help rid your yard of slugs, crickets (to me, a bigger nighttime annoyance) and other bugs. You can try pouring Lysol or something into the entrance, keeping in mind that this will contaminate the soil. Blocking the entrance may work but be sure that he's not in there when you do that and don't do it when there are babies! Pouring water in there will make his nest uncomfortable but, again, make sure he's not home at the time :) If you must relocated it, it's probably best to call a professional pest control company.

Hi Ruthie -

How's your new home building going?

Wanted to let you know that in my experience with having a temporary kitchen, I found the little burners at Walgreen's invaluable (in addition to crockpots and electric skillet). I think they were $15.00. Great for boiling water and popping popcorn. I had tried the more expensive burners(twice) that are available online from Amazon but they kept flaking out on us. The burner from Walgreen's never did.

Oh, I did have a very nice little Cuisinart combination toaster/convection oven which is great even if you have a full up stove.

Bet your temporary kitchen is working fine. I found that not having a stove was not a serious problem. The main problem I had was not enough counter space.

Brunswick Stew is easy in a crock pot - good nutrition in 1 dish.

I stir fry the meat(s) well before dumping into the crock.

Dried beans can be prepared in a crock pot, but be sure to soak overnight first. They provide good protein and fiber.
They will take about a whole day to cook in a crock pot, but shouldn't need much attending / stirring. Terrible waste of energy compared to using a pressure cooker, but beats going hungry.

RuthieG__TX, since it's been so long, how about an update? How did you fare in your compact kitchen? I use small appliances all the time but I'm single or cook for 2-3 at most. Seldom need a conventional stove/oven and the like. What were your favaorite meals?
