Gussy Up Your Garden Shed
Outfit your garden shed with salvaged finds for a double dose of storage and style
I don't know about you, but I can't help but collect beautiful things when I find them selling for cheap. The only problem: Many of these things just don't fit in with my home's decor. If you have the same problem, treat your garden to these pieces to give it a unique personality.
If you collect vintage bottle and fruit crates, now sitting in the garage because they don't fit in with your modernist vibe indoors, use the crates as storage for tools or seeds, or even as planters for individual herbs.
Here is my garden shed, all tricked out with girly pinks and whites, vintage illustrations and frilly fabrics. None of these things would fit with my home's decor, but in this girlish getaway, they are perfect.
Have you purchased so many items at garage sales that you could outfit an entire shed? Take a few days and make your utilitarian workhouse a delightful getaway. Painted furniture, vintage fabrics and girly touches can transform a space.
Maybe you don't need the space, but your grandchildren do. Pick up a section of countertop and a minisink from your nearest Habitat for Humanity store. Add various dishes and cookware from a thrift shop, and give the kids a play kitchen for under $20.
Maybe you have an abundance of baskets floating around your home. Collect all of the ones in one or two colors (say, blonde and natural brown) and group them with a simple bench outdoors. You now have a rustic, well-organized potting bench with plenty of storage.
Do you have more hanging baskets than you do plants? Try repurposing them for storage. They are perfect for storing string and rope; they also work well as catchalls for medium-size tools.
Do you have one too many shovels cluttering your shed? Turn them into clever door handles.
Smaller furniture pieces, such as the table, chair and bench seen here, are often seen in the trash pile. Be brave and rescue pieces from the curb before they end up in the dump.
Mismatched furnishings work nicely when the finishes are similiar. In this photo, the pieces all have a similiar worn, grayish patina. If you find disparate pieces, give them a coat of paint to make the grouping look more intentional.

Whether you spruce up curbside furniture with paint, repurpose an old blackboard or collect unique storage containers from your local thrift store, there are many ways to give your garden space personality on the cheap. Keep hunting, keep stockpiling and breathe new life into your garden sheds, cottages and playhouses with found treasures.
