Who has started planting? Who has finished planting?
Comments (86)How much of a leaf cover do you need for that? I don't really know. This is the first time I am planting in the front yard woods, after picking up sticks and limbs, trimming up some trees, pulling up tree seedlings, pulling up 'some' vines, and digging out lots and lots of May Apples, and raking aside all the leaf cover. Stringing the rows and doing the actual planting is the easiest part of the whole planting experience. I'd say the leaf cover is at least 6" or so. I kept watching the weatherunderground on the computer all day, hoping it would get warm. Even though it wasn't warm at 4 PM (was just 34 though it was sunny) I headed out to get a few planted. Surprisingly, I wasn't cold, the soil was wet, but not clumpy, my hands didn't get cold, and I managed to plant 15 little bags, 47 total bulbs. so all those from the front yard (city tree) went to the city for composting. How I wish I had trees that weren't all in the woods or at the edge of the woods. All the leaves at the edges of the yard are full of sticks and twigs. I used to sometimes go to friend's houses and do their leaves, just to get to bring them all home for the veggie garden. I've got this wonderful leaf shredder that reduces them 13 to 1, turning leaves into what I call brown gold. I think the little willow leaves should be fine. Last year I remember "discovering" that the open areas were frozen solid while those with some cover were not. I might be able to exploit that some year if I knew what to aim for. How deep? I wonder if you couldn't just cover an area with either clear plastic or black plastic to keep the warm in and the freezing cold out, thus lengthening the planting season so you could get in on the late sales, like from B and B's....See MoreHas Viking fixed its igniter problems in its new 2010 models?
Comments (3)My partner at work has an ancient Wolf cooktop. His electronic ignition has long passed its intended life. He uses a handy dandy long handled click lighter to turn his cooktop on! My 10 year old Viking clicks when I turn on the cooktop. After a while the clicking stops. It still works and cooks fine. I don't feel like spending couple hundred $ to fix it! Of all the things that can go wrong on an appliance, it is the easiest to work around! I HAD to fix my oven electronic igniter. It did not come on at ALL... My DW died. I HAD to replace that. I think all electronic igniters have their share of problems over time. My DCS BBQ also clicks and does funny things at times....See MoreFixed-price contract has Contractor's Fee % as well?
Comments (42)Vegiegardnr- Did you talk to you flooring person about thier hours? Not that it really should need to be any of your concern what it takes to run their business as long as you get the finished product that you are paying for (and of a reasonable quality), but there probably is a lot more to it than you seem to assume. You saw work from 10:30 -4:30 and decided that was lazy. There could have been other work that is necessary to their job that was happening during those "lazy off hours": Meeting other potential clients for quoting work, billing and paperwork for jobs done, billing and paperwork to pay supplier accounts, getting quotes or filling out forms for insurance and/or licensing, filling out forms for employees or past employees that need employment verifications for loans/apartment renting/new jobs, picking up materials for jobs or tool expendables, servicing of their truck or equipment that they use to do the work, researching and/or buying a new piece of equipment, going to a class about a new floor surfacing product, etc.. Based on how you present yourself here it seems you don't view contractors as human beings that "just might" be working hard to try to do good work. There are bad guys out there in all fields of work, but most contractors do not deserve the assumption that they are all just trying to find ways to overcharge and be lazy. Or maybe in your experience those are the only ones you've worked with - because as others have pointed out, contractors look at their potential clients in terms of risk of loss/stress/hassle/not getting paid/not getting sued, and the good self respecting contractors who have a good reputation and referral base don't need to take on risky/unpleasant work and probably steer clear of working with someone with those attitudes. Maybe next time - still protect yourself with reasonable due diligence, but treat the contractor as a human, ask (a reasonable amount) of polite and non judgemental questions if you don't understand where charges come from or why things cost what they do. Maybe then you'll have a better experience with your next contractor and start to shift your views away from assuming they're all bad....See MoreDesigner has no suggestions on how to fix grout
Comments (8)Project managing a GC partnership that you the homeowner hires and pays is a different scenario that allows a designer to be in charge of the outcome, but not be a contractor. Hiring and paying subs makes her the GC. If she is acting as the GC, is she actually a licensed GC in your state? Does she maintain the correct insurance to be able to act as a GC? Contracting without a license is not legal. And why did she not reschedule the tile work to a day when she would be able to get them started with clear instructions and be available to handle issues? And why were grout samples not prepared? Everyone has days of divided responsibilities and unavailability. She handled that portion poorly. And she should provide new tile and have it redone. If the counters are permanently damaged, they should be replaced as well. Sadly, all that really needed to be done was go have had the grout coated with an epoxy grout colorant. $15 worth of material and maybe $200 in labor, bevause there’s a lot of grout lines. This will be an expensive education for her. Which she should gladly pay, in order to learn to not make the same mistake again. If she is contracting without a license, it can have pretty far reaching consequences....See Morecatgalvin
