I'd advise AGAINST using Naval Jelly, at least until you exhaust other methods. One thing I've found to be particularly effective on cast iron is WD-40 and coarse steel wool. Hose the area down with WD-40, and then leave it sit for about 10 minutes. Then, hose it down again and scrub well with the steel wool, adding more WD-40 as necessary. This works well against light to moderate surface rust, and you don't run the risk of pitting that you do with Naval Jelly.

My experience with the Lopi and my criticism of it is based on comparing it with my pot belly in my work shop. A Vogelzang. A bit of paper a couple of sticks of wood and Voila, fire. In contrast the Lopi requires paper or a starter log, small wood then larger wood. Finally a fire but youÂre not finished. It requires constant tending. I attribute this to the poor design of the Lopi. It is designed as a piece of furniture. It looks nice. The pot belly is designed as a stove. It has a higher than wide fire box. Fires are vertical not horizontal. It has the fire separated from ashes with a grate. You can easily put long pieces in the top. Not so with the Lopi. Frankly it stinks as a stove. Not literally. So I want to switch which requires painting the pot so it will look more presentable. Now it looks God awful, all rusty and with this white stuff on top of the rust. The Lopi has a 6" stove pipe straight up through the roof. There is a sort of collar at the ceiling for which I canÂt remember how it is attached. I tried to lift the stove to see how heavy it was and it wouldnÂt budge. Possible that the pipe is screwed together so tight that it is keeping the stove from moving. I need to ask someone about the collar thing.

The temp has to be higher than the regular oven settings. If you have a self cleaning oven, that will get all that gunk off. My MIL had one they used for hunting camp that had that baked on stuff all over the outside as well as down the inside rim and most of the flat part of the pan. She was going to throw it out but I put it in my oven and turned that stuff to ash. If you don't have a self cleaning oven others here have posted about getting the coals in your grill hot and putting your pan in there to cook it off. I cana't personally attest to that method but that many KTers can't be wrong.. It's worth a try.

Not sure what’s recommended, but guessing it might be oxidation I would treat them like a cast iron pan, sand and season in the oven. Might want to look that up. I last attempt would be sand and use a high temp grill paint to make them look new.
