Restoring/Cleaning Cast Iron Stoves

My husband acquired an old Garrison wood burning stove before we met but couldn't use it in his condo. To prevent it from rusting he rubbed it down with vegetable oil (like you do to cast iron cookware which he collected too) instead of using a proper wood stove paint/finish. Although it prevented it from rusting it became a catchall for lint, animal hair, etc. We'd like to use it in our new home. How can we clean this up properly now and get it ready for use?
