Hey!!! I've got to get my vote in here. I'm obviously in the very minority, since I like mine UNDER the roll. I like having the tail hanging down so I can pull it, without the whole thing spinning out of control.

When it's over I have a hard time finding the end to pull it.
When it's under it's always hanging down where it can be easily grabbed.

I need some more support from other KT'ers!

I like TP over. I try to keep my clocks on the exact time. My in-laws were famous, they purposely set their kitchen clock 15 minutes ahead, so they would have "extra" time to get somewhere. It drove me crazy.

Cynic! We could be happy room mates! Socks, towels, lights, toothpaste. All in agreement. Please tell me you empty trash cans long before the trash gets to the top!

I usually put it on over. But if someone else in the house puts it on under, I leave it alone. I got enough to do, and it'll need changed again in a few days... or sooner. I'm just glad they changed it (and used it... thinking of the young 'uns here).

Wildchild, I snorted at you, "It's fresher." What?! The outer layer is against the wall no matter how it hangs. Believe what you need to believe, though. ;o) Or just make sure you're using the inside.

Several years ago, large family gathering at my parent's home. Several women, different generations, were talking about an episode of Oprah some of us saw about mother/daughter relationships. One daughter on the show complained that her mother criticized everything she did in her own house, even told her she hung TP wrong. We were mostly saddened that a mother would go that far, clearly not something that should get in the way of life. Except my great aunt... she stood up, showed us all her pinky finger and said "There is a right way to hang TP! How do you think I broke my nail today? I had to change Susie's TP just a few minutes ago!" She was serious!

Now every time I change an empty roll at mom's, I think about my great aunt's broken nail. ;o)

The *real* question is, do you roll, fold or wad?

Mine has been over the top since way back when my kids were little. I always had it under then. I noticed that the paint wore away quicker around where the tp was. Finally realized no hands would 'rub' the walls if the tp came out over the top. Voila, problem solved.

I can be Cynic's and Caroline's 3rd room mate. As long as I can bring my dogs. LOL

Caroline we only use plastic grocery bags hung in a wire holder under the in the kitchen sink cabinet so they don't hold a lot. Bag gets tied off,smooshed down and taken out to the main can at about 2/3 full. Sometimes it means 3 times a day but that's how we do it.

I don't "get" people with towels on the floor,lights left on,toilet seats left up,pee on the floor etc. Don't they teach their kids (grown or otherwise). I have never had my DS of DH leave pee on the floor or leave the toilet seat up. In fact our lid is always down and I can tell when someone from outside the family visits.

OOh, wildchild! In my house, in MY bathroom, the TP is always hung over the top, the towels are always hung, and the toilet and surrounding area is always clean..if DH hasn't been in there.

In HIS bathroom, there are towels on the floor, a toilet that really should have been cleaned a month ago, and a floor that's a mess. THAT is the "man" bathroom. I don't use it, I don't clean it! It's next to the garage, and that's where he and his buddies hang out, so it doesn't bother me.

I've been doing a lot of cooking lately, feeding a largely volunteer crew, so I have a lot of trash. Veg peelings and plate scrapings and such go in the compost. The quite large trash can is emptied every day, also the compost basin.

Does he wash the towels?

I don't care as long as it rolls off.. however, when ever my son comes home, he takes it off the holder entirely. He doesn't like it on the holder at all!

Mine has to go over. And DS and I are the only ones that will make sure it is put on the holder (he shares our bathroom). I have been tempted to put a sign in the bathroom that says:

"Contrary to popular belief, changing the toilet paper roll does not cause brain damage."

I hate overflowing trash, but admittedly, OCCASIONALLY, the bathroom used to overflow a bit. I solved that a few years ago though, hopefully, by bringing a supply of larger bags up. When it gets full, it's dumped in a large one (the wastebasket in there is small and lined with a plastic grocery bag. Perfect fit.) I recycle so much that I don't build up a lot of garbage.

To me, the seat used to be left up and women would get a lecture. Served 'em right! LOL But after seeing how much bacteria is sprayed around a room (up to 8'-10' away) and at the time I had my toothbrush out, I said no more. Lid is down all the time and toothbrush goes in a drawer. Plus I use bleach tablets and when I had the dog, I wanted the lid down so he wouldn't try to drink out of there, and that little fart would probably fall in!

When I'm at someone else's place, I respect how they have it. If they have the lid up, I leave it that way. Seems a simple courtesy. But one friend was a fanatic about "put the seat down!!!!" so I'd always put the LID down and tell her she's uncivilized.

Caroline & Wildchild you're welcome to move in. But we'll need to build another bathroom or two. Not the his-n-her's thing but rather MINE and anyone elses! Prefer nobody else even BE in my bathroom, how's that for a quirk? Maybe move a couple porta-potties into the front yard? Put signs on them "OVER" and "UNDER". Oh, but one caution: I do have some corded phones here, you better not tangle up the cords! The coils need to be perfect and it better hang properly - no twists! And if you use up the paper in the printer, add some! LOL

Whoa, now... WAY more than I care to know!!! The better question is does the dog twist or scoot?

One other thing though, I'm also a fanatic to NEVER run out of toilet paper. Don't know why, never did run out or anything. Never really raised that way except we never did run out. I used to buy the stuff by the case when Target had the paper sale with Charmin on but now I buy the huge rolls, they last a long time and I have a good supply.

With all my quirks, you'd think I live in a spotless, totally uncluttered place, right? You'd THINK that, maybe....

I read somewhere, once, it saves money to have it roll under and I tried it. I couldn't stand it so now it is over.
It can't save that much money and my sanity is worth more!

DH insists on over so over it goes, I used to keep it under, the cat could not roll it off and drag it across the room that way! (I stood one day and watched Monkey Cat undo about 1/2 the roll before she stopped!, that was some 25 years ago, thanks for the memory of a wonderful cat!)

Over here too. I'm old enough to remember when there were designs on TP and if you hung it under the design was upside down. I don't guess it matters that much with the designs they have now, but old habits are hard to break.

When one looks for the hanging tail on an over, one looks in vain. It takes heavy scratching with a finger nail to find it and get it freed from the rest of the roll enough to grab it.

And when you start to pull, it pulls the tube down against the spindle so it binds some.

When it's under, there's almost always a tail hanging down that's easy to take hold of. Then, when you pull gently on the tail, it tends to lift the tube a bit from the roller, so instead of binding, it rolls really easily.

Anyone with a logical mind knows that.

If you've ever had a kitten, you'd be putting it on so it hangs from the back, or under. If you like to fold a pretty point on it, for decoration, it hangs over the top.

I have it both ways in my house, different ways for different bathrooms, but I don't really care if someone puts on a new roll in a different way, it's just TP. With just the 2 of us, and both of us perfectly capable of changing out a roll, it's liable to go on either way, but when the old roll gets low, I usually switch it out and put the nearly empty one on top. I don't understand why so many people (not here, but in real life) act like putting on a new roll is such a big deal, what does it take, 2 seconds?

My husband insists that it be over. Doesn't matter to me. Way back when I had toddlers, they liked to play with the roll when it was placed in the over position, so I would change it. Wouldn't you know, he would change it! So it is over. I think I will put the next roll in under and see if he changes it.

Toilet Paper

Fresh from her shower, a woman stands in front of the mirror, complaining to her husband that her breasts are too small.

Instead of characteristically telling her it's not so, the husband uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion: "If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between your breasts for a few seconds."

Definitely over for me. Not that it happens very often, but if DH or DS change the roll and it is under, I will change it back to over. But I wouldn't do that in anyone else's house - just mine.

I don't put mine on a roller. I keep it and a spare roll on the little table in front of the toilet. the roller is on the cabinet wall next to the john and too hard to twist around to it.

I am just happy there is toilet paper.

Since I got Mason, I can't keep toilet paper on the roller. I have to keep it in the undersink cabinet.

The little twerp takes it right off the roller and shreds the entire roll.

As I said earlier ... for several reasons - under makes a lot more sense.

As one who makes notes and writings, and needs to store them somewhere, who uses folders for that ...

...and likes to keep things simple ...

Roll off six (thin stuff) fold in half, then triple.

Works for my size of ass, anyway.

As a frugal fellow, you above all should realize that such a binding would encourage the use of less product, thereby saving money. ADVANTAGE: Over

Plus any perceived ease is offset by a thing called gravity which would aid the "over" folks. ADVANTAGE: Over

And as far as the tail hanging down... onto the wall, floor and whatever else? No. ADVANTAGE: Over

Besides, if the weight of the TP against the spindle or if someone can't find the end of the roll, they have far bigger problems than which way the paper is! :)

There's a right way and a wrong way to do things. The only logical way is the way God meant it to be. OVER. Under and uncivilized start with the same letter for a reason. If you can't to it right, then set it on the counter. (Flat side down.) Need to know WHICH side goes up????

Just hangs three or four inches down - easy to grab hold of ... none of this scratching the roll with the fingernail to find the on-top-end.

I personally don't see the advantage of "over" at all.
I've always used mine under, as does my family.
DH always says over, is the way to go.

When I use his bathroom, I have to spin the roll, so the end frees so I can grab it. Having mine under, the tail is there in plain sight to grab it.

To me, it's more frustrating to have it over.

No matter how I hang mine, my kitten unrolls it, so I keep a washcloth over it.

Over, always, and I fold, not roll or wad.

For those of you who do it under, do you do the same with your paper towels?

I don't have my paper towels on a roll, they sit upright. But when I had them on a roll years ago, YES they hung under.

Well, the TP is hung over the top in my house, but as long as there is a roll, I really don't care.

But if someone chose to change how I'd put the roll on the holder, I'd consider that extremely rude! I'd never consider changing the orientation of someone's TP roll, or their towel arrangement, or the pictures on their walls - it's all the same.

I thought of this thread while using the washroom at the restaurant. The washroom's toilet paper rolls were all "unders" which happens to be my preference. I recall more public washrooms with their rolls under than over.
If this is truly the case, that must drive you "overs" crazy! LOL
And can that many people be wrong?.......

Now, for this purported issue of can't find the end... Sheesh! 96% of the time it's right there! LOL Staring right at you. How can you NOT find it? It doesn't normally tear off behind the roll like when put on incorrectly. And a little tip, start turning the roll, and you'll usually find it. There's the hint for the day.

And I have to wonder, if you can't find the end of the toilet paper with both hands, can you find the other end??? :)

I should start selling a new toilet paper product for you people who can't find the end. Pop-up cheek scrape. Works like facial tissue. Set it on the floor, the vanity, edge of the tub or the back of the terlit. But then there's always those who insist on being backward and have it come from the bottom of the box. But that's their problem! :)

I don't have any problems finding the "business end" just want to find the toilet paper quick and easy.

So it's YOU Cate...who I hear trying to turn those oversized rolls in the stall next to me! hahahaaa.
