Is the range glossy?
What color are the other appliances?
Is the paint on the hood flat or is it more like a semi-gloss?
If flat, how easy will it be to clean?
If semi-gloss it's probably OK.
How locked in to VAH are you?
Modern Air will make anything you want although $$$.

The range is definitely glossy. Sorry, I should have been more specific. The other appliances are all stainless.

The VAH website lists the black as semi-gloss. It was really hard to tell from the chip, but it was certainly looked flat compared directly with the range. Of course, the hood won't be sitting ON the range...

At this point, I'm maxing out what I want to spend on a range hood. Since I have to get a 48", I can't afford to splurge on a totally custom hood. Plus, I'm getting a slight discount on the VAH and don't think I will find a better hood for the price I'm paying.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the black was actually cheaper than stainless, because I really think a black hood will compliment the range nicely. I also think the black will look nice against the cream glass tile backsplash.

So, you think a semi-gloss will blend ok?

I think that since there is some separation between the range and the hood, and the fact that you're doing an edge detail in SS, it will look fine.
You might try getting a can of semi-gloss spray paint and making a mock-up to get a better idea.
Your only other option would seem to be SS or possibly enclosing the hood to match the cabinetry, but I don't know if that would go with your plan or budget.

Hope you will enjoy your black hood. Just a personal bias--an angled black hood will always be dusty. It will need dusting every day or two at the very least. From the practical point of view, I'd take something not black but then, it's not my kitchen.

Well, I guess one way to look at it is that a stainless one would be dusty too - I just wouldn't see it as much, right?

Of course, one of the DHs many allergies is dust, so I have to keep it to a minimum as much as possible.

Maybe we should consider another shape?

I don't like the heavy visual weight of the black hood in the middle of your cream cabinetry. The range in black sitting on the floor works well to ground the run, but I think cream or stainless for the hood would work better. Can they color match the hood to the cabinets?

Not to muddy the waters, but the elements that I worry more about not working together from that view of things is actually the cabinets and backsplash. Both are lovely, but it appears on my screen like the cabinets have a yellow/warm tone and the backsplash has more of a gray/cool tone. I'm worrying that these two are not going to work together in a cohesive way and might end up fighting each other or looking disjointed...

Steph - I guess I can see your point. My problem is that I am drawn to the cooler colors in the tiles. Does that mean I have to rethink the cabinet color? I meet with the contractor tonight to get everything set in motion. So I need figure out what I want soon. I thought the paint was something I didn't need to consider anymore.

Our table already has a yellow tint to the paint, so that's why I thought the yellowy cream would work well.

UGH - now I'm not sure what to do.

Since the Berta is our big splurge in the kitchen, I am happy with it and the hood being center stage. I figure that since the island will be hiding Berta a little, the black hood will be a nice way to draw the eye in that direction. Am I off base?

I think your choices work well together.
The only thing I might consider is making the floor darker.
But that's just my personal bias.

actually, that last picture of samples is not the floor color we chose. Ours is darker - more along the lines of what's on the mood board in the original post.

Or were you thinking darker than that?

I figure with two big dogs and 3 active boys, anything darker would show a lot of wear pretty quick.

The backsplash is beautiful - I totally see why you are committed to it. You are there in person and monitors don't show color accurately, so the best I can say is trust your eye. The last pic you posted looks a lot less warm/yellowish than the others... I'd personally recommend you to weigh the backsplash much more highly than the table in terms of picking cabinet color.

Thanks Steph. I guess you could say it's exciting to pull the trigger, but more like nauseating to me - I haven't slept much all week.

Marcolo - I tend to agree with you on the wood. I asked if it was too red in a previous thread and I didn't get any other comments. It's natural cherry - the sample is nearly a year old, from when we first started planning, so I don't know if it will change much more.

The table top has a lot of red tones in it and that bay window is going to be encased in the cherry with a built in seat there. Other the woods, that's all that it ties to.

I suppose I could consider staining it something instead of just going natural. All of the olive tones in the tile really make it look red to me.

Here's my floorplan so you can get an idea of where the window is compared to the rest of the kitchen...

ayerg73 -- No opinion about the matte hood, sorry -- and think your mood board looks good. I'm curious about the backsplash you are showing. Do you mind sharing details? TIA!

I love your choices. I was so close to purchasing a black range hood for that pop and my upper cabinets will be painted a lighter color. DH is a big fan of stainless (former restaurant manager) in the cooking area. So stainless it is for us. Dust will collect on the hood, but a simple wipe down with a microfiber wand will resolve that issue.

As far as gloss/semi-gloss - I believe the Bert is more semi-gloss. Gloss is where you can see yourself on the finish (almost mirror-like).

Hard to say without seeing the chips or range in person, but my instinct is that it will be fine. I agree about the floor being a little too red, but other than that, I think your choices are just beautiful. Definitely go for the black range hood--it will make your Bertazzoni the star in the kitchen. (I'm biased, of course, since I have a black hood over a black Lacanche!)

oldbat2be - the tile is from Sonoma. It's the Vihara collection. Color is Karuna in silk.

anna - I'm glad to know you like your black hood. I tried to search for your kitchen, but didn't have any luck. (I'm never sure I'm looking the right way on this site...) Any chance you could share a pic with me?

As far as the cherry - that's not the floor, it's the wood for my island and the casing for the windows as well as the seat there.

I'm not sure I want to go darker and I know my builder has probably already bought the cherry. So, I might rethink the backsplash so it ties in better.

I'm starting to lean towards a light sage green subway with lots of variation. That will pull out the green veins in the SS nicely, hopefully coordinate with the red (I'm thinking redheads always look best in green, right? LOL) and look nice next to the yellowy cream cabs.

What makes it worse is that we're in a small town and I have to travel 2+ hours to get to any really big tile shops with some of the brands of tile I'm interested in.
