Some places on the deck only had an inch, other spots had 12-14". Thought it wouldn't be too bad journeying out to feed the critters. Opened the door from the garage to the backyard and I swear I started shoveling about 10" deep and by the time I got to the garden gate it was 36" deep. (not really, but with a puppy SITTING in the snow shovel it seemed a lot deeper than it was!) The gates all open IN towards the garden, so it's a shove a little, scoop a little and finally the gate opens enough to squeeze through. Then it's shovel behind the gate so it will open all the way, shovel over to the straw pile, shovel over to the gate to the hen yard, clear that, go back and get an armful of straw to make a path to the chickens and the hen house to dig out their door and let them out. I just plowed my way in knee deep snow to the sheep hay stack and manhandled the gate to get in. Back to the front of the garden and shovel the 14" in front of the greenhouse door. Time to sit down with a cup of hot tea and a heating pad! Tell me again why I live in snow country.......oh, yeah, it's really pretty here!

So.
What you are saying is in addition to the wind blowing existing snow all over the place (which I am assuming accounts for the drifted in gates) there WAS something falling from the sky as well?

(Why didn't you tell the puppy get off the shovel we'll play in a minute? What kind of puppy?)

That's what happened here last night.

I talked to my brother and he scoffed when I said it was snowing. Their skies (90 miles north in Wyoming) were clear and it was ten below. He said are you sure it is snowing and I, like a dummy and I know better, started doubting myself so stuck my head out the back door and ducked back in quick but not quick enough for the snow to not blow on my glasses and said to him, on the phone I can't tell because the wind is blowing too hard.

Custer shoveled a good 8 inches off the deck.
A tractor is needed to plow out the drive way so we're still wallowing to the barn. Four wheel drive helps a lot.

Then he gets to the ranch and the road is blown in at the gate there too. He had to get the tractor out to plow an approach. He had the trailer on so didn't dare bust a trail with the truck.

Did it ever get warm down there?

We haven't gone over fifteen degrees all day even though the sun shown most of the time.

This IS the final storm for a few days, isn't it?
I'm gettin a little sick of winter......

Note: forget the heating pad and make the puppy cuddle up to you! LOL

A lot of the snow we had had melted into "ponds" and the rest was crusted over. The 1-14" was new stuff. It cleared up nicely for a while but gave us a brief snowsquall this afternoon. We did warm up to 28* today. It was nice in the sun, but downright cold in the shade. I managed to hit the pine tree branch with the end of the shovel and was treated to snow down the back of my neck, brrrr. Willow is a 14 week old blue merle Aussie puppy, my agility prospect. Don't want to discourage her investigating new things, even if it means twice the work. She played "queen of the hill" on the snowbank today and had us in stitches with her wild antics, flinging herself to the top and tumbling down the other side, jumping around like a wild March hare. I'm hoping for a few days of sun, tired of the dreary grey and cold myself. The sky is gorgeous after a storm tho, isn't it! Just think of all the water we'll have this summer.

East Coast from Maine (very San Francisco-like summer weather) Not quite: last I checked it does rain in the summer in Maine. Not that you don't know this, but I'm pointing it out for anyhow who doesn't. Nights are cooler in San Francisco but record highs are somewhat comparable; and in fact if you look at a place like Provincetown, MA, they actually slightly favor the east! 98F in Ptown versus 103F in San Francisco. This helps explains the report about a decade ago of an Austrocedrus chilensis being found on Cape Cod, a plant which would not otherwise grow in the hot & humid eas. (In the sense that maximum temperature indexes to average fairly consistently, at least on a big continent like ours - of course other factors play a role too. Cape Cod is protected from excessive summer rainfall compared to much of the eastern US, so that probably helped prevent root rot. The cold water quenches mesoscale convective systems so that they don't dump 2 inches in a single storm, but the particular location along the jet stream pattern means drought tends to be rare, too. I cannot say how many systems I see split over the Ohio & Tennessee Valleys with a good chunk going north to NY & MA, and a southern branch going to NC & SE VA. We in DC & Baltimore are in a kind of "horse latitudes".) If you live on the West Coast, the Sunset system obviously remains the preferred one. You have more crazy microclimates in the Bay Area than the entire east coast of the US does. The being said most gardeners I know think the new USDA map is a vast improvement. It's just less useful in a highly terrain influenced marine/west coast climate like CA/OR/WA where almost all of the "action" is happening in zones 10, 9 and 8.

I wish I had pics!! The kitchen cabinet-carts were in a rental house built by a retired carpenter; apparently his own idea. The counters were standard height, each unit immediately beneath the counter had a shallow drawer. Below that was the cart, an open wood frame with one end that looked like a cabinet-style door with a toe-kick but off the floor about Â¼". When the cart was pushed under the counter, all you noticed was the "door" which matched the other cabinet doors. I remember there were wooden plinths which actually looked like the standard vertical cabinet dividers; the plinths acted as a stop so you couldn't push the cart through and smash the wall at the back. Most of the carts had adjustable "shelves" (shallow baskets actually) and two had a countertop for the top shelf -- I really loved those when I baked. I liked another of his ideas for some of the wall cabinets. The door of the cabinet was actually a shallow box with shelves (facing the usual shelves) that were just wide enough to hold cups or canned goods. I've haunted websites and carpentry info, and haven't found anything really close, although there are lots of cart plans available. So now I'm looking for a carpenter! Depending on which sort of crafts your DW is into, also consider adapting stackable shoe drawers -boot size-, maybe hidden behind bi-folds. I use these for storing sweatshirts in the BR as well as hold yarns in the craftroom. Sweater size hold flatwork. Link is to the ones I use -- I've got them stacked 9 tall with no problems. Chris, Thank you for your continued comments. 1. Do you have a preference out of the two options of the top roofline as in the previous post? If I go with the architect's design, I would keep the same pitches for all top roof sections to get rid of the sharp angle. I also understand that I may need to align the walls or do some cantilever roof/2nd floor to allow for my simplification. 2. How about the two gables? Are they appropriate here or you like all hipped roofs better? These are the two main decisions that I need to make before we settle on a general form of design. There are many other issues to consider when we move on to the next stage. Re: SU drawings It is hard for me to articulate what I dislike about the current design or what a desired design would be. I was trying to use SU to communicate my ideas to the architect. If you see this as distraction other than help with the ideas, I guess I really shall refrain from doing more drawings. The architect must be frustrated with my attempt to revise the roofs / exteriors too. He really think there is not much to be revised architecturally. He did not recommend me talking to builders about construction cost as he said they would simply charge me more when they saw such a beautiful house designed by an architect :). Well, I have been worried if the house looks so bad that it would not be acceptable to our neighbors or an average buyer. Talking about perception difference. Re: Garage offset outside building line While the HOA CCR calls for 7ft side setbacks, the subdivision plat from the city requires 10ft. I already did a hearing with the city and obtained approval of the left neighbor side 7ft setback when I was doing the planning with the first designer. The architect said he needed the extra 3ft to open the view from the great room/breakfast area. He said he would submit the construction document to see permit and if not approved he can change it. I would rather do a second hearing before finalizing the plan.

Beckyg, I love what you said here: "When the kitchen designers and cabinet and appliance makers are telling me to spend 10 - 15% of my home's value on a new kitchen, I automatically cut it in half... it reminds me of how the diamond dealers came up with the idea that a man should spend 2 months salary on a ring - OR ELSE! That's ridiculous. What an arbitrary number." Totally arbitrary, I agree. I specifically told my sweetie that he shouldn't spend more than two WEEKS' salary on my ring, and he didn't. I couldn't stand the stress of walking around with $6000 or $10,000 or whatever on my finger, and there was just no way I could see that it made sense to sink so much money into a piece of jewelry. I guess the reason I'm more okay with the 10% thing on kitchens... ok, well part of it is because our house is worth maybe $270k. Actually I think that's the main reason I'm okay with it! Because 10-15% of MY house corresponds pretty well with the maximum that I think makes sense to spend on a kitchen. Haha. I can't imagine spending $150k on a kitchen. But aside from that, a kitchen--assuming you're going to live in it for a good while--has a much bigger influence on your quality of life than a ring does. The spaces we inhabit really do influence the ways we live--like the poster who talked about molesting her marble (haha) and said her kids used the new island and socialized whereas before they would've retreated to their rooms. It does matter how living spaces are designed and how they look. The way they look and they way they flow and function influences not only how you feel in them, but what you do in them. That's why I am dead set on having a banquette and table in the kitchen instead of the ubiquitous "raised edge of the counter with barstools" that our ex-architect kept pushing. We're planning on having kids soon, and it would be what, six years or more before they'd be big enough to easily use barstools and a raised counter?! Whereas little kids can easily sit on banquettes, space to hold kids' toys can be built into banquettes, AND our friends can sit there too when they're visiting. Space matters!
