Removing wallpaper from unfinishted/untextured drywall - help?
Comments (5)Yes, expect to have a huge mess. I had a bathroom with that problem. Since the surface was vinyl, I had to remove it. The mess was terrible. I got the vinyl and the paper backing along with a lot of the drywall paper off the walls. I coated the bare gypsum with Gardz. When it dried, I kept filling the deepest dents with thin layers of joint compound, then eventually did a skim coat of the walls. More Gardz, good primer then two coats of paint. It looked good and held up well. But it was a lot of work. Having removed layer after layer of painted wallpaper, it's not something I recommend. A lot depends on how picky you are. Painted wallpaper never looks great, but you may decide that it's "good enough" when compared to the work to remove it and patch the walls. If you go that route, you have to remove any lose paper, sand lumpy seams, etc. then seal it with Gardz, then prime and paint. It may still bubble or loosen, but that's your best shot if you want to paint over it....See MoreDamage to wall from wallpaper removal
Comments (7)Yes, Chris is right. If the wallboard is damaged or unprimed then you should do the Gardz twice as he suggests both before and after skimming. Sorry I got it "wrong" on my previous advice.... was thinking of the last room that I did. It had been painted then later had wallpaper put on the lower half. When removing the paper, I did very little damage that penetrated the paint layer. Was basically just trying to neutralize any glue that I hadn't gotten off, so I didn't Gardz first. Just did a few very minor touchups here and there with the joint coupound and then Gardz, then a coat of 123 primer since the paint color was going to be a big change, then the paint. Worth all of the trouble to have smooth perfect walls!...See MoreRemoving wallpaper from one wall only
Comments (7)I don't think it's a big deal. Use a straight edge and a razor blade to strike straight lines into the corners; steam off the wallpaper you don't want; slip a little wallpaper paste behind any loose edges of the remaining wallpaper and smooth them down with a smoothing knife....See MoreHow can I remove adhesive stick on wallpaper panels from sheetrock?
Comments (6)Unfortunately, Contact adhesive remaining is still a problem. That is the problem I had with the wallcovering I mentioned in the above post. You shouldn't just paint over the residue. This is similar to the problem when you pull a mirror off the wall or glued on paneling, and find gobs of black mastic. The easiest way to get rid of it is to cut around the gob with a razor knife and then peel the drywall paper off. Seal the drywall paper with an oil or shellac based primer, and then patch it with drywall compound....See Morehousekeeping
