can i paint cabs after the granite is in?

i'm still here yall, and need more advice. afraid to actually "pull the trigger" and start sanding.

we are diy'ers, looking to update. click on pics to enlarge.

decided:

a. granite:

b. floor:

c. useless desk area (not shown) to be replaced with 3 base cabs painted distressed black

We want: to update cabinets with crown mold, maybe light rail, and moulding on exposed sides of cabs. (3 lower and 3 upper)

option 1: paint cabs cream with glaze, all trim to be the same including wainscoting behind peninsula. will be more uniform with all trim the same.

? too much cream/beige.

option 2: leave cabs oak, but will need a new coat of varnish, all new added trim to be black including toe kick, (maybe distressed)

? too much "cut up looking" with the black "box" around the oak cab

i cant decide. what do you all think?

can i just put the granite in and decide later?

It's a personal taste, but I don't like black crown around the top of cabinets that are stained.. I've seen it, and it just looks odd to me. BUT hey thats just me. I would paint the cabinets, but be sure you fill in the grain for a true finished (piano) look, or you could revarnish. Either could be done before or after the grainite IMO. I think I would wait on any black crown, if that is what you are leaning too, until after the granite is installed. Your granite is beautiful and in my opinion you don't need to outline the top of your cabinets...although crown in the same finish would be very pretty.

I'm going to search the net for a pic of the house with the black crown. It was for sale. If I find it I will post the pic for you to see.

debbie2008, thank you for weighing in on this. what product would i use to fill in the grain, where in the sequence would i use it? also, is it applied only to the flat part of the raised panel, or do you put it all over the face frame, the sides of the door etc.

I have definitely seen this look, especially to highlight a certain area. For example, I saw a whole kitchen of wood cabinets, with a painted wood hood, stove surround cabinets, to set off the range. It looked great. Sorry I don't know where I saw it. I considered this look in my kitchen but I think that having different colors/finishes will make my small kitchen look smaller. If it were one of those big grand kitchen I'd probably go for that. Also I often see the island in a different finish from the rest of the cabinets and it looks really nice.

Do you have a fabric choice in there already, what about floors or anything else that you need to "relate" to? Just going by what you mentioned, cherry cabs look great with greens. Sherwin Williams Svelte Sage or Benjamin Moore Baby turtle have fan clubs on the home dec forum. Consider re-posting this there for more expert help. Kathe

We had planned on Bodbyn cabs, but because of the sale, too many were out of stock, so we opted for Diamond cabs with slab doors in Storm gray. I think the Costa Rose granite would have looked great with them, it is a pretty granite with a lot of movement but low contrast colors so it does not loo too busy. If it had been my kitchen, I'd have opted for Corian Silver Birch or Arrowroot I think.

I would google for info on how to paint Oak cabinets. If you don't fill in the grain, they will look like oak cabinets with white paint. They will not have the smooth paint finish as they would if they were cherry or maple. It can be achieved but not without proper prep work. A good paint store could also tell you what to use, I would think.

Check the finished kitchen blog- gives lots of ideas-I have oak cabinets, painted cream and glazed- and filled in grain- all of my details and products used are on the site (on this site too -thread-before/pics-oak to cream/glaze-
A friend of mine did not fill the grain and the result was a much more rustic look -I went for a more formal look- and filled the grain-debbie is right on- prep work is key!- good luck!Look forward to the before and after!

Hi,

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth, that filling the grain is a preference, not a requirement. I have painted oak cabinets in both my laundry and bathrooms and I actually like the look of painted oak, grain showing and all. Here are some examples from my bathroom where I repainted an old vanity that I don't want to replace until two teenage boys are grown, and my laundry room where I repurposed some recently removed kitchen cabinets.

so did you cover the whole door, or just the flat parts with the grain filler? and did you do the face of the cabinet? and what did you use to spread it on with? brush, spackle knife?

nodirthere, it was your kitchen I posted the link to. It is gorgeous...excellent job. I didn't know Oak could look so good painted. I have an oak vanity in my boys bath and I am sooo going to follow your instructions for painting it. I printed them LOL

I prefer all cabinetry to have that factory finish..a personal thing.

Thank you scrapinsal-I had my painter do the painting and I did the glazing- he did sand and fill all of it-it was trial and error and ended up actually spackling to really give it the piano finish I wanted. I think there has to be a product out there that is better/easier to fill the grain-hopefully someone out there will tell all!
Debbie- thank you- I wanted what I had seen at the showrooms - it is a personal thing- I didn't fill-in the insides of the doors-when I get my camera up and running again I'll snap a close up of both sides- It totally changes the whole feel of the cabinet when the grain is filled- My painter was psyched when he didn't have to do the inside! We had oak in all of our houses and I was just really sick of it!- I'm going to attempt my bathroom next too- I may have my painter do the doors again though- he has a paint sprayer set up in his garage -I'll ask him if it would make a big difference if I used a brush or fine roller-I just really liked how he did these- wait, what am I thinking -it's freezing here in Chicago-he can't paint in the garage....
