can i do mix of painted/non-painted cabs?

I just can't make up my mind about what I want! I see non-painted wood cabs and think they look great, but worry it will be too much wood with the wood floors. i see painted cabs and worry that light colors will a) show dirt quickly, b) will show cracks, (GC warned me today that painted cabs are doomed to crack) and c) I have that now and I'd like a change-- dark colors would be a big change-- maybe too big for me. I'm just overwhelmed by all the lovely colors!

So . . . what about doing part of my run of cabs as painted and part as non-stained? I say "non-painted" rather than stained because I can't decide what stain is best, so maybe just use a beeswax finish over bare wood?

has anyone seen this look?

(have you ever heard of such a mixed up person? help! I'm TKOoooooooo!)

I have definitely seen this look, especially to highlight a certain area. For example, I saw a whole kitchen of wood cabinets, with a painted wood hood, stove surround cabinets, to set off the range. It looked great. Sorry I don't know where I saw it. I considered this look in my kitchen but I think that having different colors/finishes will make my small kitchen look smaller. If it were one of those big grand kitchen I'd probably go for that. Also I often see the island in a different finish from the rest of the cabinets and it looks really nice.

We are doing painted cabinets and a wood island. Not sure how it looks since the island hasn't arrived.

I think your mix will look great. One of the trends now is to mix materials and surfaces, as long as they are united in color or blend. I think the mix of painted and stained cabinets will make your kitchen look much more interesting and feel more personal . . . but of course I'm mixing laminate, steel, and wood in a modern design, so I love different materials. Go for it!

cat_herder - There's acrylic based plasters which are much easier to work with than plaster of paris. I'm sorry I didn't find this post until now. Google "venetian plaster" and you should get a lot of hits. I've used the Texston products and they're a breeze. They don't set up as fast. I've also used drywall mud & glazed over it. Not as sturdy as any of the other plaster alternatives. I don't recommend going that route unless budget is a serious, serious issue. Glad to hear that the plaster of paris worked. -a

Thanks everyone, but I made a huge mistake. My cabs will be maple fronts, doors and side, the rest will be MDF. Cab guy is finishing the interior and I"ll be painting the exterior. Here's a link to how I want the painted parts to look (Sorry, I stole this pic from one of you, can't remember who but I love your work!!). What brand/type primer, paints, brushes and gage of sandpaper do you recommend. And yes, I'm double posting this over to the kitchen forum as well. Hi 3Daisies, I love the combinations of two different countertops. Seeing some in person and gorgeous photos on GW, I have been swayed. I love the look. And don't be afraid of movement. I know you are looking for something simple but the right rock will look amazing. Have you thought about Jet Mist (Virginia Mist granite) Some have lots of movement but I saw some very simple grayish black slabs with almost no pattern. This looks like soapstone but works like a granite. It could be an option for you. Butcher Block, Quartz Black, Pearl Gray, Blue Pearl (Which can look gray), Slate, Soapstone, Nordic Black Granite, Azul Aran (has movement but looks nice with white marble) .... so many to list. Here are some ideas, to keep your mind working on this wonderful kitchen. We have a mix of painted an stained. Cream paint, Alder stained. This pic is poor but hope it helps.

My kitchen is long and fairly narrow-- so maybe chopping up the look will actually be nice. I'm so eager to start I'd just about agree to anything at this point!

There are lots of people here with a mix of stained and painted cabinets. We're going to have a mix of fir finished in clear Waterlox, gray painted cabinets in the stove area, a cream painted island, and a run of burgundy cabinets on the side wall. Then add to that our 3 countertop choices, and you may not define yourself, in comparison, as 'mixed up' anymore!

It's all still under construction...Maybe ready for a couple of photos by early next week...but here's a rendering close to what it's going to look like.

Lynn r Ct, I may have given you premature hope. Just realized that my cabinets should be installed by over the weekend, but the doors won't be on yet, so the effect of the different colors won't really be there until at least another week after that, probably. If you go to 'my page,' you can email me, then I can email photos as we get further along. Or keep an eye on my photobucket album and I'll try to keep it updated.

Hi, I am using two tones also. I will have painted cream cabs on the walls and a medium stained wood on the bottoms and tall pantry cabinets. They are sitting in the garage waiting to be installed in a few weeks (hopefully!) There are some gorgeous kitchens in the FKB with this concept.
