How to clean slate/concrete floor

I have a heated closed in covered porch on a 1920's colonial style house. The floor is composed of irregularly shaped and colored large slate pieces with a "grout" (concrete?, mortar?) line varying from 1/2" to 2 1/2 ," surrounded by a concrete border of about a foot and a half. The whole thing is covered with what looks like some sort of polyurethane. All looks VERY dirty. I've taken off the polyurethane in one corner, but the dirt appears embedded into the concrete. How can I safely clean the concrete and slate without damaging the stones? Should I try to do something to "improve" the looks of the concrete border. I hate to just cover the floor with a rug because the slate is really quite beautiful, uncracked (there's a steel beam underneath the floor supporting it), and certainly long wearing!
