Mine, too. I enjoy Southern Accents, Traditional Home, House Beautiful, Cottage Living, Southern Living. (Ha - kind of see a trend here, huh?) Every once in a while I'll flip through an Architectural Digest, but my home is far too "humble" to compare to most of their featured articles.

My favorite is Beautiful Homes,its alittle more pricey then some,but theres virtually no adds. I also like Renovation Style.

I guess I haven't seen that one. I checked out the info and decided to subscribe. Can't wait to check it out, especially if there are few/no ads!!!

Southern Accents and House Beautiful!

New Old House, Traditional Home, Southern Accents, Country Living

My style is traditional and I own an old house. My magazine trifecta is House Beautiful, Traditional Home and This Old House.

I can't recommend any because the ones I subscribed to were nothing but, ads!! I'm so upset by that. I had Cottage Living (the worst of them all) and Southern Living, which had more recipe's than anything else I was interested in. I think I'll take the advice of others and try Beautiful Homes. I don't mind paying more if I get what I'm paying for and not a lot of ads!!

teacats, I take Veranda and Victoria, too, but don't you find that their quality is not consistent? The new Victoria isn't nearly as good as the old one, or perhaps, my tastes have just changed. I also take BHG, but think I'm going to let it go, and you'll think this is crazy - but I hate the cheap, flimsy paper it uses. Silly of me, I know.

Brutuses, I agree with you re: Southern Living. I can't tell you how many times I've not renewed it, only to pick one up and it be filled with great decorating ideas. They lure me back in, every time. They could definitely cut back on the recipes and include more interior decorating ideas....

I think the WORST offender, as far as too many ads go, is Vanity Fair (a little OT, since not a decorating mag.) Almost the first half of the magazine is dedicated to advertising, and that doesn't count the advertising cards that fall out everywhere!

Renovation Style

Yes -- many of the magazines do go through editorial and construction changes -- but I've found that I'm still drawn to them in the stores ..... so for cost considerations -- I do still subscribe to them. Victoria (and I have a full collection of the old ones) has changed -- simply because the original magazine were so costly to produce. I do prefer Southern Accents over Veranda most months!

And yes -- that BHG paper is lousy! LOL! :)

I like Dwell and Metropolitan Home. Also, I like looking at Sunset magazine for style ideas.

In the traditional vein, I like Cottage Living (I think it's more of a "fresh" traditional).

Otherwise, my very favorite decor mags are Domino and a British magazine called Living Etc.

I love Southern Living, but it is not *just* a decorating magazine. I agree, some months there is virtually nothing on decorating. But, they do have some great recipes, and I LOVE their travel articles. True, I live in the south, so maybe I enjoy it more than someone who doesn't.

I find Veranda a bit stuffy. I've not seen Southern accents - I need to look for that one.

I have given up on Cottage Living - used to love it.

I like Victoria, BHG (yes paper is crap!), Romantic Homes, somtimes Country Living, I take Traditional Home, but am a bit disappointed in it. I like many of the quarterly or bi-monthly mags - Windows and Walls, Creative Home, ETc.

Yes, I love decorating magazines (and garden ones LOL). I also like the decorating books - belong to Homestyle book club.

Ok, I know, I know... it's not tradional and it does have a lot of ads, and recipes, but it's "my favorite" so I had to post it.

House Beautiful, Traditional Home. I have issues of House Beautiful and Traditional Home that are ten years old yet I still get ideas from them.

I also like Southern Living, but over the years I've gotten turned off by the ads, travel industry promos, and focus on cooking. I also can't relate to much of the gardening stuff because of the zone difference.

House Beautiful and Traditional Home would be more toward your taste and I love both magazines so much.

In addition to the cottage, shabby chic, romantic and traditional pages of decor, I like it because it is what it says, Romantic Homes.

Behind the Music

Two great love songs in rock 'n' roll history are "Layla" and "Something." Not just chick music, the songs are revered by men living off the fruits of their 401K and boys drumming on the steering wheel as they sneak the car out, learner's permit in the glove compartment. The songs will endure, the verses secured alongside ballads drafted by Tennyson and Browning.

Behind the art there is always a muse. Though she may not be as splashy as a hit song, fronted by singers who some compare to God, she leaves her man spellbound, fueling a virtuoso. The woman I am referring to is Pattie Boyd, the '60s waif who bedazzled and married both George Harrison and Eric Clapton-the inspiration behind their greatest songs. Boyd is commonly considered in her cute-as-a-button British charm. She was the girl on the tour bus spinning around with a tambourine, laughter trailing her like the last echoing note drawn from a guitar. However, the words from those songs are clues to her persona, testimonials that she is not purely ornamental the way a psychedelic decal draws stained glass light into a perky VW bug.

But what transforms a man into the kind of sappy companion who sparks ridicule among his friends? It is not the woman who has the guile of an ambitious common girl, ensnaring a prince during those heady medieval times. It is the woman who has found a man who truly loves her.

In this month honoring romance, we have a tendency toward over-the-top displays of affection. Give us our favorite out-of-season flowers and dinners with a hovering sommelier who anticipates the results of the first sip. Offer us proposals via airplane skywriting. Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to add fragrance to your home, be given a foot massage and eat chocolate bought from a boutique that rubs shoulders with Gucci and Dior. I think the true romantics come in the form of a couple I see each morning at an outdoor cafe near my home. They are momentarily shielded from one another by the drape of a newspaper, sharing tidbits when they read something they know their beloved will find particularly interesting. The man peeks over the paper to smile at his Layla.

American magazines seem to be featuring a lot of the mid-century modern style. I grew up in a mid-century modern house and I love the style, but since I live in a 1907 Victorian, I need to see examples that'll work with the type of house I have. The British magazines feature a lot of older homes (and boy, are some of them OLD).

Ideal Home runs a regular feature where they decorate the same room in 4 different color palettes. Very handy. The magazines also seem to have a lot fewer ads than American magazines... and the Christmas issues are fantastic!

I like Traditional Home and Oregon Home. Oregon Home is a bi-monthly published in Oregon, where I live. It represents a broad spectrum of decorating ideas. And I think even their ads are interesting!

Architectural Digest and Veranda. I LOVE my AD.

AD seems to be the one to which I am most drawn. I just found the first AD that I ever purchased--from 1973! It was then a large size--more of an art mag than a shelter mag. Many of the interiors are just as beautiful today as they were when published. I think if some of these were reprinted in a current issue they would still be sensational--maybe even trendsetting. I also found some older House and Gardens, Southern Accents, and HB from the 80s--they also had some timeless (and some not so timeless) interiors. THe older H and G especially seemed to have some classics. In fact I am looking for a much older H and G--I think from either 1976 or 1977 (maybe 1978) that had Roderick Cameron's garden and home, La Fiorentina--the garden was on the cover and the magazine was then printed in a larger size. If by rare chance anyone has a copy, I would gladly pay for a scan of the article.

Anyone know why the annual subscription rate for Romantic Homes is so expensive ($27)? Why so much more than Country Living for instance, at less than half the price?

Country French Decorating. No ads.

The Country French Decorating magazine is a special issue magazine BHG puts out just ONCE a year in the Fall and you can't subscribe to it. :(

They do a lot of that I notice. Special Issues look like magazines but have a lot more content because they aren't cluttered up with ads and other useless stuff like recipe,etc. They cost more because you're subsidizing the lack of advertising. These "special issues" are more like soft cover books than magazines.

Cottage Style seems to come out about once every other Leap Year. I got tired of waiting for it.
