I posted this on Kitchens because, well, it is my kitchen. But you guys are so supportive and give me such good advice, I thought I would share with you too.

My kitchen won a local contest in a regional magazine. It is in the January edition of the magazine. The good news is that when I finally got my hands on a paper copy, the photos are much crisper on paper than online. (I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure they used very small pictures for the online version). And in the magazine itself my article/photos are two full pages, which is somewhat exciting. I feel like Martyn Lawrence Bullard on the episode when they had their rooms published and he had a double page photo! I'm hoping that this will springboard me into the "next step" which is a design consulting business. I just want one person to reach out to me. Just one... But that is my little fantasy world!

I'll have to come back and look and the Peach and Pear Chili Sauce more carefully later. I'm in the midst of applesauce and apple butter. However, basically that's a tomato-fruit salsa with a good amount of vinegar, so my instinct is it's OK. But as I said, I'll look more closely and find some recipes to compare with in a bit. Or Dave or Linda Lou or someone might feel inclined. The Ball Complete Book is a compilation of all the best from Ball (U.S. Division), Bernardin (Canadian Division) and Kerr (the "other" canning supply company which was subsumed by the bigger corporation). Bernardin Canada follows the same USDA standards as Ball but tends to focus less on the "standards" and offers more ethnic and "gourment" canning formulas. The Ball Complete (Bernardin Complete on the North side of the border) is dual metric and imperial measures. I like metric and find that handy. Keep in mind Ball's main interest is in making money via the jars and other canning supplies they sell. Publishing the Blue Book is a way to promote their product. They aren't trying to cover every possible recipe; it's not in their interest to expend huge sums of money for testing of a lot of esoteric recipes. So each edition gains a few and loses a few. (I don't know who Ball's recipe testers are, but a few of their offerings have been real stinkers taste-wise.) So that fact that a chutney or salsa or pickle or whatever isn't in the BBB doesn't mean there's no safe way to can it. It just means Ball isn't bothering with it. Keep in mind there are also reliable specialists out there. Linda Amendt's preserves are fun, though she's too fond of liquid pectin for my taste. Except for the curds, which I alluded to previously, she offers some great recipes and some very helpful tips and strategies. For sweet preserves there's also Linda Ziedrich (totally reliable) and Madelaine Bullwinkel is A+++ by me. The Jamlady cookbook is also reliable and like a textbook for the art of jams and jellies. Ziedrich's first book was on pickles and provides a wide range of pickling options from traditional fermented to quick pickles, canned, refrigerated and freezer. She has a peach-Pepper Relish to die for. I think it's still posted on some thread or other. Ellie Topp's Small Batch Preserving takes canning in new and interesting directions. Because she is a food scientist, she has the skills to devise recipes just a bit out of the mainstream. So those are some of the options. Gotta go. Carol

We have just installed a 2 man Jetta tub and wanted grab bars for it. Since we used oil rubbed bronze faucets, I had problems finding what I wanted. A local plumbing store was going to order them for me when I found them at Lowe's. I had asked repeatedly and was told they didn't have them in ORB. Well, this is called Venetian Bronze or something like that. It is close enough. It is a Moen product and is ADA approved with a 500 pound pull capacity. They only had the 16 inch one, but I was going to check into a longer one. Thanks for the link above it has them there! We just got this bathroom finished a couple of days ago. Now, granted this tub is not a handicap type one, but we wanted the bars for practical use now and need in the future. The small one is placed vertical on a stud at the edge of the tub. I already know that I want and need one lower. They gutted my other bath this week and the tub/shower is being replaced with a shower that will be handicap accessible--but we are adding glass doors that can be removed later if needed. This shower will have the grab bars and I think we are going to add one beside the toilet in there. Both new toilets are the ADA higher ones and I love the one that is new to master bath. The master bath is large enough to get a wheelchair around in, but the hall bath was very inaccessible. We found this out during the past few years as our parents health failed and we had them here for extended times. We decided to do this bath remodel Christmas when my Dad's health failed to the point that he could not remain at the assisted living. We were going to move him in with us and remodel the bath. However, we lost him in late January. We looked at the overall picture and realized that although we have now lost all four parents, we will have a need for this at some point. So, we went ahead with the plans--just took a little more time doing it. We also have taken out the small hall bath door and they are installing a much wider pocket door so that a wheelchair can go through it. Although I do have solid wood vanities in both baths, we decided to leave them. They will be able to be replaced with a pedestal or something more handicap assessible if needed. I am adding a link to pics of the new master bath. You can see the bar on the right side of the front of tub. Again, it is not a tub that you would think of in this way, but wanted to share the grab bar there. We will add another one. Thanks for your kind words about my abandoned mosaic child :) I *will* get back to her soon, I will, I will :) And oh dear..I sit here at my desk surrounded by my current favorites of my Goodwill-sourced modern art pottery collection, looking at yours...we have very strangely close tastes...I love those splendid little vases and have to restrain myself from buying every one I find, because of my visceral love for glazes and textures :) Those are so dear; I *love* them. Thanks for posting -- maybe I'll photo some of mine and post them so you can see -- not many people appreciate them -- my DH very sweetly tolerates my slight obsessions :) (side note: what's the grouting situation on the plane change of your shelf? Is there grout between the vertical and horizontal tiles? )

Ok now don't misread what I have posted ladies. I don't think white appliances look cheap in all instances. In many they're the only right choice! While I have stainless, I also have black appliances and am probably going to put a white stove (maybe black) in the new kitchen. White does not need to be top of the line designer to work well in a kitchen...it's the sum of the whole (as I like to say). White cabinets with black appliances also looks bad (IMO) as they look like either a cheap afterthought (maybe kept the old stuff) or a bad design choice unless the color is incorporated in other areas of the ktichen well (ie a black and white check floor etc). But black cabinets stand out in a world of their own. When done in an antiqued finish, they're rustic and yet elegant beyond any other cabinet color or style...yummy. And when done on a new cabinet with a tight wood grain, they're sleek and lucious. They're a wonderful design choice that too few pick because they fall too quickly in the "don't want a dark kitchen etc" camp that too many land in and end up with boring kitchens instead. But much like a colored cabinet, red, blue, yellow, if you do go black you need to do it right. The contrast of a black and white for cab and countertop is a great contrast. I'm always taken aback by corian because I owned it, know it was stupid expensive, and resented the cracks, scratches, stains, etc that were on my new corian counters....horrific stuff that costs too much. I don't get people who spend the same amount or close on corian that they would for something like stone or metal or wood (and before you think I'm all stone all the time, I have metal counters and adore them...I'd kill for copper...fabulous stuff, and love my stainless counters). I also have a wonderful formica, but my installer did wonderful edges so that wasn't a worry. I can understand the issue of edge worries if they don't do a good job. And if the only choice was formica with bad edges and seams verses corian...well of course I'd go corian. But as to the appliances...SS is fine, it's timeless, and it works, but in your sleek new kitchen I'd actually consider black far sooner than I'd consider stainless but they are the better choice to white so you don't have stark holes of color in the kitchen (think black hole gone opposite LOL) The stainless will work well if that's what DH wants (cave it's always worth it) :) And don't take any "white is cheap" comment to heart....it's not, it just has it's place as does any other material used in the decorating and design world. In your case, it could damage the look of your fabulous cabinets...that's all I'm saying. I'm sorry I wasn't tactful enough. It's been a long week and sometimes I'm too short. I was taken aback because of the high (normally) cost of corian and generally just don't get the choice. This is because I've had two corian counters in the past and they didn't preform. In addition, most people who put it in at full price expect top dollar when they're selling their home because they put in corian, but it's such a ummm gad how to say...specialty finish, that it's very hard to place someone in a corporate condo when it's in, so we always rip it out asap and put in anything else. No not just stone :oP Actually in your kitchen, if you want white appliances really badly, I'd go with builder grade black and white granite which is amazingly cheap (less than formica) and has a fabulous color sequence in it that would pull your black cabinets into the design with white cabinets and make the whole thing flow wonderfully. or go with a wonderful black and white glass tile backsplash in a checkerboard pattern to pull them together...it would be yummy, yummy yummy! Again I'm sorry...on a personal note, I've been blessed with the special needs challenge myself and don't want you to have to resort to calming medication though many times they'r so tempting heh heh :) But do enjoy something stronger than green tea while you're working on this kitchen....you'll need it! MsMarve...LOL I actually almosted called mom and asked if she'd changed her screen name.

BKW, just amazing!!!!! I was thinking today how much I love the online world because it has been a wonderful way to be exposed to new and beautiful ideas, and your kitchen is a perfect example.

Amazing! I did see this on kitchens, and followed the link there. I wanted to ask, is this the kitchen with the arabesque backsplash tiles that you won? Or is it the kitchen in your new house? In any case, it is absolutely wonderful and beautiful!

anitamo--the steam oven and the speed/microwave oven are in the island. They are Mieles.

funkyart, since you are in the area, that would be great. You never know who has a friend who has a friend.... I would love to work with someone who is building a new house. A lot of people make the comment that they can tell the whole house was "thought out" because there is a certain style that runs through it. I know a lot of people that build new homes strive to do that. Some, not so successfully. I tend to blame the "designers" in the builders' offices for that. I basically told the woman who wanted me to choose her selections to back off. So, please share away.

demeron, are you here now? Or did you grow up here?

cooperbailey-this is the new kitchen. It also has the arabesques! I wanted to use something else but this is the tile I had in my mind when I designed the space. So, no matter what I brought home, it just wasn't the same. This time we used unsanded grout because the tiles were manufactured a little more uniformly which allowed us to do a tighter grout line. The unsanded grout allowed me to really do a thin grout line and the tile's bevel is even more evident.

I am going to try to pick up a copy of Susquehanna Style this afternoon-- hope I am not too late. Maybe I can even have some fun with it.. if my mom sees the cover, she'll start family rumors! lol

I saw on your blog or houzz or somewhere (yes, I "creeped" your web spaces) that you've used BM Wasabi in one of your rooms. Would you use it again? I am so taken by the photos I've seen -- I am going to sample it on a wall of my kitchen.. and am considering it for the too. Any raves or rants for wasabi?

Love Wasabi. I may be using it again, trying to figure out where. I need something strong in my study to balance the dining room which is on the other side of the foyer. I'm not sure if the Wasabi can do that. But I know the furniture will work with it.

I don't know how large your foyer is but I'd think the wasabi and velvet cloak would look great on either side.

I was in one of the Andrew Drogaris properties in Lancaster a few weeks ago. It was a below ground level open office space with a purple and green color scheme. I didn't care for the green (way too light and minty) but the purple concrete brick conference room was stunning. Like him as a business man or not, he has some stunning properties (I've worked in two of them).

Anyhow, back to your colors-- as I am sure you know, BM has wasabi paired with vintage wine in many of their showcase photos. I know velvet cloak is darker but I do think it would be a gorgeous combo. I won't be using them near each other but I hope to make both colors (or something close to them) work in different areas of my house.

Oh my goodness, thank you everybody. I hadn't even seen that this popped back up. Thanks for the "Likes" on the FB page. I am just happy that I haven't deleted it yet!

Funky, I love the way the green looks in my dining room with the dark Velvet Cloak walls (I have some green glasses and tablecloth, etc) But I'm more concerned if it will look "Light and airy" to the left and "dark and mysterious" to the right when one enters. I need to get a sample board up and get busy!

Homeblessings--It is Super White. As we have recently learned it is actually NOT a quartzite, but it is a marble. (Learned that from the resident geologist on the Kitchens forum, she did some testing)
