Calling Linda C. or anyone with french porcelain knowledge!

Linda, could you tell me if you know anything about "Yarbrough" french porcelain. I am not spelling it right, I do know that much and that's the only thing I know.

However, I am suppose to go look at this persons antiques tomorrow and I don't know a thing about that porcelain. He wants me to appraise some of his things. I told him I had never heard of Yarbrough. If I just had the spelling right I could google it.

I know a little to get me by when it comes to Staffordshire fiqurines and S.plates and Old Paris and White Ironstone and a little about Chelsea ware.

If anyone could help me I could really use it ASAP.

His wife passed away and had collected french antiques, dishes and furniture for over thirty years. So, I need to direct him to a antique auction or The Good Will, depending.

I know, I know, I should have done my home work before the eleventh hour but I wasn't really sure if he was serious. As it turns out he is dead serious and I could be embarrassed to say the least.

Could he have said Lladro? Not French, I know. It is porcelain, though, and if you say it out loud it sounds pretty darn close.

Oh, Woodsy you may be right it does sound like Yarbrough if you say it fast.

This is atrocious, don't you think? It reminds me of Precious Moments, gads. Now I'm wondering what the so called french furniture looks like. I pictured gorgeous chandys and gold leaf clouded mirrors, very old and straight from Paris. Oh well, maybe I will be surprized and the furniture will be drop dead, but that is doubtful.

This is really not antique but more of a collecter item. According to the internet the company started in 1953.

Woodsy, you are a doll for taking the time and looking this up for me. I love this site.

They sort of look 30-ish to me too. But I can't see the whole shape of the pieces well enough to tell. Is that a sleigh bed? Is there a mirror on the dresser? Dovetailing? What does the back look like? Can you get a clear picture of the wood and that beading? It looks like either burl walnut trim on flame maple or maple veneer on walnut...hard to tell from the pictures. Is there a maker's mark anywhere? What do the insides of the top drawers look like? Can you see by looking at that chip on the drawer front if it's veneered or not? Gotta learn to be a detective sometimes! LOL! Pretty set at any rate! Linda C

Sally, Grandma always told me to pat the bread dough into a rectangle, then roll it up tightly and tuck the ends under. If I do that, I don't get an empty space in the loaf, at least not one that's related to shaping the loaf. Yeah, yeah, I know, Grandma was right. She was ALWAYS right, I just have to learn the hard way sometimes. I agree with Teresa, ciabatta is SUPPOSED to have holes. Listen to her, she's taught bread baking classes and done enough recipe testing for companies that I consider her the resident bread expert. I sometimes get a hole in the bread if I'm not careful while shaping it to go into the pan, but I usually get a big ole' honking hole if I've overproofed, letting the dough rise too long. It's still better, though, than when I overproof and then it falls, giving me a dense loaf of breadcrumb material. Anyway, may, here's the information from Baking 911, I don't know if you just had a big hole, or if the top crust separated from the loaf, giving you that hole. Causes for either: Top crust separates from the rest of the bread. This can have a number of causes. The most likely is a poorly formed loaf, allowing oven heat to cause instant aeration when put in the oven. Look at alternate loaf forming techniques. Over-proofing can cause this, so don't let the bread rise quite so long in the future. Too stiff dough, insufficient rising time, or the dough drying out and forming a crust during rising. This can also happen if you freeze the bread to store it for a while. Large holes in your bread Dough could have been over-kneaded or the dough rose too long. This is an advantage with certain free-form loaves, particularly French or Italian loaves, but with other breads an even crumb is one of the attributes of good baking. All this is really a matter of taste though, so if you want a strong bread with big holes and a chewy crust, give the dough lots of kneading and a long, slow rise Â even two risings. Annie

I have had an LG french door since 2006 and just love it. I have had no problems. Love the bottom freezer drawer although the ice maker is a bit out of the way, doesn't bother me, guests seem to have problem finding it though. LOL I love the pull out shelves and the big shelf/drawer in the fridge part. I really like not having to bend over to get stuff out of my fridge. I did not get the ice/water in the door, personal choice. My DD just bought a Samsung french door with ice/water in door and she loves it. Sue, I don't have a problem with the door storage. The doors hold a lot of stuff, even gallon size jugs of milk. The alarm on the doors can be annoying when putting up stuff or cleaning, but I really wish I had had that feature when the children were home. Lost a bunch of freezer stuff once because the door didn't get shut properly....another tale for another time. :) Just my two cents worth.... Murphy

Thanks you all I knew the bread baking gurus here would help find the answer. The recipe I am using is almost exactly like Anns except no potato. So how big of a potato do I use? I have read and reread Tricias tutorial in the FAQ so many times I have most of it memorized. I think I have the basics down and am getting a good loaf of bread almost every time. DH would eat hamburgers every night if he had his way. The problem is I cant get good H buns here in the valley so I have to buy them in Bakersfield and freeze them. Not only do they take up to much space in the freezer they have just about tripled in price and they arent that great to begin with. Terri the whole wheat recipe sounds good. Ill give it a try next week as soon as my hand rests a bit. All the bread making is hurting my right hand for some reason. I have a Zo mini on my wish list at Amazon and think its time to place the order. I think it should be big enough for the 2 of us and I dont plan to bake in it just let it do the hard work for me. Lladro became famous for the very fine and expensive porcelain like venus and cupid and the horses. It was later that smaller pieces were made for tourists.

If the wife was a serious collector, she could have some very fine pieces worth in the tens of thousands of dollars per piece.

Check ebay and you will see many pieces for thousands of dollars each.

Definitely not precious moments.

Like I told Woodsey, I can't thank you enough for all of your help and your knowledge.

This should be interesting tomorrow and I wish I would of asked questions before this.

Newdawn, I'm happy to help. I interned with a designer who mispronounced things all of the time, so I got pretty good at deciphering her words.

Do appraisers give on-the-spot determinations of value? Perhaps you can take your digital camera, notebooks, and tell him that you need to do further research. Seems reasonable.
