anyone besides schoolhouse have a wooden walls or beadboard?

Hubby put wooden bead board, ...well 1 by 4 inch or so tongue and grooved pine anyway... on the vaulted kitchen/ LR ceiling. several years ago. we just "oiled" it. Looks good. Since this is a lake house.

Since the dry wall has never been installed. He did the hardwood floors first. He did not want dry wall dust everywhere.... I kind of told him it would look too "woody and dated"

But I reconsidered . I think it would look good if the bead board walls were painted.

Hubby said a house down the road has wood walls with diagonal pattern up high then vertical boards...

The cabinets are painted "lake colored green" the ones that are finished anyway

Pictures would be helpful..

Our farmhouse used to belong to DH's grandparents and we purchased it a couple of years ago from his aunt. The walls and ceilings in the entire house were pine beadboard which had already been painted (beadboard on walls is laid horizontally, not vertically). We have added an addition on and have tried mimicking with beadboard paneling on the walls and beadboard wallpaper on the ceilings and are happy with how it has turned out. Not sure if this is what you are asking about but here is one picture of part of the new kitchen addition:

I have a gas range and need a fireproof surface... and I'm mulling over backsplash options too. Read the installation specs for your stove -- they may vary. The following is from a GE electric slide-in range manual: 30" ranges conform to U.L. requirements for 0" spacing from vertical walls below countertops. Allow 1/4" minimum clearance at the back wall above the countertop. Wall coverings, counters and cabinets around range must withstand heat (up to 194Â°F) generated by the range. So at least for the particular stove I checked, you'd be OK. Beadboard looks great, and the price is right. Amcofar, how long has your beadboard been in place? Do you have any pics?

... and don't forget fancy! lol I agree about the blue. I went to Anthropologie today to look at some of those little accessories (jars, sugar bowl, etc) in yellow and aqua and brought the blue bird fabric. Most of them worked well but some of them were too green. It's a pretty blue. I don't think I'll do any other fabrics with turquoise- just if I find a good blue like the birds. It's sooo cute. I love it! My mom loves it too and agrees these work better than the original yellow/black/grey ones. Other ones I showed her she said were too french/formal. She has a good eye for decorating : ) The little bird fabric might be busy for the 6' window but that's why I thought maybe for the lights and then white with a bit of yellow (maybe the pom poms) for the window. I get the dandelions tomorrow (fabric) in the turquoise and girly blue. I think the print is too large though compared to those cute little birds. Maybe in the DR though if I do pillows. We'll see! I liked the tile even more today. They gave me 4 to take home woo-hoo!

Hi Susan. I can't tell you much about the wall treatment in my kitchen as it was already here when we bought the house. My husband has used a lot of pine tongue and groove in his previous house and it looks the same except it comes in 3 inch wide pieces instead of panels. He likes it for ease of working with (compared to plasterboard) and because it makes a nice solid surface for hanging things (you don't have to make sure you put hangers into a stud or use one of those special things to put screws into plaster). It can be used unfinished, with just a simple sealer, or can be painted like in my kitchen. He also thought it would work just fine on the ceiling. Thanks for the compliment on the shelves and antiques (yup, those are antiques alright). We both love antiques and spend a lot of time searching rummage sales and shops for them. Unfortunately, we tend to haul home more then we can fit in. At least we're bargain hunters so aren't spending tons of money on them :-)

Like someone up thread we have beadboard wainscot outside our primary bathroom. It is small, and the vent fan is not ideal with a few kinks along the run. We get a little mildew on our ceiling every couple of years, our tiles get a little mildewy if I don't keep up on the tilex. With that said, our beadboard that we painted with a gloss exterior paint looks just fine! No mildew, no rot. We even had an area where it swelled a little bit before we had the shower glass door up, and that has stayed fine since it stopped getting pelted with water. We didn't use any fancy product, it was the ready to assemble strips from menards. they were some kind of engineered material, but not anything special water resistant composite.

Personally I would LOVE to have beadboard walls. I only one little stretch of them part of my kitchen. They have so much more character than drywall. I can imagine them painted or stained or perhaps a pickled type finish...as if they were old and bleached out..depending on architecture and decorating style of your house.

Farmhousebound, I have to show those pictures to my husband. We are thining about putting beadboard in our alcove that the buffet sits in (it sort of makes the buffet look like a built in hutch). If we run the beadboard horizontally, it takes care of the problem of how to attache it as it's now spanning the studs.

DH is very visual, without pictures I'm sure he'd say "that will look bad". I plan on putting open shelves above the buffet too

Farmhouse- I love your kitchen! It looks like all farmhouse kitchens should...and your baking area is wonderful! I can imagine that you're able to create lovely breads, desserts, etc. in such a great space! :)

When we bought our house, our upstairs sunroom had tongue and groove knotty pine, which I hated. Originally I planned to rip it out, but instead we decided to prime it and paint it white. Now I absolutely LOVE it.

We have one whole wall that is T&G beadboard painted in white semigloss, and the ceiling is clad in it as well.

We have a bathroom with tongue and groove beadboard which we painted after it was installed. I love the look. The only problem is, that when the weather changes it expands and contracts. Since we painted the boards after they were installed, there are "cracks" in the paint between the boards. I have scrapped them and repainted twice, but the only way to fix this is to take them down, paint them again and then put them back up. It doesn't look terrible, it is just something to think about before you paint.
