Anyone had a bone biopsy done?

They found a growth on my knee. Can anyone tell me what the procedure is? Does it hurt? They said I won't be knocked out and I can still drive back and forth. They said it will be done in the office as an out patient procedure.

I have had a needle biopsy done in my breast. Turned out to be just a cyst. But how do you biopsy a bone? The nurse was suppose to call me back with information. I hate to keep bugging them.

I haven't had this done, but I want to tell you, bug em! That's what they're there for and it is not for you to worry about it if they are busy. If she said she'd call you with the info and hasn't yet, go ahead and call again. If you want to give a reason for calling, you can tell her you're nervous about this (tho I'm sure it will be fine-- I too have had three breast biopsies that were fine,) as I think they do understand that these kinds of procedures make us nervous. Btw, could it have anything to do with that bad spill you took a couple of months ago? My memory is not always reliable, so I'm sorry if I've got the wrong person! Good luck, and again, don't be afraid to ask for and expect to receive information.

sjerin - yes it has to do with the fall in Jan. I went to have my bad bruise on my breast looked at and told my DR how my knee just gave way. I then went for xrays, which showed something. So then they scheduled a bone scan with injection of radioactive tracers. Again it showed something but they aren't sure what. So now we are at the biopsy stage. Like I told the technician, I'm not worried until there is something to be worried about.

Well..I can say, I have crafted with bones for many years. Must be the Native American in me. When I lived out in the country, and my son's and i would go fishing, I would come to a screeching halt when I saw a clean carcass. When my son's were old enough to drive, and they would see me look back along the road when they were driving..they knew right away to turn around, and 'let mom do what she does'...LOL People who knew what id did would bring me bobcats, armadillo's, cow skulls and most any type of bone. I would use the bobcat skins, ( scraping them and tanning them with salt) I have used deer legs as table legs and gun racks, I made a skeleton for halloween using animal bones. Skulls and Jaw bones I usually painted Native American scenes on them. I would have no problem building a garden trellis or windchimes from bones. I have seen people save the wishbones from turkeys and such, spray paint them gold and tie them to gift boxes for luck. I say, to each their own. My dad used to always tell us when he was young, they used the turkey breast bones for ice skates..LOL ( I never know when to believe what he says..LOL)...and you bet..I would have stopped and picked those bones up ;) Loved your story..LOL

I had my thyroid removed about a year ago due to multiple nodules. There was no malignancy, I'm grateful to say, and the surgery was the easiest thing I could imagine. I was in hospital just overnight....little or no pain and a clean very thin scar. The meds are a little tricky sometimes, at one time, I lost almost 30 pounds (yippee)but also my nails got really funky and my hair thinned. When the doctor adjusted the dosage, I found the 30 pounds and my nails and hair improved. He keeps a close check on my numbers and adjusts the meds accordingly. Don't fear the surgery, it's a piece of cake.

Wow! This has by far been the most 'popular' thread of the ones I've started! Kind of ironic isn't it? Thank you all for your support. I've read each and every one of your comments. My doctor's first opinion based on biopsy results is that it is not operable at this stage. In the next few days I will probably know if there's anything that can be done to really help my medical condition and prolong my life while keeping quality of life decent or if there's not much hope due to metastasis. My father died of lung cancer with bone metastasis at the age of 65 and that was a more than nasty experience both for him and for us. I don't intend to let myself be subjected to this or impose this on my loved ones. For some reason I always thought that 65 was my life limit too but it seems I may have miscalculated. What I would ask from you at the moment is to PLEASE let this thread slip down the houzz thread list, so I can calmly continue browsing these rosy pages when I feel like it.. I just wanted to give a little update - yesterday was the day dh had the stem cell collected. He started the shots last Thursday and was fine Thursday and Friday. By Saturday he was starting to feel sore, and by Sunday, his back was bothering him, but he never complained and insisted on attending to all our family obligations as we had multiple sports games on Sunday. MIL flew in on Saturday night, and then late on Sunday, they went to the hospital afflicted with Georgetown. The next morning, they were picked up, along with another young woman and her MIL, and taken to the hospital for the procedure. It was about an 8 hr process. All in all, he said it wasn't that bad, uncomfortable but not painful. He wasn't really able to move his arms/hands due to the IVs, etc. so he couldn't read or use an iPad; he couldn't hold it and there was no way to prop it. He ended up watching TV and sleeping. They collected 24ml of stem cells which were then taken to the airport to be flown to wherever this young girl is located. We pray that all goes well on her end! After he was done, he and MIL took an Uber to my son's high school lacrosse game. I couldn't believe he insisted on coming. We live about an hour from Georgetown so I figured he'd just want to get home and relax. He was exhausted and sore (he was moving like he was in a little pain). He felt pretty lucky with his experience though. The young woman he was undergoing the procedure with him had some awful side effects. She was nauseated, throwing up and dehydrated. MIL said she looked awful and felt so bad for her. She was also donating for a stranger and had flown in from St. Louis. All in all it was an amazing experience for our family and we are so proud of dh for this selfless act. I must admit that I was a little nervous b/c his BP was higher than normal for him and with possible complications being heart attack or stroke, this did concern me. Thankfully, he was fine. Now we hope and pray that it will save this young girl's life! thanks for all of your words of support and advice from those with experience.

Glad to hear you're not worried, Aptos. Those knees can be a little tricky when there is an injury. Hopefully you "just" have water on the knee or a blood clot and they will be able to easily treat it. Does it still hurt? I'm sorry you're having to go through this, but on a side note, ain't it a beeeautiful day???

I had a bone marrow biopsy done last August and it was not a bad experience. There was no sedation, but I was given a pain killer injection at the site (left buttock area), then a short wait, then another injection deeper to the bone. Then, the bone marrow extractor was used and I felt absolutely no pain but could feel pressure....like at the dentist's when your tooth is deadened but you can feel the pressure of the procedure.
Mine was also done at the office. It took about 15 minutes, but all totaled I was in the front door and back out to my car in less than an hour.
I think you'll be fine with your biopsy. It's all in the technique of the doctor, of course.
