Anyone had a bone biopsy done?

They found a growth on my knee. Can anyone tell me what the procedure is? Does it hurt? They said I won't be knocked out and I can still drive back and forth. They said it will be done in the office as an out patient procedure.

I have had a needle biopsy done in my breast. Turned out to be just a cyst. But how do you biopsy a bone? The nurse was suppose to call me back with information. I hate to keep bugging them.

I haven't had this done, but I want to tell you, bug em! That's what they're there for and it is not for you to worry about it if they are busy. If she said she'd call you with the info and hasn't yet, go ahead and call again. If you want to give a reason for calling, you can tell her you're nervous about this (tho I'm sure it will be fine-- I too have had three breast biopsies that were fine,) as I think they do understand that these kinds of procedures make us nervous. Btw, could it have anything to do with that bad spill you took a couple of months ago? My memory is not always reliable, so I'm sorry if I've got the wrong person! Good luck, and again, don't be afraid to ask for and expect to receive information.

sjerin - yes it has to do with the fall in Jan. I went to have my bad bruise on my breast looked at and told my DR how my knee just gave way. I then went for xrays, which showed something. So then they scheduled a bone scan with injection of radioactive tracers. Again it showed something but they aren't sure what. So now we are at the biopsy stage. Like I told the technician, I'm not worried until there is something to be worried about.

I'm due to have a port done next week. I'm 77, bony as heck, so I'm wondering if they'll find enough fat in which to place the port! A terrible thing happened to me. In 2009 I went to the hospital with possible pneumonia. They found spot on my right lung. The doctor did a Cat Scan, Pet Scan and Biopsy...told me I didn't have cancer. In 2011, went to my doctor for a pain in my left arm...she did an x-ray, told me the spot had gotten bigger - sent me back to the Pulmonary Office. The doctor who had told me I DIDN't have cancer had since died. The new doctor argued that I had had cancer the first time and said the Doctor (who had died) had it in his notes. My two daughters were with me when he said I didn't have cancer - we all hugged and were delighted. The "dead doctor" had put in his notes I refused to come back! He asked if I wanted to come back. I answered "not if I don't have to." He merely said if anything changes, let him know. I was stunned out of my mind when the 2nd doctor told me the place had gone from quarter size to cue-ball size. I feel that dead doctor took two years out of my life - something might have been done in Stage One or Two...now I'm in Stage IV! Does anyone think I have a medical malpractice case?

I had my thyroid removed about a year ago due to multiple nodules. There was no malignancy, I'm grateful to say, and the surgery was the easiest thing I could imagine. I was in hospital just overnight....little or no pain and a clean very thin scar. The meds are a little tricky sometimes, at one time, I lost almost 30 pounds (yippee)but also my nails got really funky and my hair thinned. When the doctor adjusted the dosage, I found the 30 pounds and my nails and hair improved. He keeps a close check on my numbers and adjusts the meds accordingly. Don't fear the surgery, it's a piece of cake.

My cancer was thankfully Stage 0, BUT! - it was grade 3 necrosis, the fastest growing type there is, therefore, had I not gotten a mammo that year, by the next year I would have been in huge trouble! chisue said: "Yes, people die of cancers, but people with what histories, and at what ages?" Research the status on very young women (in their 30's OR younger!) who have been diagnosed with breast cancer - AND - have never had breast cancer in their family history! The onset of BC younger than 40 yrs. old is generally not without - a much higher Stage cancer at diagnosis 2. higher rates of the cancer reoccurring I'm not sure why you're attempting to discourage very simple screening for something that hundreds of thousands of women die from each year. The progress of women's health care has come too far for such nonsense. JoAnne - I'm sorry they didn't test you yet but stay strong and know that you're definitely doing the right thing by keeping this in check! Please keep us posted.

Wow! This has by far been the most 'popular' thread of the ones I've started! Kind of ironic isn't it? Thank you all for your support. I've read each and every one of your comments. My doctor's first opinion based on biopsy results is that it is not operable at this stage. In the next few days I will probably know if there's anything that can be done to really help my medical condition and prolong my life while keeping quality of life decent or if there's not much hope due to metastasis. My father died of lung cancer with bone metastasis at the age of 65 and that was a more than nasty experience both for him and for us. I don't intend to let myself be subjected to this or impose this on my loved ones. For some reason I always thought that 65 was my life limit too but it seems I may have miscalculated. What I would ask from you at the moment is to PLEASE let this thread slip down the houzz thread list, so I can calmly continue browsing these rosy pages when I feel like it.. Glad to hear you're not worried, Aptos. Those knees can be a little tricky when there is an injury. Hopefully you "just" have water on the knee or a blood clot and they will be able to easily treat it. Does it still hurt? I'm sorry you're having to go through this, but on a side note, ain't it a beeeautiful day???

I had a bone marrow biopsy done last August and it was not a bad experience. There was no sedation, but I was given a pain killer injection at the site (left buttock area), then a short wait, then another injection deeper to the bone. Then, the bone marrow extractor was used and I felt absolutely no pain but could feel pressure....like at the dentist's when your tooth is deadened but you can feel the pressure of the procedure.
Mine was also done at the office. It took about 15 minutes, but all totaled I was in the front door and back out to my car in less than an hour.
I think you'll be fine with your biopsy. It's all in the technique of the doctor, of course.

Leslie - Thanks for the information. I appreciate it. Just a little nervous because never had something like this done before. Glad to know it doesn't hurt and I will be able to drive to and from.
