Getting Ready For Winter?

I live in Minnesota and went out riding on Sunday. The air temp was 52 degrees. I think it is getting to be time to put it away for the season. Anyone else still holding out for a warm day or two (that lives in the cold like I do)?

I live in Michigan and usually have my bike put away by November 1st. I went on a short ride this past Sunday, as well.

I'm probably going to winterize my bike this weekend.

That should be a sign for all of you that 80 degree temps are on the way.

I moved back to SW Florida about a year ago, so I ride all year...please don't hate me...LOL

However....I lived for a few years in SE PA...I still rode in the winter...the cut-off temp for me was around 37 or so....I just layered, beginning with silk long johns, for warmth.
Of course...even if it was warmer, I never rode after a snow...it's way too risky...ya never know what road conditions lie around the bend, so-to-speak.
It only takes one small patch of asphalt that hasn't been exposed to sun to create a catastrophe.

Your winter in Alabama is so different from points north. That rose doesn't really know that winter's coming, in fact, it has slowed down, but is still growing and probably won't go dormant at all. Don't cut it back now. That would just make it put out new growth the first three day sunny spell you'll have. By February, the rose will have started its 2011 growth. In zone 7a your rose will probably start putting out new growth in early to late January, depending on weather in late December. Watch for the swelling of the new buds (the ones at the base of the leaves that will probably be hanging on. You want to dig it just when those buds start. Then keep it in a cool dry and dark place with a slight bit of moisture. Not wet, moist. That way you're extending its version of winter dormancy, and it will be ready to replant in February.

yes, OG - you're right. the pink hydrangea vine - schizophragma. it's supposed to be good in shade - I really know very little about it other than that it should get to be about 50 feet long in partial shade - and, I'm hoping that after a winter indoors I can put it outdoors at my friend's campsite (which is very woodsy, beside a river). It feels to late in the year to transplant it outside now. So, my fingers are crossed that it will survive my less lit -west facing windows for the winter season. I'm looking forward to seeing what will come of the mandevilla! such pretty flowers. Not much in the way of scent - but I am appreciative of receiving a tiny plant in bloom. To the extent that I removed the fan from a window just so that the mandevilla could have it's own sunny spot. I hesitate to say this - but, I am thinking that New England has seen the last 'truly' hot days for the year.

Thanks hosta gardeners. From your suggestions, and my own ideas, I have compiled a to do list. Winter prep for hosta gardens 1. Take pictures of hosta gardens for reference and winter planning. 2. Cut back hosta to about 6-8 inches. Leaving that much to catch leaves and snow to act as a winter mulch. Otherwise, I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t give winter protection to my hosta. 3. Mark hosta crowns with stakes. My husband, I notice, has a pile of wooden garden stakes he made, probably from scrap. I am going to use them this year as my plant labels arenÃ¯Â¿Â½t ready, (winter project?) 2. Store container hosta for winter. Some I will sink into my vegetable patch as I did last two winters, and some I will use the hosta forum tip method (I decided to name it such without permission and apologize to any forum members who disagree): store sideways and the north side of my house under the eaves so they will stay frozen and dry all winter. 3. Take notes. From what needs to be moved next spring to where I think I could squeeze in a few more hosta. Also which annuals worked best as hosta companions. Many of my hosta are still immature and I like to fill with annuals and groundcovers. 4. Water thouroughly one last time. It has been dry and windy here and the soil doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t freeze until late November or December. We have had it better than some, but have had to water. If it doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t rain this week, I will water one last time. After October 15th, no more. 5. Make a large pot of chili, buy some Spanish red wine, make a fire and enjoy the last of the garden,. This was my first year with SFG and I found I had to use some blood meal for nitrogen. My mixed compost was more leaf and mushroom than cow manure. So I am putting 'composted' cow manure from the store on top of my gardens to further decompose during the winter, so it will be ready to work in next spring. I harvested some lettuce this week.

Oh yeah...I forgot all about the leaves!

Our big riding day when we lived up North was New Year's Day...it became a tradition for us...wouldn't go far in the freezing cold, tho...LOL

When we lived in NH we always had our traditional Christmas Day Ride, even if it was just down to the next driveway. Now we live in FL and have the please of riding all year. I'm still wearing shorts and sandals LOL I just hate the thought of putting on "winter clothes".

I see that your post is from last year. I rode my TGB 50cc all last winter here in MN with no problems. At least within Minneapolis, there is so much salt on the streets that they are dry all winter.

I just recommend a really good down jacket. The Sub Zero or Absolute Zero are both good options. A balaclava is good and nice thick boots and socks are good too.
