We're FINAL!!!!

OK, you are absolutely the only humans on the planet who could give a fraction of a penny of care about our stupid house. So I have to bore you with this: We Passed Final Inspection Today!!!!! I am SO excited about this. It's not the case that we're done by any means, but I've been so worried the city will start hounding us for more inspection fees and on and on ... so worried about what we'll get caught out for, etc. (We're more or less trying to be good citizens but I think it would take about 4 seconds of looking to find something wrong here or anywhere else for that matter. There are so many rules, so many ways to screw up).

The inspector who showed up was the penultimate one and he was such a mean-man last time around. When I saw his outline at the door today I almost decided to play possum and ignore his ring ("I wanted the *other* inspector please...."). But of course I met my fate, swung open the door and proceeded to be shocked. Our "visit" was less than 12 minutes long, and his response was "I looked at that last time, right? What were you needing me to look at? You don't remember? Neither do I..." etc etc. He couldn't fall over himself to be more benign (whatever that means).

I think last time he was new; 1.5 years later he's not. ;)

So ... now if we only had some money left we can do what we *really* want to do!

Woohoo, S!!!! Good for you! Our permit is coming up on two years old and we still don't have our final pass. In my town, there are two inspectors. When I call or schedule an inspection online, I always ask for Ryan, the good one. And they let me!!!

You have a great functioning kitchen. That, at least, must make you feel good! Other things can be done with time...

P.S. I hope you saw my answers to your questions about my wood counter on my other thread. It took me a couple days to get to it.

Thanks, W!!! Yup, I do feel great about the kitchen. I still have to seal the stone again and get a light bulb for the overhead lamp and take some pictures ... not to mention fix the walls. But it's pretty much done-ish. I owe you-all a real reveal.

Here's a mark of the function and value of the kitchen. My 20-something niece and a couple of her friends came some very long distance to hang out here; they made food in the kitchen. And one of them said to me (and she's a chef) how much she loves it, how homey it feels, how much she likes to hang out here.

Life doesn't actually really get any better than this. Thank you GW.

I will continue by building one small compost pile this year. Mostly, the material will come from one of my neighbors who makes this strange commitment to compost each year. He has tons of what he calls compost! It is almost entirely lawn clippings and pine needles. Appropriate choices but he does no more than pile them up. In fact, he invites a landscaper guy to dump lawn clippings in his yard where nothing is likely to be done with them for a number of years. They aren't even mixed into the pine needles which might even be left in plastic bags and tossed into the pile - I kid you not! Anyway he is always pushing this "miracle material" (which is obviously in his way) and I'm willing to haul off several wheelbarrow loads. Remarkably, he has now tilled his garden and it does not appear that he will make use of a single fork-full of his own "compost" this spring! At the rate he is utilizing this material, I figure that he will have some of what is already piled up over there into the next decade! What I carry off will be used to mulch the potato beds after allowing it another 12 months of composting. I don't add anything but soil but it gets good and fluffed up. Just doing this seems to take care of the bindweed seed that must be in it - yes, bindweed is robustly growing over some of the neighbor's bins! My own compostables will continue to be buried under 8" or 10" of soil directly in the garden beds as they become available. I realized the other day that the nature of the soil here may be a primary reason why this seems to work so well for me. Decomposition must be at least partly an anaerobic process when I do this. However, my garden soil has a great deal of gravel in it. In my imagination at least, around each rock is trapped some air. Layering clay over compostables may not be entirely successful but in my garden, all of the material will decay away uneventfully while doing a good deal to improve soil tilth and fertility. Steve

rufinorox- They are actually Whirlpool appliances! I would have preferred Kitchen Aid or Frigidaire, but the builder (it's a new build) doesn't offer. Thanks! jsweenc- I figured out that I am fine choosing as things go along. Choosing floors, having those down, choosing what comes next, having that in.... But all at once on small samples kicked my butt!!! But, we're happy! Thanks!

What a wonderful playful looking space! Great green accents. I like how the added lights in the curved ceiling section really plays up the architectural lines. Really makes it a standout feature. Love all the drawers, the backsplash (of course!) and the improved layout. Thanks for sharing your LED color temperature solution. That drives me crazy too when they're not the same. It has been difficult to find the more neutral color temps (forget the exact kelvin temp at the moment), so your solution sounds great! I saw this really cool Lutron dimmer that reminds me of your space and would look really cool if it could work with your Insteon (I'm not familiar with this) dimming system, or if not, maybe something separate. In a single or a double switch plate, there is a thin vertical slot that has Green LEDs (also comes in Blue or White) that you can touch anywhere for the dimmer (all the way up is full On and any position lower is dimmed by seven levels I believe). And there is a small Amber light at the lowest point that softly glows when it is all off so you can find it in the dark. The wall plates are available in the 10 standard colors and 11 brushed metal colors so you could get a brushed aluminum or stainless steel looking one to match what looks like what you have (see the picture below). I'm going to use these in my bar in the Blue to coordinate with the granite countertops there, so just thought these would look cool in the Green for your great space. This is one of the most distinctive dimmers I have seen. The picture below is of the single in the Green with an aluminum plate (also comes in a double plate as well) and a link with the specifics. Nice sorry about your niece's visit. Heck, I just think its great she came so far to hang out with you. That says a lot about her auntie. :) It's funny you mention her comments though as I was just whining to myself last night that people don't have much to say about my kitchen IRL when they see it. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing more pics!

Congrats on the final inspection!!! I was just thinking recently we were probably ready for the plumbing inspection. Still need to figure out what we want in place for electrical outlets on the island (for the electrical inspection). Then, actually, we may try to hold off on the final... because I know our taxes are going to go up (major house remodel, not just kitchen).

We went through that in August, so I can COMPLETELY apprieciate the feeling of getting that final signature on the posted paper! Congrats! Now time for celebrating and pictures, please :)

Boy, mention of the inspection made me tighten up myself three years later (deep breath, let it out slowly).

Taxes. Our fair city had us down for completed about 12 months ago. Plus, they tacked on an additional bedroom and bath. I called up and spoke with a skeptical assessor until she heard we were slogging through big puddles of goo (this was last year when it rained) to get inside the house which had no heat, cooking on a 2-burner camp stove underneath a tarp outside, using a hot pot for instant oatmeal... that's when I heard the great line: "how can you be having trouble getting work completed, aren't we having a recession out there"?

sigh.

She ended up a great ally and set our end-date for February ... which even happened! That's some of the reason I'm so excited; feels terribly moral of me. And goody, now our taxes will triple. While monies to the school is decimated -- yet again. Sort of a Xeno's arrow type situation -- they keep decimating the decimation, yet drawing from the top .... but I digress.

Angie: LOL, "nag-o-gram" indeed. Our inspector said he signed off on a 20 year old permit that morning so ... you've a while to go yet!

Sorry folks, definitely not up to photo-ready. The inspector doesn't care about missing floor boards and drywall acne and paint scabbies, but I do! I haven't even gotten to final-kitchen-photo stage, much less the house. But I did unpack and move a little more in the DR yesterday even though I'll have to move it again for floorboard installation: enough is enough! Still, while it's flattering to be asked for pictures, I just do want to clarify that they're just not on the horizon yet. :(

We're FINAL!!!!
