There is a formula somebody once told me about sizes of chandeliers but I can recall what it is. I love that chandelier also. It's beautiful.

this Pottery Barn chandelier is adorable and beautiful! I've had my eye on it as well. Size wise, I think it would be just fine. There are sizing guidelines for chandeliers over tables. One guideline is that you want 10 inches of table on either size of the chandelier, so, 42-20 ==22. Which is perfect since your chandelier is 20 inches wide. The general guidance is to hang your chandelier 60 inches from the ground, give or take a few inches based on personal preference.

You didn't ask for this feedback but, I'll give it anyway, a bit trepedatiously. Stylewise I'm not sure that the PB chandelier is a good fit for your DR. I could be totally wrong here, and if I am wrong, I hope others will correct me. But, to my eyes the PB chandelier looks french country casual, even whimsical, while your living room leans more towards traditional American, structured. Maybe I'm misjudging your DR since I can't see all of it?

I'm afraid I have to agree. Unless you are planning other major changes it doesn't quite go with anything in the room, really.

Here's a general rule for figuring size:

The general rule here is to add together the length and width dimensions of the foom. What you get is the proper diameter for most any chandelier youÂll need there. For example, if your room is 12 ft. x 14 ft. (12 + 14 = 26). So, you would want the diameter of the chandelier to be 26". Here are a couple of size guidelines: Room size is smaller than 10x10, use a 17" to 20" wide chandelier. Room size is 12x12, use a 22" to 27" wide chandelier. Room size is 14x14, use a 24" to 32" wide chandelier.

I wasn't sure if it went with my dining room either but I loved it!! I have looked and looked at chandeliers in person, online, etc. but I keep coming back to this one.

I will have to measure our current one; I thought I loved it but the glass always looks green to me (the tint or something in it).

It's only American and structured as it's all I know how to do. :o)

The buffet lamps now have red lampshades, that was the wild streak coming out in me. :o)

I've also read table width less 12-in. which would be 30-in. diameter. I think it depends on how dense or open the chandelier is. IMO, the chandelier looks too small even in the Pottery Barn photo:

Yes, in this case I think you should consider looking for a different chandelier that is more harmonious with the furniture that you already have in the room. Sorry, I know this isn't the answer you were looking for!

I notice that most of the metal in your room is brass. you might consider looking for a brass chandelier. I've attached a link to something that might work a little better. This is just to give you an idea on a direction; I'm not suggesting that this is the perfect chandelier for your room.

Since I get so overwhelmed, does everyone think the crystal is ok in the room, just not the metal? I know the only thing I don't want is the bright brass gold that I currently have.

Yes, I think a crystal chandelier would look really nice in your DR. But then again, I'm known to be partial to chandeliers:-) I agree that the bright brass gold is dated and you don't want to play up that aspect. Good luck with your search!

For me, if I really love stuff, it goes together. And I think the same is true for your DR.

You're decorating your house for yourself, and why on earth should you wake up every morning to a chandelier that meets some objective standard of "going together" instead of to one that you love? Sheesh.

And besides, if you love the chandelier and only LIKE your current DR set, guess what might be next??

I really like the chandelier. 8 years ago, I bought a 1980 home filled circa 1980's ugly light fixtures. I have a Queen Anne dining room set. Anything I put up there would have been an improvement on what was there. I replaced my dining room fixture with something I loved even though it's kind of country french. I could'nt afford a new dining room set but I just made it work. If you really like it buy it and make it work.

I can't afford to replace my dining room set (DH would have a cow!); right now it's just a chandelier in the budget. And convincing him for the $300+/- was hard enough (he thinks our current chandelier is fine, he's so practical!).

Marybeth---I think we have the same dining room set! And I envy you for being brave enough to go with your heart. I think that's what I may do, what's $30 shipping if it makes my heart sing every time I walk in the room.

Okay.. I think that the chandelier is gorgeous and if you love it, you should go for it! I don't know about the size, but think you should go with what makes your heart sing!

That's a beautiful chandelier, but I think it's going to be too small for your table. I have a 60" round table, with a 28" diameter chandelier and it looks fine. According to the below link, a chandelier should be about half the size of the table. So, a 30" chandelier would be good for your table, but a 20" chandelier is probably going to look like a mini chandelier. OTH, I think the style will look fine with your dining set. You could add some slipcovers to your chairs for a fresh updated look, and have a brand new space! I would take my DH's money and have some of the great shoppers here find you a more appropriate size with the same style.

Whew! You beat me to it beekeeper! I saw this and 'ran' over here to show you, cathrugg! I think it IS the same chandelier. Can you say BARGAIN?

Nix that! Upon closer inspection of the Overstock chandy, it needs to be assembled and hardwired! No wonder it is at a great price! Unless you have the patience for it, you'll be speaking a whole other language!!!!

Don't all chandy's have to be hardwired? That just means hooking it up to the electrical in the ceiling, and not having a wire running to the outlet, like a table lamp.

Assembling chandeliers really is not very difficult. You just have to attach the arms and baubles. My Irish crystal chandelier needed to be assembled. It's not rocket science.

I'm not saying buy it, read the reviews. Most people rave about it. It has 4.5 stars, and that's with 53 reviews.

This one appears to need to be both wired (in terms of assembly) and hardwired (not able to plug into a wall outlet), but it's mostly just fiddly work rather than rocket science to do the wiring part, and your choice for installing it would be the same as with the PB chandelier. That was a great find. (it's increasingly common for budget chandeliers to come needing assembly like this)

I think the only wiring that needs to be done is running it up the chain, the photo shows it already in the main part of the chandy. And of course attaching it to your house's electricity in the ceiling.

I was looking for a coupon code, but can't find one. If you use ebates, I think you get 4% back. Someone on GW surely has a magazine with a coupon code for 10% though.

Can't say for sure on this one, but a lot of these now need the wiring for the arms to be attached to the central wire, too.

My guess is probably not. Overstock carries knock-offs of a lot of PB stuff, but if it works, who cares?

Going back to the original PB photo posted by GWBR, I do note that the chandelier is hung lower in that photo than your current one hangs. I think that's to compensate for the size aspect and that may be something you can play with to make this one work for you.

The fact that you don't use the room much really affirms that this should be something you enjoy looking at (who can argue with a singing heart?), so still sounds very much like the right decision to me.

If you go back and read the reviews of the Overstock one, people's reviews compare it to the 'barn' store one and it's not the same. Many people loved it, but others returned it because it wasn't the quality they wanted.

I am so excited I can hardly wait. I don't remember what magazine I found it in (I had a pile of them but it would have been like Redbook or Good Housekeeping, etc.). The code is #145753 for $15 off any order over $100. I think it's good til the end of February.

DD2 recently purchased an AF Lighting chandelier with super long cord and plug for her bedroom. DH got it ready to hang, measured, then cut so that it could be hardwired. Not a big deal.

We were recently chandelier shopping (haven't found "the one" yet), and several places informed me that the formula for sizing is to take the width of your table and subtract 10 inches, so that would mean that for correct balance, you should get a 32" diameter chandelier. I don't know if this formula is any more valid than the others that were offered, just thought I'd share what I heard (from more than one source).

As for your style of room and the light fixture, I think mixing things up is a great idea, as long as a sense of scale and purpose is maintained (you probably wouldn't want an industrial-type fixture in a traditional DR, but there are talented people who could probably make anything work). I think that "french country" is too specific a name for something that would look lovely in a traditional room.

As for the PB chandelier, I think that it just might be too small for your table (as I agree that it is in the PB pic that someone posted). If you love it, go for it, but maybe there are similar ones that come in various sizes? We found a few we loved, but so far, most of them are WAAAY too expensive (I love the chandeliers from Fine Art Lamps; one is $11,000. and that is just not even close to our budget!). We are going to start the search again, now that the holidays are over.

Cathrugg, How did the chandelier turn out? I was getting ready to order the PB Bellora today and thought I'd search the forum first and found your thread. Did the Overstock one work out? Was there a lot of work to putting it together?

I love this chandelier so much I might get it for my kitchen table and my entry. The overstock price sure makes sense! Thanks.
