I like most any soup that doesn't have chicken in it.

Clam chowder or lobster

Vegetable or sausage

I use a teaspoon, a soup spoon is harder for me to handle.

Ok, ladies of the gardens, (and kitchens), let's let it ALL hang out now and go for it! We've worked all spring, summer and fall, and now it's time to talk cooking! And enjoying the fruits, (or veggies) of our labors. Like the rest of you, fall is the time when I love to get in the kitchen and cook, filling the house with wonderful smells. That's one of the reason I love Oklahoma, the change of seasons. Fall just brings with it, a change in the feeling of things as we change from one mode to another. It's time for soups, and stews, and baking breads, pies, muffins and biscuits,( slathered with butter and jam or jelly of choice). Tonight, I'm making, more for DS than me, chicken and biscuits. Only I make the biscuits separate, so they don't get soggy baking in the oven with the liquid part of the concoction. Then, he splits them once done and ladles the chicken "gravy" over all. Of course there are a hundred variations on the theme, and I've tried most all of them at one time or another, but that's what's on the menu tonight. I came across this blog and started reading. Great stuff, you can tell these ladies, (and guy) know their way around a biscuit. The one moniker cracked me up, "Old ladies in Fist Fights". Anyway, they were discussing the pros and cons of biscuit making. I am making mine ala Carol's, by the BIG BATCH, with the exception that I use butter. I keep my batch in the fridge or even freezer to keep the butter cold and fresh. I do mine a little different that those discussed in this blog. I melt a large batch of butter in the microwave, and then cool and put it in the freezer til it's ice cold and solid. Then, I work in the cold butter bits, one half at a time, to coat the self-rising flour mixture, to prevent as much gluten from forming as possible. Everythings done with the lightest touch possible and the least mixing. When the biscuits are patted out and cut, in this case, "Cat Head" biscuits, I dip them in melted butter, and pop them in a preheated 450 degree oven til nice and golden. I always make buttermilk biscuits, buttermilk pancakes, buttermilk cornbread, and as often as possible. Carol's method makes this painless. Here are some of the details and my specific questions and concerns. Have at least 6 people participate, what should be the limit if more want in? Everyone will bring a container of soup for everyone attending plus 1 which will be used for everyone to taste. How big should the containers be? Suggestions have been 1 qt or 1 1/2 qt? Family sizes range from 1 -5 people. Some people say bring the soup anyway you want (container wise) others insist the soup is in ziplock freezer bags pre-frozen flat. I like containers better. I will make sure there are a variety of soups and ask those attending to bring the recipe to share. I will provide everthing else needed including desserts, bread, etc. Now some of these events are real swaps where you would say I will trade you my chicken noodle for your potato soup. Others are just like a cookie exchange where you get 1 of each variety. I don't want any hurt feelings from no one wanting to trade for your soup and there being a clear "favorite". I would like everyone to get 1 of each variety BUT being that I have a family of 4 I actually would rather have 2 containers of 3 types of soup than 6 containers each different. It really doesn't matter that much to me either way I just love soup. Hope that all makes sense. If you were attending what would you like for sizes, container types, way to exchange?

RECIPE: Wanted: Broccoli soup recipe(no canned soups added)

CREAM OF BROCCOLI SOUP (serves 2) 1 medium head broccoli 1 medium potato, thinly sliced 2 TBL butter 1/2 medium onion, coarsely chopped 2 TBL flour 1 cup warm chicken broth 1 cup warm milk 1/4 cup warm heavy cream Salt & pepper to taste 1 tsp dried basil Cook the broccoli & potatoes in salted water until tender. Set aside 4 flowerets of broccoli for garnish. Heat the butter ina saucepan & add the onion. Cook stirring until the onion is transparent, but not brown. Add the flour & cook, stirring until smooth. Place the remaining broccoli & potatoes in a processor or blender & puree the vegetables. Gradually add the broth & milk. Add the cream a little at a time until the soup is of the right consistency. Return the soup to the saucepan. Add pepper, salt & basil & reheat. Garnish each bowl w/the reserved flowerets of broccoli & serve.~~Simply Superb

The Taco Soup recipe I use makes 10-12 servings (or more) and sometimes I double it if I am preparing it for a bunch of hungry firefighters. I usually make it in a big stock pot, but you can make it in a crock pot if your crock pot is large enough (my largest crock pot can hold a single batch of this recipe but my smaller one cannot, and if I double it, I have to cook it in a large stock pot on the stove). This one gets rave reviews whenever I make it and it often is my go-to recipe when I'm cooking food to take to a bereaved family. I think the one thing that makes this Taco Soup more flavorful than any other taco soup recipe I've ever used is the packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix. Paula Deen's Taco Soup Recipe For chicken tortilla soup, I don't usually use a recipe, although I am sure that the first time I made it, I did use a recipe. Since then, I just wing it and vary how I make it depending on what sort of tomatoes and peppers I have on hand. Since I am a "pinch of this" and a "handful of that" type cook, it can be hard to translate that sort of cooking style into a recipe unless I were to go into the kitchen right now, whip up a batch and measure everything precisely as I did it. However, I looked online to find a recipe that is most like the one I use and I found the one from Rick Bayless. This one is so similar to what I do that I wonder if the first recipe I tried was indeed his. The only thing I do differently from the way he does it (and his way is superior, of course, as it gives you a smoother soup) is that I just throw everything in the pot and cook it. My fave is beef-barley, home made. I like clam chowder in a restaurant and I use a teaspoon. Hubs uses a big spoon. His mouth is bigger than mine. LOL Dottie

My most favorite is an Asian soup that my son in laws makes. Daughter makes wonderful beef barley, home made. My most most favorite was my daddy's soup that he made for years. He died twenty years ago and my mother has tried to duplicate, but nothing seems to taste the same. He would use pork backbones, beef, and veggies. Would cook everything in a pot, and then at the end would add them together. I did not like soup at all back then, but when he would make his soup, I could eat a quart without stopping. Next thing I love is oyster stew.

likes? not many i don't like...maybe panera's onion in a bread bowl is high on the list.

does anyone remember the frozen soup that campbell's did eons ago? they had a creamy bisque (sp) either lobster or tomato that was really good for commercial product...

my fave to make at home is chicken, with lots of veggies...

oh i'm a teaspoon user, dh larger...

In a restaurant it is French Onion as a favorite. I like any soup that is either vegetarian or has seafood in it. For homemade I like my split pea that has some baby lima beans in it and also like to make black bean, minestrone, or vegetable barley. I think I have 12 or 13 soup recipes that I like to make.

What kind of soup do you like? Any kind except lentil and oyster stew.

Favorite restaurant soup? Clam chowder or lobster bisque. Most restaurant soups are too salty for my taste.

Favorite soup to make at home? Vegetable beef.

Soup spoon or regular? Soup spoon.

I would love Dottie's or hallsgarden's daughter recipe for beef barley.

All good. I use a teaspoon a soup spoon seems to big for me.

patti: I plead old age in trying to post a recipe from a site. Hope its okay to post the name of the website. Smittenkitchen.com is where she gets most of her recipes now. Under soups, barley,beef, and leek is the soup recipe she uses. We have tried so many of the recipes from that site and they have been oh, so good. Sorry if I wasn't to state a website. Just tell me if I have to go sit in the corner for a bit.

In a restaurant my favorite is Perkin's Chicken Noodle,
and my homemade is Beef Vegetable.

I don't like cream soups anymore, for some reason.

To me, soup is a side dish. I like a variety of soups, but stews and chilis are more favorable with me. Thick is the key. The old ad so thick you could eat it with a fork is my kind of "soup". I want the bulk, not the broth.

I'm making pea soup right now. Also love Manhattan clam chowder, minestrone, wedding soup, butternut squash and a good onion soup. My favorite spoon is a creamed soup spoon. I don't care if it is proper or not, I just like the round spoon and the size. A teaspoon is too small and a regular soup spoon is too big. In the summer I like either red or white gazpacho and red bell pepper soup with a bit of crab meat on top!

I think I prefer cream soup;
I order clam chowder if I know it's good;
One of my home made favorites is a tamale soup'
Use a soup spoon, always!

Love soup, probably three times a day would be OK for me. I just finished off a batch of chicken and dumplings, having taken some to an ailing friend. Tonight I'm having corn/potato chowder. In the freezer, I have about ten bowls of various soups.

My favorite is shrimp gumbo, which is more of a stew, I guess than a soup, and I like eating it at home. I prefer homemade soups. If I eat it out, I like the one with potatoes and kale at Olive Garden and I like a good tortilla soup at a particular Mexican restaurant. I like using a soup spoon.

Love soup! I really like clam chowder and any of the soups at the Olive Garden. The only kind I ever make is Cream of Broccoli cause it's so easy!

Potato - just finished off the last of what was made this week for lunch today. It's one of the top comfort foods.

Love any type of soup, chili or stew in the winter. Only one I don't make at home, that I love, is the Lobster Bisque in a bread bowl at Red Lobster. Haven't had that for ages!
