Beans....never heard this before

Yep, the garbanzo beans that I put on to soak at lunch are talking to me....a snapping or popping kind of sound. While I was just now working in the kitchen, I heard the odd sound coming from the counter where the beans were in a stainless steel bowl soaking beside the sink. Sort of sounded like a piece of cellophane or plastic bag as it settles, very faint. So I shook the bowl and held it closer to my ears and dang! the faint snapping noise is coming from the dried beans.

What is that? Has anyone else ever heard it?

Teresa, they're just talkin' to ya probably they have been thirsty for a long time.
My Rice Krispies talk to me. I have regular conversations with Snap!, Crackle! and Pop!

We all know that beans talk to us but typically a few hours after the meal.

The word garbanzo is an old Romanian term that roughly translates into "Little beans that have converstations with the cook". Some people call them chickpeas because "women have been known to talk to beans when their boorish husbands won't talk to them".

Of course I've lied about everythig except the first sentence... please forgive me

I stand by my earlier complaint while also acknowledging what sleeperblues said. It is indeed a sad fact that for many people, when money gets tight, medical bills get pushed to the back of the line and frequently don't get paid at all. Unfortunately, those doctors still have a practice to run and employees they must pay, regardless of whether someone has paid their bill or not. I suppose I pine for "the old days" myself. For the majority of my adult life, we lived paycheck to paycheck. We could budget to pay you in installments but we just didn't have a lump sum to give you upfront to pay in advance. Hubby and I have managed, over the past 10 years, to work our way out of that lower class (paycheck to paycheck) predicament into a solidly middle class status. Before that, it was (largely) an honor system. We promised we would pay what we could, when we could, until the balance was paid; the doctors took us at our word AND we fulfilled our obligation. Unfortunately, too many have gamed the system for too long and now, an increasing number of doctors and facilities require full upfront payment. Luckily for me, I've established a rapport with my regular physicians and dentists and they KNOW I'm "good for it" and they allow me to get needed services and pay out over time if I need to. I worry for my children though. It has taken years of seeing the same practitioners before we reached a comfortable spot that I could get what I need and they know I won't shaft them. What will my kids do in 15 years if they are just starting out and can't afford 1000 upfront for, say a root canal and crown?

Way to cool for words. Super nice really big tell your friend it's called. The walking Sanserveria IIRC it's Cv is of the cylindrica type. Pretty easy to root ( yours already has some roots already started ) and just as easy to grow. Not alot of posting going on in there but you may want to ask for more specifics in the Sanserveria forum. Thank - you and your donating friend for showing ( all of us here) such a wonderful Sans specimen.

I have never made chickpeas from dried beans, I always just open a can!

I ask this question to my Pressure Cooker Yahoo Group and one answer is that the sound is the beans splitting while soaking. No bubbles appeared in my soaking beans, but the popping sounds got a little louder after soaking 4-6 hours.

Garbanzo beans may be more prone to fermentation if they soak too long and one person said she soaked her G. beans in the fridge. Mine soaked for 8 hours before I cooked them. I was planning to cook them under pressure, but my cooker manual did not have them listed and said specifically not to cook any beans other than the ones listed in the manual. So, I cooked them in the pressure cooker pot with the lid partly cocked open. After 30 minutes they were done.

I was surprised that they tasted really good to me! I usually use G. beans to make hummus, but found a recipe for falafel I wanted to try. The beans I cooked tasted much better than those out of a can. Guess I can never go back now! I plan to freeze some of the beans I cooked last night.
