Do you like your tiered cutlery drawer?

One of the promotions our cabinet manufacturer offers is free cutlery. Our KD suggested the tiered one over a regular one because it's valued higher -- the tiered cutlery is a complete drawer that's part of the base cabinet while the regular one is just a detached piece you put in your drawer.

The one thing I'm unsure about is how shallow each tier is. For those who have one like this below, are you happy with it?

I had a tiered Rubbermaid type one in my old kitchen. It was fine. However, I would be reluctant to select anything that could not be taken out and easily cleaned.

THis sounds/looks like a great idea, for all the smaller pieces of cutlery. I too would be worried about the depth of each drawer though!

I love it, maybe because I don't think of it as just a deli/meat drawer, although it handles those foods too. I've used it so much that I'm relieved that it didn't break from too much weight. When something is easily crushed (or spilled, or knocked over) like boxes of berries, that's where I put it. Wide and relatively-flat things that can't take being stacked-upon, like cakes and cheesecakes, also go there. The front of the drawer is visible when closed, so it's a handy place to stick appetizers and leftovers and small things like bags of baby carrots so they don't get pushed back and forgotten. While the FDs do require more care to close than a one-door fridge, I find it less effort to open the two narrower doors than to swing out one large one.

2 tier cutlery divider

The cabinet is setup as two large bottom drawers and a smaller top drawer. I want to keep my utensils in the cutlery divider. I have two spots I can put it in. There is a 30" cabinet and a 27." Just based on other up charges, I think the price difference would be around $50 more to put it in the 30in. Do you think that it would be better to install it in the 30in base? I've read on these forums that it is best to wait on the inserts. I will probably buy aftermarket knife inserts and see how the other cabinets get used. I know for sure I will need an insert for silverware. On a side note, I'm almost finished with my kitchen order. I am getting pricing on a blind corner wall cabinet that is 42" or 43" long. It will replace a 21" and a 24 in corner. There were just too many small doors on that side. For some reason, the blind corners do not go all the way to the wall. There is a 2" or 3" space. Schuler builds the blind corner with a turn, so there is no need to add a filler for the adjacent cabinet run. I just thought it was odd that the do not go all the way to the wall.

We too have the 24" Sharp Micro drawer. We do love it and I love that it has the warming feature. However there are some caveats: It's not very deep. You can't put a big acorn squash in whole for example, and a tall car mug won't fit either. While it's easy to clean the drawer itself, if you or someone else forgets to cover your food and there are splatters, it is NOT so easy to clean the roof of the cavity but it can be done with some contortion. That being said, I love that the microwave is below the counter, I love lifting stuff out, I love all the features like sensor reheat, melt butter, soften cream cheese, sensor defrost and best of all warming drawer. I'd definitely do it again although I seriously think dh wouldn't because he really misses the ability to use his car mugs and that's practically all he uses the MO for.

I think all those tiny drawers are simply a weird design of larger drawer dividers. My smallest drawer is in 12" drawer cabinets. Even those are worthless. I store 1) pot holders 2) large utensils such as ladles, BBQ junk. In the bottom I store plastic bags. In it's mirror image, I store shelf support things, then paper bags, then nothing (so far). I'd put in a full height thing for trays, or a step stool or something. That seems like a silly waste of space, though. Just me. I am tired of small drawers and skinny cabinets. I think 12" cabinets were invented just to fill in space, not for actual usage. Just my op-onion. C.

I'm really happy I put mine in. The trays are both very shallow so it was a bit of a challenge to arange everything so that it makes sense. but things are not crowded and I really love that. I fit everything in except my spatulas and all the stuff that I keep in my crock by my stove.
I have inset drawers and had to be careful with my forks and spoons because I did bang the frame a few times until I figured it out that I have to keep them on their sides. now it works out perfectly.

As soon as I find my camera cord, I'll post pics :)

Love mine! Along with the normal flatware, I also have things like chopsticks, rice paddles, fondue forks, sundae spoons, etc. There's a place for everything.

Here you go:
Top tier

I keep my smaller spoons and forks separate from the alrger ones. I may add little dividers to keep them separate but really for the most part they don't slide into eachother.

Bottom Tier

the top tier does remove for cleaning, but truth be told I'll probably just vacuum it and wipe it out as needed.

Most likely, you can simply unscrew the rails and remove the sliding upper tier, if you later decide against it. I'd do it unless you have super-bulky silverware.

Thanks to you all for chiming in and thanks for the photos, craftlady07. Okay, I'll go for it. If nothing else, it's another feature in the new kitchen to show off. :D

I love the convenience of storing 3 different cutlery sets in my one small drawer. I have a small kitchen, so maximizing space any way I can is great.

DH doesn't like the drawer because in order to store 3 different sets, everything must go back in the drawer in an orderly fashion and you can't just slam the drawer. First close the upper small drawer than the lower surrounding drawer. I don't mind, it's quiet and does the job.

I've never seen two tier cutlery trays in a Tandembox (Ikea) Blum drawer.

I may have to make my own.

I have these drawers now, as internal drawers, with a low panel front.
Currently, two internal drawers, one above the other, occupy cabinet height of 7.25" - 7.5"h.
I'd like to equip one with a two level cutlery tray.
Then, that drawer would take up 3.5" or 4" in height.
And I could put the other internal drawer in another cabinet.
Net: space saving. More room. StorageRaum.
Having only one drawer's wood floor panel is a height savings of more than 1/2" to start.

Yes, the floor of a 2 tier tray combo is a bit harder to access.
I don't see it as a problem; it's one more movement in the same direction (in-out).
Also, the floor level of a 2 tier tray combo leaves room for only about 1.5" high.
It could hold other things I rarely use.
(a formal dining set with fish knives, butter knives etc.)

Web searching, I have found that some of the two-tier trays out there cost more than the entire Tandembox drawer.
