Oh wow! looks like a fun day. I used to enjoy ice fishing, but haven't gone in years as often the ice doesn't get thick enough to be safe (for very long).

Don't the fish just taste so much better when they are caught through the ice...or is it my imagination?

Thanks for sharing pics.

You need a much bigger fire! Looks like you had fun.

It hurts my bones to see those pictures.

Thanks Glenda for the offer...never been to Florida. Your fish must be large if are in the pond all year. Still havn't seen that black koi but tomorrow plan on finish cleaning the edges of the pond and refilling it. Will have to put dechlor in pond before cleaning as town water treated with both chloramines and chlorine. I do miss my fish in the winter as used to keep them in the basement. A 400 gal tank (with filter) is just too big too much humidity for the basement and I would need too big of an aquarium to house them inside. Didn't lose any in the transfer and am feeding them once a day in the garage until the water temp gets colder. The only problem with doing that is water changes as have no outlet in the garage and can't use garden hose because of the tap water thing. So it will be 5 gal buckets but should only have to do it a couple of times before winter hits and the temp drops. Have fun enjoying your pond! Patti

Mike, surprise, I am confused. Water bodies heat and cool more slowly than a land mass. It is a matter of absorbing and re-radiating solar energy. In early winter, if there is no snow the ground radiates heat and becomes cold and freezes. If there is a blanket of snow, the ground does not cool quickly and frost is delayed. A water surface--is a pond large enough to be considered in this--cools more slowly, or stays relatively warmer longer than the land. That is why the Great Lakes prevent the northeast from having a climate similar to Siberia. Are you saying that when the surface water cools enough then ice forms; surface water changes state. By the time I have 5 inches of ice on my pond, then the top surface of the ice is the original ice that formed, subsequent ice forming under it? If I have 5" of ice, then water that was 25" deep should be around 20" deep? Seems logical but seems not quite right considering the two different states of the water. Snow cover is a two-sided insulator perhaps? It keeps cold in the pond and by reflecting solar energy prevents warming? If cold is kept in and relative warmth kept out, isn't this better than no snow? Why does ice freeze deeper and harder with no snow then, as with the ice truckers? The very cold air now affecting water temperature under the ice? There no longer being a temperature differential between land and water creating a more uniform subsurface temperature horizon? Not even to consider how deep ice can form in a body of water compared to the land. Some law of physics absent somewhere in our discussion, no doubt in my assumptions. While a bit esoteric and scientific, it is on topic for a change. 27 and counting--go for 26 Mike

Re: The ice man, by plllog on "Hands free cars" story

Um... that's not quite the story. Since my name is on the subject line: There was a horse drawn wagon in my picture book. We had an automatic icemaker, and sometimes my folks froze blocks of ice in plastic containers, but when we were having a big party or going camping, my father would get a block of ice at the ice house, which wasn't far away, and he'd take me. He'd tell the story of the ice man whose horse knew the way to connect the blocks of ice with the horse drawn wagon in my storybook. When he was a kid they had an ice box. My mother only knew electric refrigerators, even out in the country. Sometimes, equestrians would ride down out of the hills, where there were some horse estates and trails, but that's as close as we got to horses where we lived. The milkman came in a panel truck and brought the milk inside and put it in the fridge. There was a breadman, I don't think daily, also in a panel truck, but one that opened up in the back with a display of breads and pastries, but my mother had a car and preferred to go to the bakery or supermarket. There are a few reasons primarily responsible for refrigerators not lasting so long nowadays. Electronics help meet energy savings goals, but are notoriously delicate. People want all kinds of gizmos, like crushed ice dispensers, which have never had a lot of longevity. The ice maker is the most likely place for failure. With all the plastic parts, which make shipping lighter, can be molded rather than wrought, and don't require metal ores (though petroleum is also a scarce resource), and overseas workforces who work for fewer dollars than North American workers, fridges are way cheaper in terms of buying power spent than they were ever so long ago, and far cheaper to replace than repair. People move a lot and move their appliances, which is hard on them. Landlords used to supply fridges.

Snacks for an all day charter fishing trip - Atlantic ocean

I hated to be elbow-to-elbow on a boat too small to keep lines from getting tangled constantly and people going back and forth on a too narrow walkway to the head or to the ice box or wherever. I swear everyone went by or behind me 19 times each bumping me because most don't have experience on the sea. I will never go on a charter with 50 people again on that small of a boat. Otherwise, there were just a few of us who fished when a squall drenched us briefly, cooling us off nicely, and we few caught the most doubles on the lines and right into a school of dolphinfish!!! I am sure I was the oldest at 73 and a woman who knows how to fish and can walk on a boat in 3-5' seas. To eat on board, just me since DH's new meds' affected his equilibrium: my new recipe for Syrian stuffed grape leaves, cherry tomatoes, cheese and crackers, bananas, pickles, medjool dates, pineapple tidbits, PB&J, enough bottled water to slosh, and caramel M&M's. Boy, does the fresh ocean air make you hungry - sorta like when you are camping. I did catch some nice vermilion snappers, grey grunts, dolphinfish (mahimahi) - gorgeous colors!, and small amberjack. Freezer won't be full but nicely piled up for the summer grilling and en Papillote. It was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday but, alas, it may be the last time unless I can find others to go with me.

Cool, where in Canada do you live? We don't get that holiday here in Newfoundland.

Great pictures!

I would love to do a winter activity like that.

Casey, Family Day is our new Ontario holiday but if you work for the Federal Government you still have to work so it is not a holiday for everyone.

Looks like a great time, although a cold one. Guess you are used to the frigid weather though. I'm a wimp these days. I don't think I could get on enough layers to stay warm. Maybe if I was perched right against that fire. LOL Enjoyed the pics Clairdo. Thanks!

Brings back memories of when I lived back in Quebec/Ontario. Out on Vancouver Island we don't get temperatures much below freezing, so ice fishing isn't seen out here. brrrrrrr

Alberta and Saskatchewan had Family Day, I think that both of them call it, before.

Manitoba has named their day after Louis Riel, a French-Metis guy in the West who wanted some regional autonomy and the gov't. fixed him and his few guys in a small battle in N. Sask. in '85. No idea how many killed, but it wasn't very many.

They hung Louis Riel.

We'd had another tiny revolution in Ontario and Quebec in 1837.

I'd said a while ago that we hadn't had international military battles in N. America N. of the Alamo for 190 years, or within one country for 140, referring to that as the most recent.

But our battle was really the last, 120 years ago in 1885 ... and it was so small that I forgot about it.

The Ontario government declared a new holiday in February, Family Day (to promote "Family Values", I guess, including family-like assemblies based on same-sex couples), after they'd won an election last year.

So now there's a holiday in the four contiguous provinces from Ontario to Alberta on that day. The Alberta holiday, governed by a more Conservative group, with an election in the offing, has defined "family" a bit more narrowly, I think.

About 40% of the people in those areas, for various reasons, had to be at work today/yesterday ... but many of the workers had trouble, for their day care providers were on holiday.

At least some Toronto civic workers were on duty - they had a lot of snow to move.

Just a regular old holiday, same as every other day, for us retirees.

Well, not exactly - quite a few stores closed, and provincial govt. offices (but Fed. workers, as (Susan?) reported, were on duty).

One Federal political leader said that they should make it a Canada-wide holiday.

Some said that such an eventuality is a bit remote, for Canada's productivity is much lower than in the U.S., that the rise in value of our dollar has hurt our manufacturing industries, and though we've had 8 statutory holidays and U.S. workers 13 ... they think that there's little chance of expanding our numbers for a while.

Hope you all find some interesting and memorable things in the rest of this week.
