Another PAP update...Regular screenings are good!

So this one isn't as positive, I knew it when the doctor himself called. One of the polyps showed early signs of cancer. He said he was very surprised as there were no indications to the naked eye that there was cancer present. SOOOO..I have to see an GYN-OB, and he said PROBABLY a hysterectomy and that should remove any possibility of cancer. Boy that is a scary word. Scary when I've read about it with friends here, scarier when it's about me.

Needless to say I was at work when the doctor told me this. My boss sent me home when I told her, I was trying to cope, but I guess I just need time to cry every once in a while today.

It was caught very early the OB/gyn said, and that is only because of the fact that I get regular paps!!! SO if you haven't had one within the last year, please, please go and get a pap done!!!

Yes, cancer is a scary word and even more so when it applies to oneself. Thank God it was caught early. I have friends who have had this kind of cancer and a hysterectomy is all that was needed for treatment. Like you, I am distressed by all the people on this forum that have gone through or are going through this ordeal. Hugs to you all and a special prayer for you Vickey as you proceed down this road.

Oh Carolyn! No, I've never heard of it but *I* am fine! I went in, they took some (painful) images. One density spot was near my chest wall, so 'ouch'. Turned out to be swollen lymph glands that pressed out. Cooperbailey, you win the cake this time. My internet has been down all day or I would have checked in much sooner. Carolyn, an old girlfriend was in the breast imaging center and she was having cysts removed. I swear, being a female is complicated. Thanks for the prayers and positive thoughts. I must have really felt them. I was amazed at how calm I was. I didn't freak out at all. I just kept thinking, if it is something, better deal with it today than in 6 months. Still have to get a colonoscopy and my blood work. I'm turning 55 in November so I'm getting my 55,000 service. LOL! I'm going to be thinking of you Carolyn. Don't forget to update us here!

I agree with Anettemartinrn, whether the original story of Kathy West is true or not is trivial. Ovarian cancer is true and the fact that it is almost a totally silent cancer is just as true. How do I know? I have it. And I had no signs in the beginning. Most of you will not recognize my name - I used to post here years ago and only recently began lurking again. Last fall, I started to have serious pain when having a bowel movement. Thinking I had Irritable bowel syndrome, I let it go for a few weeks before finally making an appt. with a gastroenterologist. It was only then discovered after a series of tests that I have advanced cancer. By the time I found out I had it, it had already spread throughout my peritoneal cavity. I immediately went to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer. The doctor told me most women 'present' as Stage 3 or even 4 because it's very hard to detect in the early stages. I had an extremely painful operation on January 2. They literally opened me from my groin to my rib cage, took every single organ out, and removed all the visible tumors. They were everywhere, my abdominal lining, my bladder, my colon (they had to resection a part of it), my diaghragm, and a tissue inside my abdomen called the 'omentum' which was also removed. I'm still not recovered from the operation, yet had to start my first round of chemo on February 5. I will have to go through 6 rounds of chemo. The first round has sucked; I cannot imagine what it's going to be like to go through the next 5. Once this cancer is in Stage 3, the return rate is really high and the 5-year survival statistics are not good. I can't even begin to express how depressed and angry I've become, how in fear for my life I am every single day, not knowing what's going to happen with me. I've never been sick in my life, always healthy. I ate right and exercised. I'm only 43 years old. I too was discouraged by my gynocologist from taking the CA125, because of the false positives. If I had the chance do it again, I'd take that CA125 anyway, false positive or not, even if I had to pay for it out of my own pocket. I would have insisted. I wish it would become a mandatory test.

I'm almost 74, with a long history of annual mammograms -- and the false positives and the biopsies chasing the false positives. I have also always had good health insurance to PAY for this. I have no family history of any cancer, and I'm going to die of *something* because that's what people do. There are so many other 'somethings* that I don't see the logic of focusing on an inconclusive test that finds a 'possible' cancer in my breast. (Where is the test for ovarian cancer -- which is probably going to be a much more accurate and simple blood test?) Because everyone with a detected abnormality gets treated, we don't know how many women's immune systems would have eliminated a breast abnormality without intervention, as does happen in non-human studies. Those human 'cancer survivors' are unknown, and intervention gets credited with 'saving lives', even as we see some eventual poor outcomes *due to the interventions*. I know *some* women benefit from mammography, but do you think *you* need a mammogram? A little test: Would you pay out of pocket for one? Remember when you could buy life insurance at the airport, payable in the event you died in a plane crash? When studies showed how *unlikely* that was, the sales vanished. How many women have mammographies year after year, solely because they are afraid?

Bac717, I am so happy for you. It is so scary to have "questionable findings" without a pandemic to add to the chaos. I had the same exact thing happen the first week of April with the same results. On top of it, at that time it was almost impossible to get a biopsy or see a breast specialist. Because of this, I encourage everyone to stay on top of all medical visits and don't reschedule because you can do it later. Later might be impossible or at least more difficult. In two weeks I have a skin check at Memorial Slone Kettering. I was at a regular derm to take off a few little growths that I thought were benign warts and of course, one was not. I've been down this road before so my concern is minimal and I know that I am not in danger, but I will not wait till I'm fully vaccinated to see the specialist.

vickey have your gp give a reccomentation for a oncologist gyn..it will save you time and having a "reg" gyn send you to one...there are several choices for your stage, and being caught this early...at least you had to good sense to care for yourself unlike me. ended up with full hyst, cervex, and overies removed as well... in my case it was a good thing, as i'm now on anti-hormone pills. (from the breast cancer)

an oncologist gyn is qualified to do surgery...and follow-up at least with mine, is about every 6 months, and i expect to see him for several more years. started in 06..

i was one of the lucky ones with my first round...while they did the surgery, they also did what the nurse called a "body wash" of the organs, which came back neg, so didn't have to have chemo..not so lucky with the breast...but i'm doing pretty well...

btw see your're in mn..are you close to mayo clinic?

Well, Vickey, I guess it's good and bad news all at once. Your boss is kind to let you go home. The news is shocking, and you need time to take it in. I wish you the best, and thanks for the PAP reminder to us all. I've gotten one yearly for decades with nary a problem result, but I'll keep it up.

'm so sorry you have to go thru this. My doctor once told me, if you get a PAP once a year, that will be enough. He said he's never had a patient die who got regular tests . Even if a cancerous tumor began to grow, a year gives enough time for it to be completely curable.
