Saying hurtful things out of anger

My husband and i have been together 8 yrs (married 3) we have a one year old son. He recently told me he has not been happy since we before we bought our house together 2 years ago. I did not expect this! I thought we were fine! Sure we argue but that's what couples do right? Well out of anger last night (i was hurt and upset) I told him that we didn't have to have kids (he obviously took this the wrong way)if he wasn't happy and that we didn't have to go in debt and now he is super mad and says he can not forgive me for this...Any suggestions on how to settle this argument and not to get a divorce? is it possible to make someone happy again??

Perhaps an apology is a good place to start.

Things said in anger - are never really meant.

Wait until you have calmed down and then both work out what you want out of life.

It is not - your fault or his fault - it is both your faults.

What is the best you can do, as a team ?

No, you can't make someone else happy. That's something he has to do for himself, just as you do. You can apologize for losing your temper, but if this is something he wants to use as a weapon against you, he'll hold on to it for a while. These things have a way of blowing over, but if it starts happening a lot, it's time to talk to a therapist.

Well they don't have to be 5 years old to "say the darndest things". In late Spring, when I had lots of roses blooming, I was walking around the yard with my teenager daughters and at one point, one of them pointed at my beautiful Souvenir de la Malmaison blooms and announced "I don't like the POOFY ones!" To make it worse, her sister agreed! (it's a wonder I didn't fall down dead right there in the yard!) They both like the HT blooms and their favorite was the somewhat scrawny bloom of the scraggly Blue Skies that I have in a pot. I'm hoping it's just a phase they are going through :) I am happy that they like the HT flowers, I like them too - but to dismiss the POOFY ones - argh! Lynn

I inherited a yard with lots of existing plants when we bought this house. I've been learning a lot, and I'd say that, in general, you want to leave the leaves that died back. It seems to be far more useful to plant things which come up at different times in about the same place to cover up the previous plant's old leaves. Also, cutting the leaves is more work, and leaving them there turns into free mulch and keeps the nutrients in the soil. I was going to check where you are (other than zone 5), as that might help in determining what to suggest. In general, I would suggest things which are locally native, simply because those are adapted to your area and are much more likely to live with little care once established. At a random guess, you're probably in New Hampshire in zone 5, so maybe http://www.plantnative.org/rpl-nen.htm would be interested to you. For bulb plants, I really like old house gardens, and their advanced search will let you choose bloom time, shade/sun, and soil type. Are you more the type for a cottage garden or a more formal type garden? That will also matter! In the shady, moist parts of my yard, I have various hosta, lily-of-the-valley (this _will_ spread if it's happy), solomon's seal, false solomon seal, jack-in-the-pulpet, a native part-to-full-shade creeping phlox, lungwort (one of the early type plants), bleeding hearts, ferns, hellebores, astilbes, some recently added primroses, a recently added monkshead, grape hyacinth, scilla. Note that my soil there is only moderately acidic (6.2 pH, buffer 6.6 pH). How acid is your soil? Also, the organic matter in my soil is _amazing_, between the leaves from the trees nearby and I presume ammendments by the previous owners. It looks like your shady area is shaded by a building, not a tree? How much sun does it get? In the part which gets very little light, I currently have hosta, lily-of-the-valley, and the aforementioned native creeping phlox. I am not sure what else might be ok there. It's also the north facing part of the yard. So it mostly gets blocked by the house and the fence.

I totally understand your situation, but I do want to ask about his "growing up" time. Was he raised in a family without a lot of stable conditions? By that, I mean "of the same" or "not normal conditions, should I say? My husband too was brought up in a "not so good environment, and he's #4 of 8 children, and it was a rough up-bringing for them all to some degree. Some areas affected some more than others, but this being said, does help to know the basis of the stem. Most of the 7 children (as 1 did die at the age of 18 in 1990) are on anti-depression medication, and have been diagnogsed as bi-polar, or something of similair. I've been married to the love of my life for 27 yrs this Oct. and let me tell you the last 3 haven't been fun at all. Most of the marriage has had it's times, but, it's like in full force now with the anger. In fact we've really fallen apart bad a few times lately, but we're starting counseling and marriage classes with a christian church this Friday. It's going to be ongoing. I just know it will. But I see you're stuggle, and you're doing the right thing by researching, and reaching out for advise or anything that may work. I've been there for quite some time, and you may want to google....Passive Aggressive. It sounds like you're really in a relationship with a husband with that condition. There's no cure, but it helps by you understanding. And not calling him out on it, as I knew I couldn't either as I don't have a degree to do so, but maybe even baby steps to help him see what he's actually doing. That's been my husband's problerm, and a passive agressive person always blames YOU! for everything. Even if it's black and white plain as day, and you had nothing to do with it, but it's you're fault and it will come down on your shoulders. Look it up, and not just one site, but many to fully understand, and let me know your thoughts. I'm the type that I believe I can fix anything, and i've been scared on this, even though i'm giving my best effort, but I can't throw this away until I know I've tried and down all that I can do. Sex, was getting scarce for a couple years, but i've even got that back to a couple times a week now. Awesome on that, until we argue, and then it just seems that he must take it to the extreme, and it doesn't stop until I take the larger part of the blame and reconcile. Just not what I intend to do for the rest of my life. I am 46 and he is 49, and we've just got to make this work, or else. 3 children, all grown and moved out, so that's a struggle also I'm thjinking, but it stems from his passive aggressive behavior and upbringing in such a passive household. Ok..just to clarify. This post was started by mom2emall. In her post she talks about how she does everything that the BM should be doing but is not. However....BM doesn't want to act like a BM but does not want SM doing things that she as the BM should be doing for the children. My point was.....finedreams.....that in this situation meaning mom2emall's situation...not your's...not everything is about you on these post...mom2emall plays the role of the BM but yet gets no thanks for it. Take ceph for example- post was: My situation with the anger/jealousy thing is that when BM asks "What did you and Dad do this weekend?" and A__ rattles off all the stuff that I did with him and/or all three of us did together, specifically saying my name in there too. She says "Oh that's good that you and Dad had such a good time". What am I? Dog's breakfast? It can be frustrating, but like I've said before, I can deal with that she's dismissive of me, as long as she's not actively being mean. Your response: ceph, it is not particularly important for BM that her son and you had a good time, it is important for her that her son and his dad had a good time. No matter how big is your role in his life, they are still the parents. Especially since you are not officially SM. It is very important for me that my daughter has a good relationship with her father and it is important for him that she has good relationship with me. But it is not as crucial for neither one of us that DD has a good time with our BFs or GFs. It is nice, just not as important. I never thought of adding "It is nice you had such a good time with your dad and... "his GF" I think your taking my post way out of context and too personal. I'm not talking about your situation. I was commenting on your post. In my opinion I would rather know whether my child is getting along with the GF or not. Afterall this other person is spending time with my child and helping out with caring for them. Of course I don't care if the X finds someone or not but if he does I would rather that person be someone who cares about the well being of my child and takes care of them when they are around. I personally think that purposely trying to ignore the fact that your child spent time with dad and GF/SM is steming from jealously..which to some degree I guess is normal however I am going to make sure my child knows that I am interested in everything they did whether it be with just dad or dad and GF/SM. I have learned this first hand....children will feed off of negative feelings and actions just as they will off positive ones. If the child senses that the BM is angry or even just a little upset about the fact that the GF/SM is spending time with them...the child usually will start feeling guility over enjoying being around Dad and GF/SM. My X did that to my daughter. She now shuts me and the fiance out because dad is not happy that there is someone else. Point being.. for the child's sake you have to push those ill feelings aside and do what is best for them. If the GF/SM is good to the child then don't give the child the impression that the GF/SM is scum of the earth.

I'm sorry.

I remember this kind of thing happening with my ex when we were very young & didn't have the experience to get along with each other (although the fact that he was a mama's baby who'd gotten his own way his entire life by throwing tantrums & punishing his mother didn't help...).

but life is both too short & too long to walk on eggshells for fear that your partner will say he 'can not forgive' you for something said in the heat of an argument, *especially* when the starting point of the argument was when *he* tossed out something as inflammatory as "I haven't been happy in the past 2 years."

Yes I've been happy and he has asked me. I've apologized several times but he refuses to come home or talk to a counselor. Says that the hurtful things I've said to him he just can't get past. Now he says he doesn't even know if he loves me just cares about me :( who knows but thinks for the replies.

There's more going on than this guy is telling you.

He seized on something you said in anger,
& now says he "can't forgive" you & refuses to get over it.

It just sounds like the kind of flimsy excuse that people make when they want out but they don't want it to be their fault;
they want it to be the other person's fault!

If you have the resources or the knowledge, you might check into expenditures, cell phone usage, etc.

This sure sounds like there's a possibility that there's another woman;
since he 'hasn't been happy in over 2 years', at some time in the future, you might find that he's known her for about 2 years.

Just in case, you must protect yourself & your child.

At the very least, make copies of statements in case the balances suddenly drop or disappear, & be sure that you have enough *cash* to live on for a few months in case he moves out & refuses to pay the house payment, etc.

I was thinking the same thing as sylviatexas, this is not really about the comments you made. When two people love each other they can easily forgive the hurtful comments made at an angry moment. Remember, he made the first hurtful comment. I think he was baiting you. Something else is going on, so yeah check on cell phone usage and protect yourself financially. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

It stops when we quit deluding ourselves that we can turn frogs into princes with a little love and manipulation and we start making major life decisions with reason and good sense!

Why is he mad at you for saying that if he has been unhappy for over two years, why did he decide to buy a house with you, and have a child with you? He should never have done either if he was unhappy. Did he think these two things would make a difference?
