Kids say and do the darndest things...

5 year old girls and roses are a cute match! One of my clients stopped in this morning with her grand daughter on her way to kindergarten (preK) and she hemmed and hawed a bit twisting and squirming. Her Grandma said, "Honey ASK HER! You are gona be lkate if we dont hurry!" after a few minutes of this, and she blurted out, "May I have a rose for my teacher?"

Well of COURSE you may have a rose for your teacher! I got my pruning shears and went outside with her expecting her to go for one of the large Hybrid teas or Grandifloras. I mean every one of them is heavy with blooms and they are mostly huge as well.

She turned left, so I was thinking COOL! Belinda's Dream (they are so covered the plants are weighed down currently and I could make an entire BOUQUET without hurting one plant) but no she kept on walking. She went to the KNOCKOUTS and picked ONE tiny flower out of a huge cluster...we tried to talk her out of it and into another one but there was no doing it! She was so excited to give her teacher that one particular flower! She said "The other flowers are pretty too but I wanted a ROSE!"

Kids are funny.

ah ah!! She picked the less "rose" in a rose bed :-)
Well, not children but grown-up adults where I live believe that roses, "proper" roses, are all shaped only like HTs. They look at my rugosas and say they are nice "plants", notice the shift in words, they are "plants" for them, not "roses".
What a "proper rose" might be, is still a mystery to me. A rose is a rose is a rose!... or no longer??

Actually I thought it was funny SHE thought that Knockouts were what roses are supposed to look like and that my others are NOT roses in her eyes....and add to it the one she picked was almost dead....LOL It was just cute.

For many years I tried to get Morning Glories to grow up a trellis that my husband put around our LP tank- never did have any luck with them so when my 4 year old (at the time) asked to help plant flowers I gave him a bunch of morning glory seeds to have for the garden- we had morning glories everywhere that year- When I asked him what he did to make them grow he says "nothing- i just stuck 'em in the dirt and left them alone". Now he plants morning glories in that bed every year and has named it his TURTLE GARDEN- he collects turtle figures all the time and even has our friends and family looking for new ones for him- his Granny got him 2 new ones for christmas this past year and he loved it. He is 7 now with over 50 turtles and still planting his "mornin glornies" as he calls them and I hope he keeps this up for many more years.

Oh there are so many, but as per usual I can only remember a few.. Claire used to say "prettyful" as in, "Don't I look prettyful today?" When she was 3 she would gently nudge you with a mean look on her face and say, "Did you like-a dat?" And when we would ask Annie to do something when she was 2 and a half she'd shout, "No! Never!" It was kind of hilarious although it never worked for her. She also called an elevator an "alligator" for a long time. Danielle

Oo, I have a story, well, I got lots, but here's one about what kids say. My youngest was a late talker compared to his brother and sister. They chattered away at a very early age, but not him. Even when he did talk he'd never use 2 words when one would do. Sometimes I even started to worry a little, but he understood everything that anyone said to him, so I figured he'd talk when he felt he had something to say. I used to take him for a daily walk unless the weather was really bad. This was one of his great pleasures. Of course, as winter nears, you start digging out their little hats, warm coats and mittens. On this particular day I couldn't find his mitts. I was hunting under chairs, in the bottom of the closet, up on the shelf, while he kept hopping from one foot to the other and trying to open the door. I kept explaining we'd go in a minute, as soon as I got his mittens on. He turned to me and said his first sentence. "Me no need no mittens!" I knew he'd talk when he had something to say!

Michele is going to be beating them off with sticks- those kids are so gorgeous! I will admit, I came home from work tired, dirty and not smelling so hot after working in the sun transplanting roses today. My youngest boy had cleaned the kitchen, taken out the laundry (started his own), had a plate of leftovers warming up for me. Bless him- I think I might keep him for another couple weeks. Trish

Well they don't have to be 5 years old to "say the darndest things". In late Spring, when I had lots of roses blooming, I was walking around the yard with my teenager daughters and at one point, one of them pointed at my beautiful Souvenir de la Malmaison blooms and announced "I don't like the POOFY ones!" To make it worse, her sister agreed! (it's a wonder I didn't fall down dead right there in the yard!) They both like the HT blooms and their favorite was the somewhat scrawny bloom of the scraggly Blue Skies that I have in a pot.

I'm hoping it's just a phase they are going through :)

I am happy that they like the HT flowers, I like them too - but to dismiss the POOFY ones - argh!

My daughter announced she likes 'pointy' rose petals and I don't have any, so why not? I don't like quilled rose blooms but apparently my 29 year old doesn't agree, I only get an 'It's OK for most of my roses' from her. Go figure. I loved the story of the five year old, it sounds just like my kids when they were young. They never went for the obvious even back then.
