EEK!! Look what the cat drug in..(warning...snake!)

Precious the puddy cat thought she was being so keen...bringing in her latest kill...I almost STEPPED on this thing...EEEK...it was dead...(thank you lord) but I'm still skeered of these things...I had a box in hand to scoop it up and my son came in...picked it up by its tail and threw it outside...Precious the cat was most preturbed...

this isn't a very good pic...i snapped it with my phone before the DS got downstairs...

This is the second time she's done this...she's a real hunter...snakes...bats...ghekkos...

I hope it wasn't poisonous. You're extra 'lucky'. I don't think I've ever seen a snake in early February. It's too cold for that here.

My son says it was a copperhead...but I don't know...we have lots of those here...their here year round and i use EXTREME caution when bringing in wood from the pile for our fireplace...I know snakes are venomous to dogs and snake babies give you all their venom...so obviously she's not gotten bitten yet...or maybe she's just too quick or has too much hair...

this is the last one she brought in last summer...i used the camera before I carried him out in a box...this picture shows him about actual size..he was maybe 6 or 7 inches long

needless to say I always wear shoes when in our yard and if I'm doing any kind of yard work i'm in heavy duty work boots...I got bit by some kind of snake several years ago...right on my inside ankle...it hurt like the dickens...and believe you me...I've worn heavy duty boots when working in the yard ever since...

this is the little hunter...all 9 pounds of her...LOL

susanjn--we had a similar experience. I pulled into our driveway a couple years ago, and a black cat with green eyes came running out of the garage. I rolled down my car window to yell out to DH who was working in the yard at the time. He said that Shizu was inside (he'd checked) and that this black cat had been hanging out with him most of the afternoon. She was very friendly and gorgeous (natch!). Turned out, our next-door-neighbor's daughter had returned home (hadn't even met her before) and had brought her cat and apparently she's an indoor/outdoor cat. I just saw her out in our back yard this morning, but don't usually see her very often. Still freaks me out when I do see her out there and I am compelled to check to make sure I can see Shizu somewhere in the house (my girls are indoor only).

Fyi - diy cat enclosures can cost only a couple of hundred if that, and obviously shade would have to be provided or outdoor time scheduled when the sun isn't blasting down full force. I built mine out of 10 10-foot metal poles (the thinner horizontal poles used for chain link, I set those into the ground vertically) and 100 feet of plastic mesh deer fencing. If you have an athletic cat you may need to rig mesh over the top somehow. Or you could build a space that is a combination cat pen and private walled garden space for the human residents to use too. Similarly, blocking off spaces within an open concept house may need some creativity - doors put up (do you have a basement)? BE CREATIVE. I was surprise when you said she's never been out. I thought you said she was one of these cats lives to go outside or maybe I read that into what you wrote. That does not bode well IMHO - it means she has no street smarts, she's being put out of a house that she's already feeling insecure about (dominators are often acting out of insecurity), and in an area where you've said you've seen predators hanging around your house. I appreciate that you're trying very hard to find the right place for this kitty, and I'm honestly not philosophically opposed to letting cats out ..... but I'm just not getting a good feeling about this. If it was a safe neighborhood, if you knew your neighbors and knew they were cat lovers, and you had a good long term relationship with the cat, knew she would come when called , and she wasn't having these territorial issues, that's one thing - but what you describe has a lot of red flags. I say that as someone with a cat that was lost - territorial issues according to lost pet websites is indeed a big reason why some take off, they perceive they are being pushed out of their environment. I think that may have been a factor in my cat's disappearance. There is a steep learning curve with outdoor cats - cars, avoiding dogs, predators, etc. - if they survive the learning curve then yes they can live many years (my 22 year old was proof of that) but... it's a big If. Many don't make it. I say all this as someone with a cat Figgy who has had aggression issues with my other cats. Its hard to love the aggressor and they do pick up on your feelings... which then makes them act out all the more. In my case I was yelling at him because he was being such an ass sometimes - jumping on and biting Orange if I was giving him attention, always intent on being top cat. Figgy disappeared for six weeks and it was only with a lot of effort I got him back. Now that Ive been showering him with love and attention his whole demeanor has changed. If Orange is sleeping by my head he no longer attacks, but just goes to sleep on the other side of me. Sometimes I have both cats purring together on my lap and we couldn't be happier! I know its more complicated having four cats - but the point is if you can find some way that you're happy with your cat, your cat is going to be happier too. Oh no - nausea! Pain, they have good drugs for. But nausea is just the worst... About 10 years ago I had an MS scare and the docs did a spinal tap to see what they could find. Well, the darn spinal tap puncture hole wouldn't seal up, leaving me with a 'spinal headache' for two whole weeks! The thing with a spinal headache is that you feel absolutely fine if you lie absolutely flat on your back. Bored stiff, but in no pain, no nausea. And you have about 30 seconds after you get up to run to the potty and back if you need to. But *after* 30 seconds of verticality, the nausea, dizziness and awfulness is overwhelming and *nothing* seems to relieve it. Hey Igloo - Since you're on drugs now, wanna design my addition? We could be in serious doo doo with the zoning folks and drugs may be the only solution...

All the money we spent on Peppermint oil over the years! Darn. Here I thought it was working and just above I thought maybe it was the construction on either side of us, but where were they getting in all of a sudden? Then it dawned on me that when we tore down the storage unit under the back deck last spring we found there were mice living in there. While hubby continued to work on removing everything in there, I went upstairs for some reason. Probably to wash up as I can only stand to feel so dirty before I have to scrub myself. When I came down I saw he had the basement french doors wide open. That may very well be when they got in. This weekend we'll get more mouse traps and set them up down there and hopefully that will get rid of the rest of them, if there are any left. I hope there aren't, but not taking that chance.

She is "a mighty hunter before the Lord!" LOL Give Precious a big hug from me.

We had a female cat when I was young. Living in northern Arkansas copperheads were a very real and dangerous presence.

"Samantha" would hunt, kill, and bring them to the kitchen door. Grandma always insisted on having a "good mother cat" around for snake control. Even though Sam was "fixed," the instinct to protect her property was strong.

OMG! Maybe my outdoor kitty kat will just have to stay a outdoor kitty kat. Yikes! We have Copperheads here too. I don't rake leaves until March and that is when they usually come out. They love to warm up under leaves.

You shoulda seen her the night she brought the bat in...It wasn't EVEN dead...she jumped about as high as the ceiling fan blades trying to catch it...I threw a blanket over my head and propped the door open and turned off all the lights so the bat would make it's way out the door...ANOTHER EEK!!! She makes for some pretty heart thumpin moments for me around here!!

Thanks spicey...she's a keeper...my son's friend gave her to us...she's a mutt but a real beauty and I just love her to pieces...Her mother was a long haired brown tabby type...who knows what the father was...

Caroline I'll include your hug on her nightly massaging tonight...i spoiled her by putting her in my lap when she was a baby and now every night it's a ritual!! (Oh but I wish I could be a cat for a couple of weeks and get some free massages...I have to pay for mine...LOL!)

Kat...I grew up on a farm...believe me I know the difference between an earthworm and a snake...but I'll include earthworms in the package...their just as slimy!!

I don't think that is a copperhead.Copperheads have a definite pattern.Scarry none the less!

I don't think it was a copperhead, either, the head wasn't triangular enough. It looks like a little brown snake, we find them here all the time, about the size of a good nightcrawler.

Ah, cats. Ours bring us way too many presents, too, Liz. We had a chipmunk in our bedroom a few years ago! And a flying squirrel in my closet, they bite! And 2 bats, that was exciting. Not to mention all the run of the mill stuff.....

In CA our cat brought us 2 snakes before we learned to keep the patio door shut while we were at work. One was a green grass snake, and the other a gopher snake. I did not want the third to be a rattlesnake. When she came to the patio door BEFORE I let her in, I would see if she had feet and tails in her mouth. Loved those lizards.

Oh ick. I just hate snakes. I really should not have opened this thread. I was warned! I tried to scroll really really fast, lol.

My Siamese loves to catch snakes. We get baby ones in our garage. Copperheads mostly. She always catches them.

I'm really glad I posted this...cause it puts my mind at ease a bit to know it's not poisonous...just creepy, slimy..LOL

She uses the doggie door..and when we're here it's always open so I can't stop her at the door...

Trishaw...I've actually gotten to the point where I can look at a picture and scoop it up in a box if I have too...but I'd really rather not have too...LOL

aren't they all just little stinkers...LOL? when she really wants my attention...she's been known to crawl right on top of the laptop and just look at me..she's usually not far away...right now she's in Dad's recliner and that's only cause she sits there to keep a dog out of it...LOL

I keep threatening to take a magic marker to her little milk mustache when she's bad...but that would be most of the time...LOL

My cat catches spiders in the house. I've seen her hop around when one gets one, then she "plays" with it a bit, and-finally-she eats it.

I grew up in the country and our Tom cat would bring snakes inside all the time. I remember the rattle snake very well. My mom calmly grabbed the shovel and scooped it outside where she proceeded to chop his head off with the sharp blade of the shovel.

I really wish I could be half as calm as she was around snakes. I loathe them.

Pretty kitty Liz. The story of the bat reminds me when we had the antiques mall in the school building, it was not unusual to be standing behind the register waiting on a customer in the evening and to see a bat swoop down from the up stairs and the customers would never notice. The bats were bad too about setting off the alarm at night and we would have to drive all the way into town and check things out. The police would always give us a call and go there. They were nice about it. Anyway glad the snake didn't bite anyone.
