You can use those Letra tag machines you can find at walmart with all kinds of labels. They come off easy.

well, if you don't want to be pretty, you can use painters tape! lol Painters tape and a sharpie!

Printer's tape does peel off if you do not leave it there too long. But the longer it stays, the more permanent it gets. It may not do that on glass, but on finished wood surfaces. it gets tighter every week it is left there until it won't peel off. Instead, it tears leaving some of itself behind.

Try "Removeable Labels" made by Avery. These are available at office supply stores. Make sure it has "Removeable" in the title, because these labels come in both flavors: removeable and permanent and each looks like the other.

Just last night, I removed such labels from a diskette box. Those labels had been on for 5 years and those came cleanly off. Admitdely, it took some patience to slowly peel the label off. I did have to pick at a corner to get it started, but it did come off without leaving any adhesive behind. I've haven't tried on glass canning jars, but it should work.

I saw a blog using chalk board paint for labels. And they now have erase board paint. Maybe not ideal with washing though.

I use masking tape and a Sharpie. Not as fancy as the Avery labels, but cheaper.

Do they still make freezer tape? That used to work good.

I think it was concluded that most people just use masking tape, some use freezer tape. I was hoping to find an actual label recommendation but wasn't successful. If I use DUCK brand masking tape and a sharpie, it stays on very well in the freezer and fridge, never loosens and falls off. What you can't do is stick it to an already cold dish, it won't stick. But if you don't mind the idea of a roll of tape and a sharpie, this works great. The tape comes off of the dish easily when you are done with it and doesn't leave an adhesive film. Just be sure to buy DUCK brand...or at least do not try the no name brand because it doesn't work so well. To me, it appeared that freezer tape was nothing more than an expensive roll of masking tape. I think the Duck brand is about $2 for a large roll and freezer tape is about $4 for half the size roll. Freezer tape is hard to find, you'll probably have to get it at some place like True Value or Ace Hardware.

I just finished cutting some chalkboard labels - they are SO cute! I have a personal cutting machine and I bought some chalkboard vinyl and a liquid chalkboard pen.

Even if you don't have a cutter, you can still make the labels by just cutting the with a scissors. I think there is even some Chalkboard contact paper out there.

I have been organizing my pantry so this is a timely subject :)

LOVE the half inch wide ordinary masking tape for this. EASY, EASY....I think regular width masking tape is too wide for most things. A roll of this stuff lasts me forever........ No need for scissors or anything, either.
