Painful Nipple Erections

Well just when I thought I had experienced everything associated with the 'change' as my mother put it, the last couple of days my nipples have been red, sore and sticking out like when you are cold. Then I had a very sharp pain that just shot throught my right nipple. It took my breath away. Had this pain a couple of times today.

Anyone know what this is, other than the ever encompassing Menopause symptoms.

I have heard of the shooting pains! But also heard those people had mammograms and they were negative. Let us hear back from you.

I go for my yearly mammogram in January, so I will tell them about the shooting pains, and will report back to this space.

I have definitely seen cats that are in heat AND pregnant. In fact that was my most fun diagnosis while on my emergency rotation. Dad and his 9 year old daughter brought in their cat because they thought she was in pain. She was in heat and VERY pregnant. Saved them an exam by the clinician and therefore $115. They were relieved that kitty wasn't deathly ill as they had thought, but very concerned about what to do about the pregnancy. Turns out, kitty took decisions out of their hands by having 4 kittens 2 days later (Dad let me know that I was right about the pregnancy and in heat diagnosis, since it was not confirmed by the ER clinician). I'm not sure at what stage in gestation I can palpate pregnancy in a cat. The couple of pregnant cats I've seen have been very pregnant, so it was almost a moot point even palpating them. I am volunteering for operation catnip tomorrow so hopefully I'll get an opportunity to palpate some of the females. I'm on the neuter table though, and it tends to be quite the assembly line; I'll probably neuter 20 cats in 4 hours myself if they can keep cats in front of me the whole time (usually I'm too fast for the PE/anesthesia line) and they'll be 3 other students on the neuter table with me. Groomingal-I have never worked for a vet that didn't personally do a physical exam prior to surgery. One vet I worked for accidently tried to spay a male cat until further investigation (in his defense the cat did look female). But they always do a PE prior to all surgeries. And we do euthanize viable litters. It is cruel just to allow them to die because they suffocate slowly. I absolutely agree that if the pregnancy is found prior to surgery, the owner should be called and given their options, and that is what the vets I have worked for have always done. That said, we don't do spays or neuters without a prior PE with the owner present, so that situation doesn't occur often. In other words, a client can't just drop off a patient we have never seen before for surgery- they have to be present for the initial exam in case something comes up, like a heart murmur or pregnancy or whatever. I don't know if my new job will have that as a hospital policy, but you can bet that I'll be doing PEs prior to surgery of any kind.

Yeah... this can be a real pain.... I need the brass nipples in 1/4" increments. Lately though I've been using a little different method depending on which one will work better. If the longer nipple is going to leave you too far off, use a little extra teflon and dope on the shorter one and send it home. If the longer one will make it but you're going to have to muscle it in there, this means you're going to risk damaging your tile or stone trying to get that last 1/4 turn or so- Especially since most of the time they leave a gasket with an area for silicone caulk beneath and that thing ends up sliding out of place. So, what I began doing a little while back was for the truly tight ones, use some painters tape to hold that gasket in place while sending that thing home with whatever safe form of wrench or screwdriver your able to insert in the supply ell. (taping across the entire backside of the gasket wrapping around the ell.) This gasket now acts more like a friction gasket keeping your brass from scratching the surface while putting some real muscle in to get it where you want it. 'But Steve! The gasket is to put silicone beneath and makes everything water tight!!!' More times than not that damn thing slides out with that silicone and sticks out by the time you get it cranked in to place- you end up cutting it and caulking around the outside anyway. This way, it serves in a different manner, you trim the tape back with a sharp razor until it can't be seen, and silicone caulk around the outside making the tape a non issue, and a benefit if you ever have to pull it out since it will still be there to keep you from scratching the surface again. Just my approach. Like I tell all my apprentices/helpers- see how I do it and every other mechanic at this company, then you figure out what works best for you.

Doodle, that is so beautiful. And you know? I can relate to what you said so much! I had the SAME feelings you did when I was PG with my DD. I had a weird, creepy feeling about BFing, and I was adamant I wasn't going to do it. My mom had nursed me for 13 months and my brother for 15, and she really pushed for me to try it, but I was completely turned off to the idea. When I delivered my DD, I didn't even put her to my breast (and that makes me sad.) The nurses brought me a bottle of formula and I gave that to her immediately. The next morning, the pediatrician came through to do rounds and examine my newborn DD. He calmly suggested I just give it a try. For some reason, the way he brought it up so matter of factly made me decide to at least TRY breastfeeding. So I did! It took some time to get her to latch on properly, and the nurses in the hospital were awesome! My milk came in a day or two later, and I wound up BFing my DD for 10 months! :) I am SO glad I gave it a chance! I think that picture is beautiful, Doodle.

So if it's just stretching tissue/muscle/ligaments, support will help it. Especially, if you're never without support (which was the point of my "sleeping" comment. Oops! Left that out). If it's an inflamed lymph node, you'd have get well from whatever would make it inflammed. Good point joanie. Any other symptoms you hadn't necessarily as being associated with this? For example, congestion, wheezing, sore back or painful breathing, might indicate pneumonia like joanie said. Why I asked if any medications alleviate any of the problem? It's how I realize, what might be wrong. When I had a broken bone, nothing would make it stop hurting. Nothing. Not pain relievers, ice, heat. NOTHING! So off to a doctor I went. It wasn't one of those obvious, fall and it hurts. It was a hairline fracture in a non-weight bearing bone. So, really, I couldn't figure it out. Usually, whatever helps, or doesn't, clues me in to what direction I can go to feel better. Like, if I can take a handful of Advil and my back quits hurting, it wasn't nerve stuff. Does anything put a dent in your pain level? I would think hormonal issues wouldn't be affected by pain relievers either.

I haven't had the shooting pains you mention, but over the past couple of years, have occasional tenderness and mild pain. I just chalk it up to hormone fluctuations, although I don't know for sure. My last mammogram about 18 months ago didn't show any signs of malignancy, so I haven't worried too much about it. It's just another one of those age-related quirks from what I can tell. :)

I haven't had the shooting pains, but the hard nipples for weeks on end. Very painful. I fantasize about a heated bra, because of course the rest of me is sweating.

A search of this forum turned up this thread -- and I am soooo thankful! At 50 with periods still going strong but very peri, I was about ready to take the butcher knife and hack off my nipples. Oh my GOSH! They hurt so bad that sometimes just my clothing hurts against them. Since it's both of them and no unusual "pain" other than this nipple tenderness, I felt sure it was hormones but I'm grateful to hear others say the same thing.

Glad I found the GW menopause forum. The thought of what might turn up if I Googled "tender nipples" was scary. :-)

Ladies, Just as a follow up. I just had a mammogram and told them about my shooting pains and sore nipples. They could not offer anything concrete, other than hormone fluxuations.
The mammo was clear, thank goodness.

Maybe it's swollen because it's irritated or infected. Better to have it checked by your doctor.

I don't have pain, but my nipples are always erect. Occasionally I will see a drop of liquid from one side. I see my gynecologist regularly and get a mammogram every January.

I've had that once and my breasts were super sensitive, the cat stepped on one of my breasts and I dang near came out of the chair. Funny enough after about 4 months without a period, mine started and the pain and soreness went away.

I am 38 and believe I am going through menopause at this early age. I haven't had a period in 5 months. For the past 3 months both of my nipples have been constantly erect, dry, with that shooting sensation for months! It happens especially when I take a shower and when I am drying off afterward. The only relief I have is putting on my bra right away. It's very painful :-(
