Dry Eyes

Several weeks ago there was a thread on this forum discussing dry eyes in relation to menopause. I recall a suggestion (tongue in cheek I hope) that someone night ask for a prescription for estrogen in some kind of eye medication to relieve this problem.

A recent study in the JAMA (Nov 7/01) suggests that women using combined hormones have a 27% higher rate of problems with dry eyes than women who do not use these drugs. For estrogen alone the rate increased by 69% over no drugs at all. The risk increased with the length of time the drug(s) is/are used. The study involved some 25000 women over a 4 year period. It was funded by Allergan, a company which makes eye drops to treat dry eyes. The abstract is available at http://jama.ama-assn.org/

Thanks, Leigh, for finding this paper and bringing it to our attention. I've had a chance to read the whole paper, and it looks like a solid piece of research.

The study found that serious problems with dry eyes (either 'severe symptoms' or clinically-diagnosed dry eye syndrome) occur in about 6% of older women not taking any HRT, in about 7% of women taking estrogen plus progesterone, and in about 9% of women taking estrogen without progesterone. Because the study included so many women (about 25,000), these differences are statistically significant.

But for individual women the implications are minor. Most women don't have serious problems with dry eyes, whether they take HRT or not. If you are one of the minority that do, and are not taking HRT, taking HRT won't make the problem better, and taking estrogen alone might make it worse. If you have problems with dry eyes and are taking estrogen and progesterone, stopping HRT is unlikely to make them better, though it won't make them worse. If you have problems with dry eyes and are taking estrogen alone, adding progesterone or stopping estrogen might make them better, but it is more likely to make no difference.

Some place I read that Biotin helps with dry eyes. I've been taking it since being diagnosed and it has helped a lot. No more blocked glands and swollen eyes. For a while there people were trying to roll me over and flip me back into the Koi pond.

I tried to blame my severe dry eyes on menopause and the loss of estrogen, but my eye dr. just said he it happens in young women as well. It did go away after 6 months and hasnt come back. But I dont wear my contacts anymore either.

MY GYN TOLD ME NAUSEA AND DIZZINESS AND SOME OF THE OTHER SYMPTOMS WERE NOT PART OF THE CHANGE OF LIFE .BUT BLOOD TEST PROVED MY ESTROGEN WAS LOW BUT SHE TOOK THE SAME STANCE .I HAD TO GO TO A GASTRO DOCTOR ,ENT AND ALLERGIST NO ONE COULD COME UP WITH AN ANSWER FOR ME .BUT READING THE POSTINGS ON MENOPAUSE I KNOW NOW THAT I AM GOING THRU THE CHANGE OF LIFE MANY PEOPLE HAVE ALL THE SYMPTOMS I HAVE .I AM FINDING MYSELF A NEW GYN .

I worked in the profession, so no, I trust them, but I also know in my area, vets are far too willing to be a second hand to the pharmaceutical companies and proscribe meds before really trying to work out every possibility. The vet wanted to put the cat on anti depressants - pretty heavy duty for a 8 month old cat. Not my idea of trying to work out other possibilities. I recommended the owner change cat food - Since grains, corn and chicken are the top allergens and can cause behavioral changes like excessive scratching. BINGO, that was the fix needed, tho we are keeping an eye on the cat. It isnt that I dont trust the profession, I use to work in it, but I have intutition about certain things and tend to try to want to find answers that dont involve spending lots of money on meds that are very powerful and can create issues in side effects that are often more troublesome than the "cure"

Since you've already seen all the necessary doctors (which I, too, was going to recommend) I will say that I use Systane Ultra and find it helps the best (tried others) particularly for burning. When my dry eyes flare up, I become very sensitive to light and my eyes burn. If it's really bad at night, use the gel but it's only recommended as you are getting ready for bed because it will blur your vision. If I get up during the night (which is pretty much daily) I have difficulty opening my eyes. The Opthamologist said the eyeball is literally sticking to the eyelid and do not try to force the eyes open because you can tear the retina. I massage the eyelids with my fingertips for a couple of seconds which spreads whatever moisture around and the eyes open easily.
