Yes. I am not sure about the blue toned part, tho I guess so since it isn't an orange kinda red. It is a very deep dark red usually.

I also believe garnet is a red with blue undertones. It's not an orangy red.

Like the other posters with varying tint strengths for a garnet, yes it would lean toward a blue. It would be made up from one of the clear organic reds with a clear Phthalo. The lightfastness and color clarity would be excellent .

The interesting thing is that garnets, the actual stones, have a touch of brown in them. They really are not a blue red at all.

This brings me to my next point....that is that the words we use to describe color are subjective and therefore not reliable. Beware the semantics of color! We all see color differently and use different words to describe what we see. (I see an orange school bus and you see a yellow school bus.)

I seem to recall you are looking for something burgundy, right? I suppose you think that by looking for the word Garnet, maybe you'll find the perfect color. It is true that maybe googling "garnet" will open up some new possibilities, but there is no guarantee that what some retailer calls Garnet will be what you want.

These are a bit pricey, but here's something that looks blue-red to me in a color called Claret. (Another possible term to google!) Good luck. I feel you pain. I am looking for pale orchid or grayed-down lavender bedding and it ain't easy.

thanks amysrq, I am looking for a burgandy coverlet. It is so hard ordering off the internet. I found this at Restoration Hardware, color is called garnet, looks right to me but I am hesitate to order. What do you think? If you click on the garnet color, the pictures shows garnet.

I called Restoration Hardware, the guy said the garnet color in person is more a red than a burgandy, so I am not going to order it....ughhhhh.

The thing is....what does the guy at RH know from color, semantics, what things may look like to you, etc? Lots of men are color-blind! I think the only solution is to go look for a coverlet in person, or try to order from a company that will send you swatches. Or, you could find fabric you like and have the thing custom-made.

Otherwise, if this is so important, you just need to start ordering and figure the cost of shipping and possible returns into the overall cost of decorating this room. You can minimize your exposure by buying pillowcases or shams which will be cheaper to ship back.

I don't remember the backstory for this guest room, but I am just wondering if there is another color that might work or if maybe a not-quite-burgundy coverlet would be acceptable.

IME, sometimes you can get away with not matching colors exactly...the eye makes up the difference, kind of interpolates, to give the sense of a match. This does not work with large bodies of color, but often when someone is trying to pull a color from a rug, for example.

JC Penneys has a matelasse in merlot which is probably more the color you're looking for. I comes in a coverlet or a bedspread. I have the coverlet and really like it. Hope this helps.

This is the olive chair and gold/burgandy area rug I have in the room. The wall color is not correct, the spot in the hallway is the taupe color of the wall. I think
burgany or the right red would look the best. You think the garnet color would be ok, so it doesnt read Christmas>

Oh, so it is a rug!

Rugs are just an example I like to use. People want to paint the walls "that same blue" that's in the oriental carpet. Well, that blue will look like hell on the walls! But, if you find a happy wall blue, close enough is good enough for the rug, IMO. I mean, you can't go from cobalt to teal, but you can go from turquoise in the rug to Palladian Blue on the wall. Get it?

So, yes, I think you are driving yourself crazy with this and even if the coverlet veers toward red, your room will not look Christmas-y. I put green and red together in my last house quite successfully, and believe me, the last thing I want is decor that suggests Christmas!

I think finding a beautiful, well-made coverlet will make more of a difference than finding just the right shade of red. I'm just about certain that the RH will be a very classy thing and would be beautiful in your guest room. Better that than some cheap thing from wherever-you-finally-find-it that matched just right.

I'm so glad amy stopped by and provided such fabulous advice and information! She's so right about the semantics of color names. Definitely don't get too wrapped around the word "garnet" who the hell knows what it could mean.

Just have to get the thing that is labeled "garnet" and see what it looks like. Whether it's a paint color, a duvet, dishes, a shirt -- whatever. In the most ideal situation, a color name will give us an initial clue as to what a paint color or fabric color will look like. Usually the only thing you can take away from a color name is a notion of "hue". To know the actual "color" you have to get a hold of it and look at it.

I'm in love with that chair, rose. It's pretty and it's elegant. The rug is lovely too. I can see that RH duvet working with the chair and rug.

It's also called garnet and I just matched it to the burgundy in my rug. It's a good match and won't read Christmas at all. I also had difficulty finding pillows, etc as accents with my Raspberry Truffle dining room. Many of the colors were too red and some were too burgundy. I found RH colors to be the truest and easiest to work with. If the one you ordered doesn't work out, I wouldn't hesitate to order the one from RH. They don't use Christmas red colors.
