Good Morning

Is anyone out there in the world of menopause using Pro Gest?

I take Remifemin and now would like to try a progesterone cream and have read that Pro Gest is very good and very safe, and can help you sleep more soundly. I would really appreciate any information anyone would have. Thank you

Hi Lou, I used ProGest for over a year before switching to a prescription progesterone cream. Within a few days of use I was sleeping through the night for the first time in years and hot flashes began to subside. After six months my brain fog began to clear and I was able to concentrate and read again for the first time in about 3 years. I like the texture and scent of ProGest better than other brands that I tried. I still use it ocassionally for a face moisturizer and would be using it daily if my doctor had not cooperated with a prescription for a progesterone cream. Although the prescription cream is more concentrated and I use less, the dose is the same: 20 to 25 mg. per day.

Thanks Anifani4! I will be talking with my doctor next week and hope she will cooperate too. If not I will try the the progest cream. Did you use it 20 days on and one week off? Do most GYN's believe in this progesterone cream? I am really interested in trying it. I can't keep taking tylenol pm for sleep each night! Thank you. Lou

Unfortunately, I agree w/auntjen. My family has doctors in it back several generations (including one ancestor who treated people in both the Union and Confederate armies, believing that people are people no matter what), but they'd all be spinning in their graves/urns to see what's become of "medicine" and associated industries today. Big pharma doesn't feel it really has to "prove anything with science", either, as evidenced by the rampant cheating, misreporting, ignoring side effect reporting, balancing how many lives they can lose before the damages payments become overwhelming, before they have to do a recall, etc. Or maybe they feel the right to prove anything they want with 'science', is another way to look at it. Basically, as auntjen said, profit conquers all. Kind of funny to be warning against alternatives when some big pharma products have *just above* been revealed to be horrendous and decptively advertised. If I had waited for conventional medicine to address my hormonal issues adequately, I'd probably be in a mental hospital by now. Geting a friend's mom's reference to Emerita pro-gest when I was about 40 was the best medical thing to happen to me next to having cancerous moles taken off and a heart attack stopped with incredibly high levels of nitroglycerine. OH, and last month my pharmacy which has known me for about 5 years once again messed up my prescription for something I take every day, giving me a yet-cheaper generic rather than the somewhat-less-cheap generic they had been giving me before, even though I've told them every single month to order the somewhat-less-cheap one for me because the yet-cheaper one just *doesn't work*. Did I check this last month? NO, because I was harried and I guess I trusted them. I know them all by first name, one mom's daughter is on my daughter's XC team...but I was miserable for a MONTH because of human error in mainstream medicine, and because the so called generic "identical" meds, with loads of "science" stats behind them, are anything but. I don't trust any of it anymore.

Doctors, whether promoting alternative treatments or prescribed medications, are subject to propaganda and are well paid by the corporate companies. I would guess less so by the alternative manufacturers since they don't have the millions of dollars to spend. But as the consumer we have to go with our educated guesses. I have resisted hrt after a hysterectomy (uterus, ovaries, cervix) although my oncologist offers it every time I see him. Even though my cancer was estrogen receptive and my mother had breast cancer. And my symptoms are very mild infrequent hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Since he is one of the best gyn oncologists in NYC I trust him for the oncology side but use my endocrinologist for hrt consultations - tomorrow we review a recent bone scan. And by the way - Replens seems to work well for the vaginal dryness and is cheapest at Walmart.

I can't believe I had to Google what I did to get here. I'm assuming I am post menopausal. I haven't had a period for almost 10 years but when I was tested is was not menopause. Btw I am 51. I can't remember what it was but a few doses of estrogen started it again but only for couple months I repeated that regimine twice before just not doing it. I liked not having a period. Fast forward 10 years I am now there however I have not had sex of any kind for 18 years. Last year I finally went into hiding from an abusive husband to whom I refused sex to for the beatings. I left him several times during my marriage but the criminal justice system let me down. He has never spent a day in jail for his crimes against me. I can't tell you what it would feel like to sit in a courtroom and hear the judge order him to anger management classes again. Which cost $50 a week so he would be waiting outside the courtroom when I would leave he would walk up and put his arm around me and tell me how bad I was gonna hurt for costing him that money. I am free now and I am suffering the worst case of horniness imaginable. I can't get anything to work and I am in tears. I don't want a man with what I have been through I just want it to stop. I am doing things in my sleep. I have to keep my nails cut off. I was in the women's shelter for abused women before getting on my feet but I can't afford doctors anymore. I left with nothing to escape it including health insurance and I walk with a limp and my face is scarred with a cheap snap on smile for the broken teeth so this is something I cannot understand and I do think men know. I assure I don't flirt or dress provactively but I am hit on all the time. My only urge is to cut their penis off and take it with me. I sure don't want the rest of them. I'm not functioning well and I have had more serious medical issues that I did get to see a doctor for those things and yes I mentioned it. For my other medical issuers the doctor said no hormones that I should give into it that it was the healthiest thing to do. What kind of crap is that? He knew what happened to me Because he stitched me up enough. He wrote a letter to the court but nothing put my husband in jail. He gave my mother a heart attack on Christmas day. He terrorized my family. So I just can't let a man touch me so I am begging to know what there is that I can do. I'm sure it would be a blessing if I had had a good man . it's too late for that now

Hi Puff, I too started once with the pro-gest. The few doctors I have talked to about it say you cant rub enough in to really do any good. I am not sure about that. I do think the balance is the key. Doesnt it say on the tube to start with a small amount and work up? Are you using the highest dose on the label. I am just impressed that you have a dr. that will do blood work and think it is actually accurate. Usually the MD;s just dont go there. Keep staying the course, if you think it was working, then dont let the blood work (which may flucuate greatly at different times of the day) change how you feel about the results you were having... When it comes to this time of our lives, how we feel is has got to be our yardstick in which we measure.things. Even hormones replacement therapy doesnt work ALL the time. so dont expect the progest to straighten it all out all the time. Make sure you are rubbing it in a different area every day. I'd venture to say most gyns do not "believe" in the otc progesterone cream: evidence use of the words yam scam and other negative attitudes by the western medical profession. Dr. John Lee, the biggest proponent of natural progesterone cream, is profiting from a theory that was never proven scientifically - a no no as far as medicine is concerned. Since he is an MD, I have always been puzzled by his apparent lack of interest in proper research for his theory. Still, I gained some insight from his writing, and had a strong feeling that progesterone was what I needed. Turned out to be right, fortunately for me. But I don't believe it is the panacea that he claims.

When I started with ProGest I used 1/4 tsp twice a day for two months straight. I gradually cut back on the dose to once a day. Some months I took a 5 day break, others I felt so bad after a day or two without the progesterone that I went back on it. Now I take a 3 to 5 day break every 6 weeks or so. I can not explain how I "know" when to do it. Some inner wisdom lets me know how much to use and when to stop.

Hi Ani and thank you.
I really want to try the cream, and will give my gyn a chance to say here is one I like, but if that does not happen, I will try Pro Gest. Can you buy that at a vitamin shop such gnc or do you have to order it. Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it. Lou

Dr. Lee got his information from Raymond Peat, PhD Yes it is proven every day in Dr. Lee's practice (and other sensible MDs, DOs and Naturopaths)and in women who see the common sense in the biology and research and try it on their own.

The pharmaceutical companies cannot have monopoly on natural progesterone, so synthetics is their money maker.
