Almost ready for the Fair

I actually have a few things that I am planning to enter this year. The ones I am definitely taking up to enter are:

Peach Ginger Jam

Habanero Gold

Peach Melba Jam (entered as a Raspberry Peach Jam)

Flo sauce (entered as an onion relish)

The others that will not be entered because of the limit of 1 entry per class are:

Peach Rum Brown Sugar

Mango Raspberry

Peach Tuaca

Christmas Chutney

All in all it has been a really fun couple of weeks and I am still trying to figure out if I can get a batch of Annie's Salsa done in time or if I am just going to try making a batch for us.

Thank you to ALL the posters who answered questions, provided recipes, offered encouragement and were just there to hold my hand when I needed it! You are the best!

It drapes easily and is sturdy enough so that wind can blow and the netting moves with the wind. I used two pieces about 15' x 30' and cross draped it over the tree and wrapped it around the bottom of the tree right under the branches. I can already tell it will be easy to remove. I'll store the nets in a large garbage bag over the winter to use again next year. I'm about to buy ten more next spring; Its great. Mrs. G

Thank you, Dan. The soil and water are both alkaline. I try to follow the practice recommended by many people on this forum, but often I let things slip. Generally I fertilize with Osmocote Plus (2 or 3 times a year) and spray with Dyna Pro Folia spray occasionally maybe once a month. I make sure to control ants (Tanglefoot), but I'm losing the battle against leaf miner on all my citrus trees, We are in HLB (citrus greening) quarantine area so we watch our trees very closely.

Four years and two babies later…the kitchen is finally (almost) ready

Thank you all! For the tile lovers, there is a story behind it. I always had a strong vision for this kitchen, and part of the vision was the absence of upper cabinets and a wall of statement tile. I am obsessed with Moroccan mosaics, but when I priced them out, the real mosaic, i.e. the pattern made up of actual small pieces of tile, was prohibitively expensive. Lookalike tiles produced here that are just a stamp of the pattern on tile were cheap but looked cheap, the printed pattern began to peel off in a very short time. The tile I ended up with, I first found online here at like $30 PER TILE. And I was ready to buy it! My DH, though, who is of Arab extraction and very wily, saw the stamp on the back of the tile that read "Doremail" in Arabic, and told me to look for the factory online first. Lo and behold, not only is this factory online, but when I wrote to them, they were perfectly pleasant and professional. We bought this tile https://doremail.com/en/andalusian-tiles/719-sevilla.html and this tile https://doremail.com/en/oriental-tiles/895-fares.html 150 sqft airlifted to Dulles airport was only $1,500, which is basically the price of midrange Home Depot tile! And there are so many other gorgeous options. So very happy to give them the plug. Re: breakfast nook, I wanted to buy specifically from the restaurant supplier because the benches/booths you get in regular furniture stores are not designed with the same level of quality and detail. People who make furniture for restaurants understand that the goal is to make the customer so comfortable in the chair that he/she will want to sit there for a long time and order more. So if you look at your standard diner booth, you'll see that it is angled in the seat, in the back, in the shin area, and that makes it much more comfortable than your standard 90-degree angle bench you buy in "regular people" furniture stores. And it's not THAT much more expensive, and you can get it made to custom size very easily because they are used to it. I mean, try telling Wayfair: "oh, this one is fine but can you make it in gray and four inches longer".

Oh now that's fun!

Alexa you really need my Chile Sauce recipe..it's a huge winner and very different from anything I have ever seen in the States. Could be signature......

It's a sweet/tart tomato relish sorta....no idea why they call it Chile sauce.....ain't no chili in it!

Which reminds, me, Sharon, that I need your Chile sauce recipe. I had it and lost it in the big computer disaster. Sigh.

It makes a magnificent sloppy joe, used in place of sloppy joe sauce! Yeah, I'm serious....

Nice looking canned goods, Alexa, good luck at the fair. Life got away from me again this year and I never did manage to get anything entered on time. Ah well, there's next year.

Pam, it is Middletown Grange (Aug 18 - Aug 22) in Wrightstown off 413. The entries need to be there on Aug 16th, so I have a few more days to possibly put something together. Sharon - I would love your Chili Sauce recipe! Like Annies Salsa, I cant guarantee I will get it done in time to enter, but I would love to have it for us.

Oh, and this is the first time I am entering anything of this sort, so I have no idea if these will be competative or not. LOL!

Wow! Alexa you have been busy! Best wishes at the fair. There is nothing more down home then a country fair. We hit the Big E in West Springfield, Mass., every other year. I love seeing all the home made goods. Food, quilts, flowers, you name it it is there. Good luck with your entries. NancyLouise

Gorgeous...my judges would go nuts over those. Do they taste the entries at your fair?

Our fair is in two weeks. I'll enter a couple of jars, but people don't want to compete against me because I teach canning classes,lol. I don't get that many ribbons....always safe, never pretty. We just did a foods preservation series, so I'm hoping our 'students' will enter lots.

Oh, your jars of goodies look so good. I didn't get anything into the canning classes at our county fair because I missed the deadline. However, I got two second prizes in the pie contest. Hope yours are all 1st place blue ribbons.

Yes, Katie they open everything and taste it, so hopefully my being a little adventurous will pay off and not backfire! LOL I will certainly keep everyone posted

The fair sounds like so much fun! I love fairs (the displays part, not all the goofy rides!)
