Well, looks like it will really be happening. My contractor is coming to take out the cabinets & stuff on Tuesday and we're off and running. I am emptying the junk drawers and pantry, but am leaving Friday to teach a weekend workshop and won't be back till Sunday night.

My Elkay 28" stainless sink, Caldera 30" range top, and Doulton water filtration system & faucet are sitting in the livingroom. I called Doulton and they told me I needed only one filter because I have municipal water. I paid a bit extra for the high capacity one (he laughed because there are only 2 of us and this is meant for offices with 5-50 people)-- but it fills at the rate of 1.4 gal/min instead of a half gal/min. I can't stand the slow filling of a pot, so I hope this will be better.

I need to order my appliances tomorrow, since they need about a week.

I don't have my kitchen faucet, ordered 2 wks ago from Chicago Faucet. They are still waiting on KWC and hopefully, will send it out at the end of this week. When I mumbled about the time lag, they said "this is why our prices are so low." I knew the faucet wasn't in stock, but this is ridiculous. Nonetheless, I am saving $150 over the lowest price I found elsewhere, so we will see.

If all the cabinets are perfect (is there any such thing?) we should be done for the most part, in a couple of weeks.

I still need to pick pendants and let the electrician get under cabinet fluorescent skinnies.

Still undecided about powder room faucet - I'm down to these 3. (yeah, I know this belongs on the bathroom forum - but oh, well, I may post over there, too).

I love this one best - it looks like a piece of sculpture to me.

DH likes this one best but I can't get excited about it. On the other hand, do I NEED to be excited about a powder room faucet?

This one is either a good compromise or a camel designed by a committee. Dunno. Haven't seen any of them in person.

YES, you do need to get excited about a powder room faucet! (You didn't ask, but I'd like to second your choice of the first faucet.)

I am really excited about your upcoming kitchen -- congratulations and have a good weekend away at your workshop!

Thanks to both of you for your help and reassurance. This is our hall bathroom, only tub. We need it for bathing kids and (when I can grab a free moment) me, but it's also a shower. So the Toto medium depth is ideal. As it turned out, Toto had a bunch of these tubs in stock, but my vendor's distributor was waiting for enough orders to fill a truck before Toto shipped. Too bad I wasn't told about that over a month ago when I placed the order! There's apparently no chance they would get that truck full in order for me to get my tub early next week. Thanks to dedtired, I looked at Faucet Direct, and they had our Toto model in stock! I purchased it early Wednesday afternoon, with the help of the friendliest salesperson I've dealt with in the entire remodel. He called the warehouse, confirmed that Faucet Direct would load it on a truck that same day. The warehouse then contacted the trucking company, which said that the tub would arrive with me Tuesday or Wednesday. The Faucet Direct guy also gave me his direct line so I could call today and Monday to find out where the truck is on route. And keep in mind that all of this is during a holiday long weekend. I'm really hopeful that we will avoid the Villager!

Ohmygosh, how fast the time has flown since I posted my question...non-stop prep for the demolition which began this morning. I'm not really completely done but so tired from three days of packing that I finally got on the pc and see I've been AWOL! Thanks so much for your responses. Laurie, I did check the FKB...spent a couple of hours searching it before I posted...it was that search which led to my question about ORB on dark countertops... Raehelen and kitchendetective, the reason I am switching to inward-opening casements is because I think the handles that wind to open and close the windows would look too modern in my house and because the windows will now have countertop in front of them and I won't be able to reach the outward-opening windows to close them. Actually, the inward-opening windows are in a place where there is not much of an issue with disturbing anything on the counter and they do come with parliament hinges which allows them to open 180 degrees--I don't really need them to open that far but at least they'll open past the point at which they would just jut into the room. As for the ORB, we've had a "vision" session with our consulting KD and have decided to go with it. Unfortunately, we've fallen in love with the most expensive countertop we've seen, Verde Antique! It wouldn't be so bad except that it costs $1000 to ship to California...so I think we will resume the green soapstone search... I found my George Forman grill invaluable for cooking;; with a toaster oven, microwave, and casserole style crockpot we have managed just fine and really have eaten out very little. We do tend to eat simply, though. Pasta got cooked by a combination of MW and crockpot. I have even baked, just making half recipes to fit into the toaster oven. DD is the only coffee drinker, so she just set up the pot on a small table in her bedroom. Ellen1234 raised a very good warning, that I wish I had thought of. At least, buy cheap light plastic dropcloths and painter's tape, and cover your blinds/drapes/upholstered furniture during any demolition and sanding. The amount of dust raised is astonishing, and it seems that the care taken to control it can really vary from crew to crew (for me, the demolition and drywall was a dust disaster (even though the drywaller taped off the kitchen), while the floor sanding was pretty painless). Even stuff in the basement got covered in dust. A small inexpensive shop vac is useful for clean-up, with a drywall filter in it -- so you won't risk damaging your good vacuum.

At AZ School of Rock, we teach new Fabricators to plan in extra time to cover for "glitches" - that way, IF there are no delays, they can serve the customers sooner and everybody is happy. The "turn-around" time is going to vary due to a number of "variables", and unfortunately, this is the busiest time of the year for countertop Fabricators. IF all of your variables are like "ducks in a row" ie: "When the Moon is in the seventh hous and Jupiter is aligned with Mars" (showing my age here...), Then and ONLY then, you will have a shot at getting your project done in "Rapido-Speedo" mode. OTHERWISE be prepared for a longer turnaround time. Unfortunately - People have selective hearing when it comes to dates quoted by Contractors - The Contractor wants to be the hero, and says "Well, it could take anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks" Translation heard by the customer: "It WILL take ONLY 1 WEEK".... AND, to make matters worse, the Contractor will many times SAY that it will take a shorter amount of time, when he KNOWS that this will only happen if PIGS FLY... See what I mean - it's a battle, and many times, the collateral damage is that the Customer gets inconvenienced by a longer wait because of any number of reasons. In short, there's no real Golden Answer to your question, other than "expect the worst, but hope for the best" - when it comes to meeting deadlines. Remember... You are NOT your Fabricator's ONLY customer, Likewise - and I always try to remember this..... If I don't TREAT YOU like YOU are MY ONLY Customer, then...You'll probably be MY LAST ONE!!! This is what we teach new Fabricators at AZ School of Rock... Ooh, I'm so excited for you, Raynag! (Don't get too far ahead, leaving your ole friend in the kitchen demo dust though. L0L!) By all means, go for faucet #1. There's no question that's the one.

Marthavila - I was thinking of you as I was writing this last night. Don't worry - you're already ahead of me (I think). Just a few adjustments to make, right?

Jamjam - perfectionist? MOI? heaven forbid!But I know what I like when I see it.

Cleaning out the junk drawers (of which there are many) is a bear! How can I part with the use and care booklets for appliances I no longer own? I still have the booklet from my mother's first dishwasher: a Hobart KitchenAid 1952 model that probably cleaned better than anything they make today.

Uh - make that Wednesday. My contractor called today to say his truck is in the shop. But at least he gave me a heads-up, and truthfully, as thrilled as I was, I can use the extra day.

I love faucet number 1. Number 3 is a good compromise. The lines of the base shaft are better.

Yep - Faucet #1 is on its way -- I need a piece of sculpture in my powder room - LOL. I wasn't in the mood for compromise, I was in the mood for whimsical. It makes me smile. I agree #3 would have been just fine: a little more delicate, a little less expensive - but what a shame,it wasn't in stock and #1 was.

WVhippiechick - I expect a few bumps in the road, but I don't care at this point. At least I'll have cabinet doors that close, a faucet that doesn't leak, a floor that won't be dirty 3 minutes after it's been washed, an oven that works, and a fridge that doesn't rot the food. I'll take plenty of pix and keep you all posted. Love that soapstone!

Well, did the demo get started or what? C'mon now. You know you must share the blow by blow (yes, pun intended)!

I'm chuckling when you say that I have "just a few adjustments." I wish! The designer is coming by tomorrow with new plans. From the draft he emailed me tonight, it looks like my old base cabs are gone! Uppers and pantry must be pulled and reconfigured. Range is being installed on the opposite of the kitchen, so new gas line. Plus, I'm installing new 240 elec line for the range, hood and ductwork. And, that's only for starters. I'm sure I'll be dropping by your fab new kitchen for brunch way before you get to mine. LOL!

Way to go on the faucet!
