Last year was my first year to get dirt under my nails in WCentral TX. - The most expensive mistake was planting a full afternoon sun front bed of approx 15 1-3g shrubs in the middle of June. I thought that watering them every day would help, so they either fried or I drowned them or a combo of both. - Not remembering that quite a few things were perennials and throwing them away once they started to fade - Not realizing what sq feet equals, I was still used to metric. So my little patch of wildflower seed I sowed in the fall really should've been spread out a bit more, okay a lot more. - Just because the garden center sells it, doesn't mean A) that it will 'work' here B) that it is the correct time to plant it

I read in one of the farming books I have that in a good climate (and we qualify, though Minnesota doesn't), a person could raise enough food to supply every single meal for a family of four on an acre. This requires two growing seasons and that you mainly raise grains. Another book I have says that standard US agricultural practices produce about 2000 loaves of bread per acre or 35 bushels of wheat. For standard bread that's 1200-1500 calories per one pound loaf. One loaf (or equivalent) per day for each of four people... 4x365 = 1460. That leaves space left over to raise herbs and truck. It's not a high standard of living, but you could do it. I could do it. I own one acre. But I have a big house on part of it and a driveway. Those would detract. I found an internet site about all the food a family raised on 1/10th of an acre and I found it amusing their harvest report was six years after starting the garden. It's like when I was reading Ruth Stout's book and she said that after 10-20 years her garden did this or that. Ha! Yes, after years of effort, you get the soil right and it is wonderful stuff. I don't think most folk new to gardening understand that it will be years before they get a really good bumper crop. I'm very happy with how well my garden has done this year and I credit the dump trailer loads of soil amendments. I'm going to pop out to Wal-Mart and get some corn chips to enjoy my fresh salsa with. While I'm there I'll check their magazine rack for Urban Farm. I might even try to scrape up the money to subscribe. It sounds awesome!

I had the same thing happen. I now have a ruined antique window. I contacted Krylon and hope that they will at least send me a replacement can. The paint did nothing but fog the glass and the can was empty almost immediately. I feel ripped off. It seems as though it's really a gamble on whether or not you will get a good can. I would recommend just buying mirror glass whenever possible and only gamble on the paint for projects where you have no other choice.

Aha! Using the Love it Or Hate It on the right side of the screen to point out specifics, I came out to what I *think* is my style - or would like to be if I had the $$. I'm 86% Arts and Crafts "You tend to prefer simple to ornate and natural materials over man-made. Warm tones found in wood and brass make you feel comfortable, and good craftsmanship excites you like nothing else. You enjoy patterns that highlight our natural surroundings such as plants and trees. You prefer rectilinear forms and straight lines, however you love to find intricate details (ooooh, stained glass!) where you least expect it." Especially since it seems like I don't like WTs at all! And I've bought very ornate patterned (though tone-on-tone) drapes for LR and DR thinking they were my "formal" rooms so should have heavy drapes, plus I want to screen out strong light not to change color of BC floor and leather sofa. Maybe they'll look OK hung high on simple rods, no valance (at least in LR)? 14% "French Eclectic"? Never thought of that, though I do like fine antiques, I'm not really comfortable with them in my house. But the part about "French Eclectic somehow manages to be both formal and casual, classy and unassuming at the same time. You like your spaces to feel inviting from the moment you (or your guest) opens the front door and this feeling should continue even after you've entered your most formal room...the rustic country elements provide a balance and warmth that seems to say, "come in, relax and stay a while." Your love of antiques leads you to flea markets, garage sales and hours of eBay hunting." is right on!

I just bought a $7 jar of fig preserves this weekend and WAS enjoying it. Does this mean that if you eat dried figs there's a good chance that there's a whole wasp inside?

I got them all correct...probably because every time I get an email from someone, I "snopes" it and---if it isn't true---I send it back to them.

Oh - 10/10!

I have to admit - I probably would have gotten the Fig Newton one wrong if I hadn't read the "spoilers", LOL!

I am sure we eat lots of bugs in our cereal and flour. What I dont' know doesn't bother me ... la la la la la - :)

The coffee one - was in the last Jack Nicholson movie. I had never heard of it before that show.

I got 8 out of 10.

When I was a kid I loved Fig Newtons. That was until my wretched older brother told me that the little seed were actually maggots. I never ate another one after that, and still haven't to this day. Ack. Now I think I'm glad about that!!!!

Well, I don't know if I can eat fig newtons ever again, although we do eat quite a few bugs on a regular basis. The thing is, if I don't know I'm eating a bug or a bug part that's one thing - to know there are wasp parts in a fig newton...hmmm.
I didn't do very well on the quiz, only got 4 right, but I tend to believe in things like ghosts and unexplainables...
something to think about --

Basically one just has to read the question and gauge if it "makes sense". Bugs in food - yes. Poor judgment demonstrating windows - yes. Ghosts, vibrating cacti, hotel delivering a bathtub full of ice, ect. - no.

I got them all right, too. A couple I'd heard before, a couple I just didn't believe, the rest were lucky guesses.

I am a skeptic by nature. So you have to convince me the story IS true, rather than prove it's not true. I doubt pretty much everthing until I've seen evidence.
