Grocery Coupons

Anybody watched that show where people devote their lives to using store coupons? Personally, I think it's nuts. They show off their storage rooms and there are shelves and shelves filled with deodorants, sugar laden cereals, razor blades, toothpaste, etc.

I've kept a minimum one year food storage program since 1982-83. The things they buy and in those quantities don't make sense to me. Is it just me?

My DH lost his job in the S&L crisis of the late 1980s. It was just over thirteen months until we got our next paycheck. And, thank goodness, those were the good 'ole days and when he did get another job it came with a signing bonus and relocation package. But we had to move from Denver to New Hampshire, a tough move.

We started living exclusively on our storage program as soon as he lost his job and we could have made it another 3-4 months before things got interesting. But you can't live on deodorant and razor blades?

I use software to aid in determining what we need and how much. It's based on number of people, calories required, and nutritional value of individual foods. Then, we stock basic commodities like socks, jeans, sneakers, and yes...toothpaste but not 367 tubes.

I seldom use coupons. They are rarely available for items we buy. Sometimes, I'll get lucky and get a coupon for olive oil or chocolate chips but it's really a small, small savings compared to our annual food budget. So much of what those people purchase with their coupons seems useless, to me, in a situation when it was really needed.

I understand it can be donated and a tax deduction taken but they seem so proud of all that deodorant? What gives? Anybody else watched that show?
