I need an American Idol refresher course, please.

I watched American Idol all the way through only once, some years ago. (Kelly Pickler was a contestant . . . I forget who won.) I've been watching the current auditions, and I can't remember what happens next.

I assume all the people they picked will get to sing again. But they picked quite a large number of them (I didn't count), and that has to be reduced to . . . what, 12? . . . before the competition starts in earnest. How do they get from here to there?

They eventually keep narrowing down until they reach the 12 last people and then start the huge show with just those 12. Each week they have a guest mentor for the finalists and a they have to perform whatever category is chosen that week in the song choices. You watch them grow in techniques and abilities until the last one is standing. The public makes the decision on who wins.

Thanks, Yayagal. So they eliminate a certain number at each show until they get to 12?

Incredible show last night. I think it was the best show so far. I was thoroughly entertained. For the first time, Sanjaya wasn't bad. His performance was much better than anything he's done before. The person who really bothers me and I think could very well be booted off tonight is Phil Stacey. He was the first one to perform. I just don't like him. Something about that guy really bothers me? And I think that out of all the performances last night, his was the weakest. Until Sanjaya's performance last night, I thought he should be the one to go. Guess we'll find out tonight. I agree that LaKisha should have listened to Lulu. I wasn't as impressed by her last night as I usually am. I'm adding Jordin to my favs too. And I rather like Haley, the girl with the mole and thought she was pretty good last night, though not the best. But I don't think she can win this. Melinda is just awesome as far as I'm concerned. I think she'll do well wheather she wins this or not. I look forward to her performances every week. Joy

Brooke changed my mind about her tonight. Hope she redeems herself next week, but don't doubt she is one to go home. She just doesn't have enough umph! and she didn't do well tonight. I still think she has a lot of potential for that Carly Simon genre, but we aren't the major voters. Well, we didn't have to like her kind of music, but I did enjoy that she was true to herself. Tonight, however, Amanda showed us she cannot sing a lick. Finally a song she didn't have to yell and grind every word, and we see there is no singing voice in there at all. I keep saying Carly is the best of all the girls, but it's so funny to me how she does not have an edge over them. They are more personality, or more dynamics, or more appealing when they sing. Can't put my finger on it except to say she doesn't shine like some of the others who don't sing as well. Asia'h was stunning tonight........then screwed up her song. I think she needs that adenoid (sp?) surgery. She's so extremely nasal and so is Alexandrea, but she really rocked "Baby, Please Don't Go." Ramiele is my little sweetheart. She's gonna win.

I love Adam and Kris - You should look up Adam on Youtube. He has some amazing performances on there and a couple "interesting" ones. Paula Abdul has been dealing with nerve damage in her neck after years of dancing. She is in constant pain in her neck and down her arm. I agree she isn't much of a critic or judge, but hearing everyone (not just here) write her off as a "pill popper" is really unfair. It does seem pretty obvious she is on some strong pain meds every now and then. I have arthritis in my neck that is impinging on nerves and have pain and numbness down my arm. It isn't nearly as bad as what she has been dealing with, but it is NOT fun. I think of what she is going through every time I watch "Dancing with the Stars" and see the girls whip their heads around like they do. Wonder it the future will be the same for them.

I forgot all about it.... I'm so sorry about James...but I think he'll have many oportunities ahead of him. Just hope he makes the right decisions. My choice would have been to send Scotty home first. I can't stand how cool he thinks he is. Then Haley. Then Lauren and James would have been the winner. Not sure if Lauren is mature enough for all of this. But I remember them saying early on they were hoping for a female winner this time. And looking for a new teen singer. She'll be a good infleunce on the teen fans. I hope...as long as she doesn't become "evil" patti

What happens next...they go to Hollywood. In the past they split everyone into groups to perform a song. They had 24hrs to learn the song.....but...some went out partying ALL night, some came together. The judges then picked the top male and females. In the past, 12 men, 12 women were chosen. The top 6 of each gender go on tour.

The public will choose five girls and five boys for the live shows in the finals. The judges will then choose contestants from the Wild Card round to advance to the finals.

According to the blog in the link.. there will only be one mentor for the season. Also not sure I read it here, but supposedly there doesn't have to be an equal number of girls and boys in the final 12. There will be general themes this year for songs (not certain artists).

Did anyone watch last night? Carmina Salcido was on and I am wondering how she did. I don't get the channel that it is currently on. Carmina was just 3 years old when her father went on a rampage killing 6 or 7 people near the city where I lived in CA. He slit the throats of Carmina and her 2 sisters and threw them into a dump. Carmina was the only survivor.

Linda, she apparently didn't make the cut. I didn't see or notice her audition (I'm glad American Idol didn't make a feature out of her terrible history), but I found this news item. I couldn't read it all the way through. The poor girl......
