I can see NBC! And the Olympics!!

I haven't been able to get NBC on my TV since the changeover to digital. I missed being able to watch Jeopardy, but since I work evenings and wouldn't be able to see it most of the time anyway, I wasn't too distressed by this. But I wanted to see some of the Olympics, so I emailed the Chief Engineer of our NBC affiliate and asked for his advice.

He sent back a lengthy email, of which I understood almost nothing. It was all highly technical, so I forwarded it to my son, who responded: "They moved their operating frequency from Channel 28 to 11, or down about 350MHz, which tripled the wavelength of the signal being transmitted."

The part I understand was ".....from Channel 28 to 11." I tried switching to Channel 11, and was happy to see NBC come in perfectly clear. Amazing!

Now I can watch some of the Olympics. Too bad our star downhill skier, Lindsey Vonn, got injured. I'm sure a lot of people, including me, were looking forward to seeing her compete. She must be profoundly disappointed. (Of course, it ain't over till it's over........)

I'm glad you get to see it so now let's pray they get some snow up there! It bothers me to think what it must be costing them to truck snow down from the mountains.

About Lindsey Vonn... did you hear that she won't be competing? I know she has an injury but haven't heard anything definite.

Figure skating is what I always look forward to as well!

Moonie, this MSNBC article was what I read. She may pull it off anyway, but it doesn't sound promising, at least to me.

Flooded??? You mean it can get worse?? Lately anytime I open a post, I get a video pop up. Maybe she's ready to retire. Most females on TV have a 'sell by' date.

Before anyone gets too wrapped up with patriotism as a factor for Olympic competitors, remember that most are pros and earn their livings from their activities. Aside from the sports/events that have people who are big money earners before they get off the planes in Rio - like the tennis, golf and basketball types - the rest can skyrocket their earnings from sponsors and endorsements by doing well in the Olympics and becoming better known. THAT'S the big motivator. Also as far as patriotism is concerned, there's a lot of nationality switching that goes one with Olympic competitors. As just one example, there are a lot of "American" women soccer players, for example, on the Mexico National Team (which was at the World Cup but not at these Olympics) as well as non-native born but now US citizens on the US team. Most change their affiliations for commercial, competitive and training reasons.

Funny, Gooster, because my DH was asking why the players were wearing those suits the other night. I had to explain it to him that they were actually playing on a beach, it was windy, and it was cool because it was winter in Rio. Just loved watching Michael Phelps get his 4th medal in the IM last night. And of course the 'other' Simone who tied for the gold in swimming. Had to cry right along with her. And of course with Ali Raisman and Simone Biles after their floor exercises. I'm gonna pay today for staying up for that.

i'm boycotting sorry...still very very bitter about chicago not getting 2016 and Vancouver getting tons of cash inflow from the IOC. this is the first time a host city could not come up w/ all of the $$ and the first time the IOC is giving $$ so that the games go off as scheduled. after chicago lost their bid i really started looking into how the whole IOC process operates and to say that it is archaic is an understatement. as far as i'm concerned the games could stop permanently. and if the USOC doesn't soon buckle under the IOC's thumb they just may stop for the US. ~ liz

Susan- that's great. I didn't realize the extent of her injury until I read the MSNBC article. I sure hope she can ski. My son had a deep muscle bruise and they can cause really long lasting issues. During a lacrosse game a player hit him on the thigh full force with the butt of his lacrosse stick. We had to rush him to the hospital that night when his thigh swelled up to twice it's size and turned wonderful shades of purple, blue, red. It was disgusting. They couldn't drain the fluid and blood because it was interspersed throughout the tissue of his quad. He was out for the rest of the season and for months he'd develop huge bruises. The scariest part was the orthopedic surgeon was concerned that he'd develop calcification in the muscle which could permanently limit his movement.

I feel so sorry for her. After her injury in the last Olympics I'm sure she must be really devastated.

Now that NBC is back you can even record Law and Order too.
