allergies and feeling exhausted

Hi List, I have been feeling exhausted...went to the doctor who says that the problem is allergies. I feel more like I have the flu...has anyone else experienced this? I took a sample of Claritin, but it made me more tired.

I am having that type of exhaustion right now...like the flu is coming on or a bad virus, and it is also from allergies. It is really overwhelming, and funny thing is, my "allergy" symptoms; nose, eyes, etc. are really, really mild. However, this whole scenario seems to worsen with my age (47 next week).

I don't know anyone that can handle Claritin and not feel more exhausted, just in a different way. My closest thing to a solution has been to take a child's dose of Benadryl syrup. It seems to be enough to ward off the worst of it but not make me drowsy as Benadryl can. Occasionally, some hot tea or coffee will get me through any drowsiness I do feel from it. My daughter and Sis use this "self-medication" technique also with pretty good success. We use the syrup because it's easier to take a child's dose then if you buy capsules. Good Luck...I DO know how you feel!!

There are so many different antihistamines it is worth the effort to experiment until you find one that works for you. That is, does away with your allergy symptoms but does not make you sick in some other way (better known as side effects). To Bosco I would say, let your doctor know about your response to the Claritin and ask for samples of some other prescription antihistamines to try. Tippsmom aslo had a good suggestion that is worth a try.

My allergies have become much less involved and less intense as I've gotten into my 50's but I remember clearly that fluish, exhausted feeling that was part of my summer and fall allergies, could barely drag myself through the days in Aug and Sept. and was ecstatic at the prediction of the first heavy frost of the season.

Bev, I feel for you. My worst allergies are in Jan. and Feb. due to cedar. A few years ago, I had sinus tumors (due to allergies) and surgery (after 4 years of it), and I feel a whole lot better now. Didn't even know I had allergies before that because no allergens could get in. I was just exhausted all the time. Never knew I was hardly breathing, as it happened gradually. I'd be willing bet the neti pot helps. After the surgery I had to use Afrin, then follow with a saline rinse (the applicator was just like afrin), then a nasal steroid. Had to do this for several months until I was healed. But, I can see how using a neti pot as a precautionary measure could do some good (if you're brave enough). Zyrtec D, is what I take and for me it works better than Allegra. My mom likes Allegra over Zyrtec. I occasionally use a store bought saline, just to get some relief. Have you tried that yet? And don't you think it is strange that humidity makes it worse? Here it's usually rain that gets me going. The humidity doesn't seem to be having a big effect on me. You'd think rain/humidity would stick all the pollen or whatever down. I'm not allergic to mold, according to my allergist, so that can't be it. Hope you feel better soon! Oh, and I eat local honey and all that bit. Don't know if it helps but it tastes good!

Happy 2012 Everyone! Yea! The 14 foot Non electric hose is fantastic! You can get everywhere with it. Boy let me tell you, I got my Rainbow out yesterday and put the dusting brush on the 14 foot hose & got EVERYWHERE floor to ceiling & I was exhausted when done. I seriously do recommend a Rainbow but let me tell you it's NOT a lazy persons machine! I will say this after owning it for five years. If you get it out, clean EVERYTHING. Cushion, floors, behind tv cords, ceiling fans, under beds. Once you get all this dust out. It really does take quite a while for it to come back, so you don't really have to do a thorough cleaning as often. I've been using mine a lot more here lately. It's funny how when you get it out & use it more, the learning curve is gone & it doesn't seem to be as much of a pain as it once was. I still can't believe the hepa on mine is STILL clean over five yrs later. I even took it OFF the machine to test the airflow to "make sure" it wasn't really clogged up or anything and I noticed NO noticeable increases in airflow with the hepa off or ON.......That to me is pretty darn amazing. An over five year old hepa still working at peak performance. But I've always changed water frequently & cleaned the grooves of the separator religiously. Perhaps that's why. I sometimes think other Rainbow owners may get tired of using it & not do this. You do sort of have to take a little extra effort to maintain it. But I think they will last decades if you do.

We must have been posting at the same time...... Sable - he does wheeze during his coughing attack. Luckily my FIL is a doc & he has come by daily to check his lungs. That is great about your son taking care of his own meds.....shoot, I'm just trying to get this boy to remember to brush his teeth daily when he wakes up!! Golddust - he has a major sinus infection now. They did a CT scan & showed the cavities or rather not showing the maxillary cavity b/c it is so congested. Segbrown - I am glad Flonase is working for you. My DH uses that also. We are using inhalers that have the fine powder that comes out - he was having a difficult time knowing when to inhale & push the inhaler. I find myself wanting to twist & cock the inhaler for him but he has to be able to do it himself & he does. Total fluke about getting tested for allergies.....I had an appointment b/c of a rash on my arm. Asthma doc & FIL worked together many years ago so FIL tells me to take my DS with me to my appointment just to make sure he was not missing anything. So, I call to ask if I can bring my son & Dr. says yes. Well, after they did that testing on his back - my rash was never mentioned!! I am so grateful that we took him and had him tested b/c this explains so much. I am totally rambling but I really appreciate the support. Smiles:)

Interesting thread- how did I miss this a year ago? My mother and I were talking a few months back about the materials used in new housing construction- after she went to visit my brother in his huge, new house that is all cheapo materials. She complained that everything from doors to counters was plastic. I've been very interested in some of the stuff that's out there lately about various components of plastic being hazardous to the immune system. I got rid of my chronic hayfever about 10 years ago by putting myself on a regimen of vitamins and supplements for a couple of months- said goodbye to a lifetime of hayfever so am convinced that the immune system may play a bigger role than it's given credit for. Who knows how or if all those plastics play into that type of thing. Some of it can also be the landscaping done in new construction areas. Back in the good old days, whatever grew was what grew (think of the farm), now so much of what is planted is well cultivated and is often a male tree that looks prettier than a female tree, or may be less messy, but spends a great deal of time spurting pollen hither and yon. Humidifying is great not just for the linings of the nasal passaged, but also because dust mites don't do well with higher humidity. Rinsing the sinuses with salt water like someone else suggested is also a great thing to learn- I learned to do it with a shot glass and have cleared sinus infections very rapidly that way.

The only thing that has worked for me is Advil cold and sinus. I don't get tired and it takes away any of the body aches that I have. I always dread this time of the year, and I agree with Anne on the heavy frost.

what allergy medicines work the best, I use Allegra but it doesn't seem to work....I have terrible allergies and I take 3 shots a week but that doesn't work either
