Itchy skin!!!

I am 49 and have not had a period now for 2 months! This has never happened before but i have been a mess up to this point so i knew it was coming. If the reflux, anxiety and insomnia aren't enough my skin is now driving me nuts. It happens mostly at night and I will suddenly itch and itch all over the place. My back, legs, chest, stomach and i end up with what looks like hives. What is this and is it a normal part of the change that is taking place?

I don't know if it's normal, but I'm experiencing this as well. For me, I was assuming it was due to an increase in processed carbs. I was afraid that I have Candida, so I just started to drastically cut carbs (just yesterday). Hoping to find relief soon! Best of luck to you!

No hot showers and use skin cream. It might be dry skin.

I would go to a place like Sephora and explain your situation. Sephora is not a store that only carries one brand, they will give you a total makeover with different products and if they are itchy you can eliminate them from your list. They have found the right combo for me, and I suffer from excema with the use of scented products.

I switched to CLEAR CARE because it is preservative free and have had no reaction to it so far. Very happy about that because most lens solutions do contain preservatives. Unfortunately, the problem reoccured about a week after I first posted my message. I had made an assumption that saline solution is just purified salted water and you can use whichever brand you like. You'd think by now I'd have enough brains to read the ingredients on anything I put in my eyes but I didn't. Lo and Behold the generic (Target) brand of Saline caused another allergic reaction and I was back on the hydrocortisone. In bold letters at the top of the bottle (on the back) it states "No Sorbic Acid and no Thimerosal". Not till you read the contents does it say "preserved with ...". So they're putting preservatives in Saline too! The only saline I found that does not contain preservatives is Unisol 4 by Alcon. Expensive, hard to find, and they only seen to come in 4 oz bottles (maybe because there is no preservative in them). My husband wears contacts too and he's never had a problem with products w/ preservatives. However, after seeing what it did to me he doesn't want them in his eyes anymore either. If you are like me (prone to allergies, excema, sensitive skin, etc) be very careful what you buy to clean your lenses. Hard to believe that such a small amount of liquid left on your lenses could do so much damage but it can. The chemicals will be absorbed into the skin around your eyes.

Hi ponderinstuff, I don't have reddened skin, but I sure have problems with dry skin. I had it on HRT, and it's getting much worse as I am weaning off my patch. The inside of my nose is getting incredibly dry too. Also, areas on my thighs above my knees are getting bad too.......so to answer your question.....I'm not sure what your reddened face really means, but I think that if your dry, itchy skin is due to low estrogen, that HRT will help it. I'm afraid that might be over-kill, so to speak, though. Perhaps there is another way to try to moisturize your skin? Maybe one of the vitamins, in particular? Good luck. I feel like I may turn into a prune at any moment! ;)

MSN news had a slide show this morning of what might trigger psoriasis: blood-pressure medications !! It's the binder/filler ingredients in pills, such as magnesium stearate which is the culprit. With my 3-years hand rash I finally found the culprit besides my hard-well water: It's magnesium stearate coating on pills, also a component in Nature-Made magnesium pills, and a component in Nature-Made vitamin D tablets. An amazon customer reported that magnesium stearate in Align probiotic pill caused bad rash, so I stopped my magnesium pills ... and no more rash !! I'm taking magnesium oxide powder, which doesn't have the magnesium stearate coating .. so far zero problems, zero rash with magnesium oxide. That's why a few Amazon customers complained about magnesium stearate as the coating/binder ingredient in pills. I'm 44, about 5 years ago I woke up one morning with a systemic itch - the kind that can make you insane. It was a burning, tingling itch from inside - from scalp, armpits, palms, bottom feet and center of chest. At first I thought it was an allergy or poison oak as I was gardening the day before - after a round of prednisone that didn't knock it out (never mind benadryl) I saw an allergist who chalked it up to a weird auto-immune thing. He had me on 1/2 zantac and 1/2 zyrtec 2 times a day - this was the entire summer, eventually it subsided but if I really overdo it and sweat a ton ( heavy work out, gardeningin extreme heat) I'll get a flare up but it'll pass in a few minutes. All I can say is this whole perimenopause thing has been one mysterious discovery afer another, and nothing other than the hotflashes and emotions has been "text book". Not sure if you have acide reflux or allergies ( I did, which is why I thnk the combo the allergist prescribed work for me) but you may want to talk to an allergist about it if you are not getting relief from lotion/moisturizing - also try magnesium oil.

Actually I do have reflux/GERD and I thought my gallbladder was going because i had read that itching can be a sign of a bad gallbladder!! The itching comes and goes..pretty sure it is peri!! what a mess. Lubriderm for itching is working to help ease it though.

I started with the crazy itching a year after I had my gall bladder removed, so it was not that for me. When I was getting my MRI the tech had the same eact itching thing and she too was talking 1/2 zantac and 1/2 zyrtec for the itching - she had been on that for 10 years, she said every time she tried to stop the itching would comeback with a vengeance. I think its hormonal, but good luck trying to get a doctor to confirm that. If lubriderm works than stock with it, lotion didn't even touch it for me.

I think it's hormonal too since i haven't had a period in almost 3 months and this is when it all began. The lubriderm does help but it doesn't stop it altogether. It is so aggravating, you itch one part of your body and then it itches somewhere else. Sometimes i look like i was in a fight with a cat after all the scratching. Yea, no one told me about this crap. Hot flashes i knew about but some of the other stuff.. not so much.
